Christmas albums
I see where my girl Sarah McLachlan has a new Christmas cd out this year.... and making all the tv stops. YAY!!! :wavey:
I also notice James Taylor has one out... but hear it was actually one of those Hallmark releases last year(?). Love me some JT, just the same. Anyone have any other Christmas cds to recommend? Other than Christine on "Women Of Christmas In The Garden Of Lilith" and the Billy song Miss Vicky just posted.... did any other member of Fleetwood Mac release anything "Christmas-y"? |
^^
Well there's always Stevie's version of Silent Night, which I adore. The only whole Christmas album I own is an Amy Grant one, but I was very curious about Sarah's... |
Sarah's CD is depressing. It's so droned and boring. Blah.
I prefer the 80s versions of Christmas songs. They are more upbeat and fun. My favorite is Santa Claus Is Coming To Town by the Pointer Sisters. |
As far as I know, the only other Mac member to do a Christmas tune is Stevie (as Deanna already mentioned), though I'm not personally fond of her vocals on "Silent Night" (BTW, that was on the first A Very Special Christmas, I think)
I'm really, really not a fan of Christmas music in general. The only Christmas cds I own are: Kev's Kristmas Album - Kevin "Bloody" Wilson (the obscene album I mentioned before) Malibooz Yule - A Malibu Kind of Christmas - The Malibooz (Walter Egan's surf band) The Christmas Album - A Gift of Love - Various Artists (bought solely for the Billy song I posted earlier) |
I like the Trans Siberian Orchestra for entire albums. They're kind of a rock opera trilogy:
Christmas Eve and Other Stories The Christmas Attic The Lost Christmas Eve Handel's Messiah is another one of my favs. There's various versions of this one though. |
Hands-down, A Christmas Gift To You From Phil Spector is the greatest Christmas record ever, if not one of the greatest records of all time. All the great girl-group singers, like Ronnie Spector and Darlene Love, doing amazing renditions of the classics. Definitely my favorite.
I like the very first "A Very Special Christmas" record. The one with the red cover. Really, most of those are great. I also love all the punk/rock n roll Christmas compilations. Also, the Carpenters one is good, as are the Elvis ones. Apparently, 2 Live Crew has a Christmas record. I need a copy. |
A few I recommend...
"A Charlie Brown Christmas"-Vince Guaraldi Trio
"Merry Axemas-A Guitar Christmas" (Featuring Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Eric Johnson, Jeff Beck, Brian Setzer Orch., Joe Satriani, Steve Morse, Steve Vai, Joe Perry of Aerosmith, Alex Lifeson of Rush, Richie Sambora of Bon Jovi & Hotei) "Merry Axemas Vol.2-More Guitars for Christmas" (Featuring Steve Lukather of Toto, Neal Schon of Journey, Steve Stevens of Billy Idol, Stu Hamm, Trevor Rabin, Zakk Wylde, John Sykes, Robin Trower, Al Di Meola & Ted Nugent) |
the only christmas album i own is barbra's original christmas album. gotta love that epileptic version of "jingle bells"!
her live version of silent night from a happening in central park is killer. |
I hate Christmas music so much. In fact, the only songs I like are Band Aid, and "Silent Night" by Stevie. And Im not even being biased by liking that Stevie Christmas track - it was my favourite Christmas song before I even knew who Stevie was...

Yes there is indeed...

I'm surprised no one has mentioned any ABBA Christmas tunes?! If any exists... no doubt a Ledgie knows about it. ;) |

I don't really have one to recommend, but did anyone else here see that apparently Billy Idol has a Christmas album out? WTF?

Believe it or not, the only actual Christmas album I own is Celine Dion's These Are the Special Times. I have a collection of mixed Christmas albums and a lot of songs on my computer though.

Only Xmas album I have is the one by Ella Fitzgerald. I don't like the religious songs, and hers is all-secular (Jingle Bells, Sleigh Ride, etc). I was amused that Bette Midler has a Xmas album. Isn't she Jewish? Although, I guess it's not as weird as Tina Turner doing one would be.

I was just thinking that! You know, I didn't think you could get a more depressing version of "Christmas Time is Here" than the one from A Charlie Brown Christmas, but she proved me wrong. I do like the song "River" but I don't think of it as a Christmas song at all. A favorite of mine since I was little has been "The Ventures Christmas Album". I don't really enjoy a complete Christmas record from anyone, so I usually make a new compiliation every year. |

my fav Xmas albums:
Christmas Memories - Barbra Streisand Merry Christmas - Mariah Carey My Kind of Christmas - Christina Aguilera |

"Hey/Hi old man?" That's a funny song title. Does anyone know why Neil Diamond (Jewish) put out a Christmas album a few years back? I always thought that was quite hilarious. Has Babs done something like that? Edit: ^^^^ I guess she has. |

I'm another one that doesn't much go for the religious songs. I prefer something upbeat and spirited to keep me bouncing through the frenzy of the season.
I've got around a hundred XMas discs. I'll listen to nothing else from now through the end of the year. The ones that end up in the player the most are the Jethro Tull album and Ringo Starr's album. I also like the two Brian Setzer Orchestra XMas discs a lot. Of course the Phil Spector album is a classic and is the one that opens up the season for me. |
