Is Lindsey being more blunt lately?

Hi, guys. Long time no see. Good to be back. Uhm, had a question -

Apparently, Lindsey recently said the following, when asked about releasing Buckingham/Nicks on CD:

"I know, isn't it ridiculous? Stevie and I own the 24-track masters, and one of Stevie's managers has them at her house. I actually didn't know where they were for a while; that's one of those little power plays that goes on. It's become almost an extension of Fleetwood Mac politics, convoluted as they are."

Does it seem to anyone else that Lindsey is being very blunt lately about what goes on behind the scenes in Fleetwood Mac; and that he's maybe feeling a little aggravated with Stevie at the moment?

I love it. At least he says something about something, and I don't think he's being really insulting. I mean, he's being a little snarky about "politics" and "what so and so wants", but he's always been like that. I'm sure every member brings their own set of politics - and all the others could be saying almost the same as Lindsey. Except John, of course. To me, he's just expressing both the same things that have frustrated him all along, and also the slowness and beaurocracy involved in the process, which I'm sure everyone can be frustrated with. Unfortunately, that's how show biz (stupid phrase) contracts can work - especially with a band. It's naive to think they could all just decide things nicely among themselves and satisfy everyone's desires and interests. Gaw, especially with a band with so many different song writing credits, solo careers, and T.V./Magazine/Whatever engagements. I have my own opinions about who is being a little whiny about what at different times, but I don't think Lindsey is saying something new, or saying something others in the band haven't also expressed at some time. He is saying those things from his perspective, of course, as everyone does.
I appreciate his plain language, and I don't think it's particularly inflammatory. And definitely not comparatively inflammatory, if you know what I mean.

It's nice when someone explains why we're not hearing the work. As if we didn't know.
And I'm not trying to Diss those members of the band that are more circumspect. I appreciate all the aspects. Some a bit more than others, but the whole reason I like this band musically is that there is so much variety - and likewise I like the variety of perspectives on everything that is going on. If you think about it, it's even more valuable because when you, the reader/listener, have more perspectives, you can take all the evidence and decide for yourself what is really going on, what really happened, the real dynamic.
Am I wrong?
I just blend them all together to get a more comprehensive picture, and therefore something closer to the truth.
Seriously, if you take one situation, and consider what each band member said about it, and each band members natural inclinations and personality, based on what you know they have said in the past, then (if you are a bit logical and emotionally aware), you can discern what the vibe probably was, and how the negotiation/giant argument/musically genius moment/whatever - probably went down. You can see, or see through, what everyone has said. Because you have more info.

Sometimes that is why people who say that people on boards shouldn't criticize the members bug. Everyone is human, everyone has their own perspective, and the more perspectives you, as an outside observer, know, the closer you are to the truth. Because, only having one perspective on anything is deadly. One perspective of someone else regarding emotional matters is rarely the truth. If ever. You must find as much information as you can, and then formulate your own perspective, based on all your knowledge. (I think they recently stopped spelling knowledge with a "d". So I see it spelled both ways now. It kind of pisses me off. I like it with a "d", cause I'm an old school speller. )

Then, of course, you are free to insist that your perspective is correct, because you have the most best information!
Sesly.

He is as free as anyone to speak his mind. I personally don't read anything into it one way or the other.

 I definitely know what you mean and I've been thinking the same thing. He seems to have a great deal of hostility toward Fleetwood Mac and especially Stevie at the moment. Well, I wouldn't say so much John or Mick, but just, as he says, the "politics" of it all. But Stevie, personally, yeah, I can definitely feel the frustration and what-not he seems to be venting here lately when it comes to her. Kind of excites me. At least there's SOMETHING going on between the two of them. Even if it is... you know... love/hate.

He's not been hostile at all. He talks with a lot of love about FM. He's just been relieved from WB's FM-pressure. That makes him speak a little more open about FM-politics, which he's a part of, but always havenot liked.
Hostility against Stevie? He even said that he would like to tour a BN-cd-release. Doesn't sound hostile to me. He said that to his knowledge Stevie wasn't very interested in putting out new music. Those were her own words and we know them too. The thing about touring with FM in the future he just pointed out -with some cynical undertone- what looks a bit double: focus on the soapopera again. I'm sure he'll play it again, but hey, the guy is touring a very personal album on which he shows happiness and maturity towards his lovelife and family. That tiny bit of sarcasm towards the FM-drama is easy to understand with little empathy.

Thank you, Gerald. :wavey:

I agree with you that I don't think Lindsey sounds all that hostile towards FM. Every time someone says something that is not considered 'worshipping' it's immediately labeled as 'hostile'. There are middles lines also, and I for one think it's refreshing Lindsey speaks candidly about some of the politics regarding FM and the music business in general. We've always suspected some things went down like this, and yet when it's confirmed we are surprised?

Lindsey does come off as being more blunt these days, which I admit is a little surprising, because though he hinted at things in the past, he never really specified like he does now. But really, I ain't complaining. Write a book, Linds!

LOL - LB is SUCH a whiner. I mean come on. He was on the road with La Nicks for like two years and worked with her on a record for like a year before that. He also recently said he just saw her, etc. During all that time, he could not have gotten those masters  I think he loves to play the victim

I find it quite unbelievable that you still portrait him as a whiner-as if no-one devellops. I really think you still look at him the way you want to look at him. You even top me in that. :D He hasn't WHINED a second here like he did in the past. Have you listened to the new york-torrent? and all those radio-interviews? I really think here stands a more grown human being. Who delivers art-even in the FMsongs on tour: if you look at the setlist you will say: same old same old (like you said in another thread), but if you LISTEN to it you here a fantastic light folkrock-approach to them.

No, the stevie addepts are the whiners these days.

shackin'up 11-10-2006 09:23 AM

It's quite possible Stevie's management kept them away from him for a few years. I bet if you had let him alone with them in certain era in his career he would fick them up totally. You don't know if he HAS asked. Which is very likely. You just don't know towards what incredible level their communication has become. In DR Stevie is defending her managementassistant towards LB in her own presence fgsake! No whining is what has been his second nature for a long time but I think at last there's a woman out there that does have some influence on that irritating habit. You can't change them totally though.:D

I agree. Lindsey has grown so much in the past ten years. He seems to be a completely different guy perspective wise than the guy who played on the stage at the Clinton inauguration. I think the marriage and the children have given him a perspective on life that has made him more mature and is serving him very well. I'm really happy for him.

skcin 11-10-2006 02:10 PM

Why shouldn't he say these things? Doesn't bother me one bit, I'm just glad he's addressing the BN album at all. He could just say "oh, maybe someday..." like usual. Maybe by opening his mouth he's hoping Stevie will get her ass in gear & work with him to figure out when they'll release it. Maybe he's trying to get the fans buzzing.

I wish someone would've told Ken Caillat that when he was looking for them a few years back.

Lindsey isn't being blunter than usual lately.

It's just that everything that's happened to him in the last 30 year is somebody else's fault.

You don't listen to him, otherwise you won't respond so blatantly dumb. The man is constantly telling in all interviews and ALL over his new record that there's only one to blame for his mistakes and that is himself. If you haven't picked that up yet, that says enough for me.:distress:

I agree. He sounds like someone who has, in some way, come to terms with all of the bull****, so now he feels more free to talk about it. Maybe it's therapy, maybe it's Kristen, or just the perspective marriage and children give you. And this doesn't strike me as mean so much as being like the way you compalin about obnoxious family members! Regardless, this indicates to me that Linds is, perhaps only finally, settling into his own skin.

I think there's another element, too. I think the bombing of OOTC, followed by the subsequent bombing of "Street Angel" and Fleetwood Mac either becoming an opening act or part of a package tour made him realize that they needed each other, or their collective careers were over. I think this is a big part of why he was able to put all of THAT behind him and find a way to work with Fleetwood Mac again, in a span of about two years.

As it happened, Fleetwood Mac was in relative chaos, with Christine making it clear she was out, Bekka and Billy making it clear that they were going to make a duet album once the contract was up, and it becoming very clear that it wasn't working with Dave Mason. Lindsey saw what was going on, and basically offered Mick a job being his drummer. So, Mick split up a band that was breaking up anyway to work with Lindsey. (Isn't it odd that they never toured behind the "Time" album?) The rest is history.

He obviously doesn't like all of the machinery that still surrounds Fleetwood Mac (I don't think any of them really do), but I think he has come to terms with it, and with the fact that he needs the band as much they need him. I think he could do without the "show" element of the band (i.e. the Stevie-Lindsey were once lovers thing), but also realizes that it's part of the game too.
