Cyndi Lauper, Cher, Donna Summer, Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, and Madonna don't qualify as "rock" stars in my book. Unless any of them had a SOTM or EO17 or even a Rosebud Rhiannon moment when I wasn't looking.

(Also Pat Benatar makes me want to smash things with big sticks, but she's more of a rock star than most of the others and belongs on the list anyway.)

ryan8472 12-28-2006 09:38 PM

The notion that any of those women are more rock & roll than Chrissie Hynde and Joan Jett makes me sick. :distress:

Cyndi has/had a lot of those! :p She's a madwoman onstage. Don't be ignorant.

Pat Benetar is kinda... eh. Not my cup of tea.

Is there anyone in the world over the age of, oh, 16, who can listen to Love Is a Battlefield with a straight face?

yes.

i agree with you about cyndi, though, and i LOVE cyndi. love her. she just doesn't belong on a r&r list.

jannieC 12-28-2006 10:15 PM

Seems as though the list could have spared Gloria and The Bangles. It always amazes me how these lists include artists that have nothing to do with the genre...The Go-Go's, Mariah, Janet, etc. Eh, what do I know.

Pat Benatar had some great music back in the day- Promises in the Dark, Hell is for Children, Heartbreaker, Shadows of the Night- all great songs.

HejiraNYC 12-28-2006 10:20 PM

I could possibly see how the regular VH1 channel would neglect to mention Stevie (since she hasn't released any new solo music in almost six years), but VH1 Classic??? No Stevie? No Joni? No Siouxsie? No Patti Smith? ... but Mariah, Gloria and Madonna? Totally f***ing crazy.

i agree - i think about a third of that list shouldn't be on there. whoever created the list seriously blurred the lines of "rock" and "pop" ... they are different things!

agreed about PB too. bitch knows how to work it.

ontheEdgeof17 12-28-2006 10:23 PM

We must remember that music stations use the term "rock and roll" loosely. When they say "rock and roll", they mean music in general.

With that said, this list still sucks.

GLORIA ESTEFAN?!!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Even as a fellow CUBAN, Gloria Estefan induces vomiting, headaches, and the uncontrolable urge to drive your car into a canal (Or to Conga off of a cliff)...the choice is yours...

Plus, she is no where NEAR rock and roll....

What about the Congo Walk? I was wanting to rush the stage at her show.

Congratulations, you and 2 other people were probably the only ones! I've had to take my grandmother to the past 2 Gloria Estefan shows.... (One for charity a couple of months ago and then back in '04). I NEVER thought I would have found an artist who has a smaller range then Stevie, until I saw Gloria Estefan...Stevie might cling to 3 notes, but Gloria struggles to get to 2!

Johnny Stew 12-28-2006 11:22 PM

Funny thing... the other day I said something about Stevie being dubbed the "Queen of Rock" by Rolling Stone in 1981, and my uncle and brother both said, "Stevie Nicks has NEVER been true 'rock & roll'!"
So I think the "rock" tag has different meanings to different people.

At any rate, it surprises me to see a few of those ladies on the list at the expense of Stevie... but then Stevie is also in very good company with a lot of the equally deserving women they left off.

Having said that, she was placed at #14 on VH1's "100 Greatest Women of Rock & Roll" list several years back, and I consider that list to be far more definitive than this one.

Johnny Stew 12-28-2006 11:23 PM

Oh yeah, and I happen to like Pat Benatar. :p

Uh, yes. :D This stupid 20 list is filled with disco and dance divas that are not rock and roll. Pat Benatar is a classic woman rock and roller whether you like her or not.

danax6 12-29-2006 09:39 AM

I want to join the I-like-Pat-Benetar-but-this-list-sucks group, can I? :D

She was 14?! Wow! I knew she was on the list but I didn't think she was so high up! That's brilliant!

.....Then why on earth is she not here? That makes no sense at all...

PS: Sheryl doesn't deserve to be there, I don't think... :sorry:

I wholeheartedly agree.......

skcin 12-29-2006 10:56 AM

It was the 20 Greatest Women in Music, btw. Not rock.

Although I'm still pretty surprised Stevie or Janis didn't make it. or Grace Slick. Or Bonnie Raitt. Or Joni Mitchell. I won't even get started on classic artists like Etta James....

Have you ever heard of Big Mama Thornton? She was a major influence on Janis, and her music is awesome. Her record of Ball and Chain is something to behold.

So yeah, the narrowminded gen x'er that made this list needs to brush up on his music.

Yeah, if cracked out gorgeous screechers are going to be that high on the list, Stevie should be number one.

WTF is with the Benatar bashers? That woman's voice can shatter ceramic, and I love her. Her voice is like a tidal wave, spinning over my head!!! She's definitely the right kind of sinner to release my inner fantasies.
It is odd to me that someone can think "women in music" and not think of Stevie, especially as everybody likes Stevie Nicks.

For real. I think she's one who does belong on the list. But I do agree that when I watch the "Invincible" video, not so much the song, it's hard to hold back a laugh or two.

So can Yoko Ono.

Karlie 12-29-2006 06:18 PM

This list is seriously messed up. They should get rid of Gloria, Cher, Janet, Mariah, and Whitney. Replace with Stevie, Janis, Bonnie Raitt, Linda Ronstadt, and Grace Slick.
