Get a hobby.

I had an interesting morning...

After class, I was waiting outside for a ride where I usually do, right across the street from the uni. There are about three houses on this little street, and normally what I do is walk down and lean against this huge rought iron fence until my mom shows.

So, I'm standing there, minding my own business, listening to my music. Out of the corner of my eye, I notice a woman coming out of the house. I think nothing of it, and completely ignore her. Next thing I know, I feel a little poke in my back. I take off my earphones, and she goes, "Uh, we've had problems with this fence?", like I should know what that means. I just looked at her, totally confused, so she says again, "PROBLEMS with this FENCE, thank you"

Got the hint, thanks. I just snapped, "Oh, really? All right then" and backed off of her stupid fence.

Let me get this straight: I can understand the fence is technically her property. But, I'm on the other side of her lawn, with little more than my ass against this precious piece of metal, which is a wee bit taller than I am - and I'm pretty short - and she feels like jabbing me in the back and telling me to move? I wasn't even doing anything. I wasn't sawing away at it, or climbing it, or throwing stuff into her yard. And I was by myself! Right, better watch the **** out.

Am I nuts, or is was this chick being an unnecessary bitch?

jannieC 09-22-2006 05:10 PM

I don't know if she was a bitch but I'd be upset if someone touched me. Even if you had your headphones on and couldn't hear her, she could have positioned herself in front of you to get your attention. Ok, she's a big ole bitch. :wavey:

DrummerDeanna 09-22-2006 05:14 PM

Weeeelll some people are weird about their property. And some people get nervous seeing young people "loitering" outside of their property. Maybe someone else had vandalized or hurt the fence? And she was taking it out on you.

There is no excuse for her poking you - and she could have been nicer about it - so yeah she has issues.

Yeah. Even though she couldn't call me by name, I would've settled for her screeching in my ear. You should've heard the attitude on her, though! Damn.

chiliD 09-22-2006 05:18 PM

You're probably lucky the "little poke" wasn't the barrel of a rifle or shotgun.

"I'm glad you have fence. It's a beautiful fence. I choked up when I saw this incredible fence. What a fantastic fence, ma'am. I hope you can spend the rest of you're life behind it to watch it. Good afternoon."

I figured she must have had some bad experience(s) in the past. But... I don't know, I wasn't doing anything even remotely suspicious or offensive! I could see if I were with a big group, being obnoxious, but this was on the very edge of her property and on the other side of the grass. I wasn't even looking at her damn house.

I don't know how long she's been there, but she lives directly across from a university and what looks like a private elementary school. There's bound to be a lot of people outside of/around your house, no matter what their intentions.

Even after I stood away from it, I noticed her looking out the window. WTF?

*smirk* Yeah, this is true. Considering where I was, I wouldn't have been surprised if she came at me with something like that!

 I need to take you with me on Tuesday.

My first impulse was to say something like, "Problems? With this fence? No, ma'am, I'm in engineering. I can safely say it'd take the weight of three thousand elephants and one ostrich to knock this baby down! Go back inside and enjoy your cofee, I'll keep watch"

That'll do the trick, too. You don't need me on tuesday, but If we met we could have ALOT of fun, but don't fence me in.

Man - if this lady lives across from a University AND an elementary school she's probably used to all kinds of vandalism, disrespect and problems. I live across the street from a high school, so sadly I can kind of relate to this woman.

Though YOU were not being a problem - it's hard to look at one young person just standing around without thinking problems may ensue - probably has paranoia due to past experience.

I mean her behavious must have a reason behind it - if not - then she's just an unpleasant bitch  Could go either way.

I live about.... ten seconds away from my old elementary school, which had a pretty bad reputation in terms of student behaviour (believe me, I know! The kids sucked), but I don't recall any problems in the neighbourhood with it. The only thing "we" got in trouble for was visiting the rival school down the road. LOL.

I guess she could've been paranoid, but I'll admit, I'm naturally the same way, so two defensive people coming together doesn't exactly make for a picnic.

Oh I hear ya - and I probably would have reacted the same way, only I would have said something snarky to her -then felt bad about it later. Ugh.

Gotta say, that after a couple of bad experiences with the evil high-schoolers across the street, I'm sorry I was not more sympathetic to your situation....:o

Haha. Nah, I just gave her my patented glare and let her think she won. I'm sure it made her day. There's always next week!

Um, I'm... watching a really cute Cyndi interview on youtube! Go search for the latest stuff and watch the 1992 int.

Oh, family reunions. Glad we don't have 'em....

It's cool. I was expecting a mixed reaction, anyway. I think I was relatively nice about it. I figure it's not my only chance to get my piece in if I need to. lol.

I may be one of those people who's "weird" about my property, but if you're leaning against a fence listening to music and lost to the world, you're most likely not going to be very interested in focusing on anything else going on. I know I'm like that when I listen to music.

But having said that, some people are very touchy about their property/territory and she could very well have seen you intruding on her property without a damn good reason. I know if you were on my fence, I probably would have reacted very similarly.

Of course, I probably would have reacted similarly if someone tried to get my attention whilst I was listening to music on my headphones and it's some random person whom I don't know from Adam.

paleshadow 09-24-2006 11:44 PM

Probably wouldn't have hurt to find out a little more. The fence may have been damaged recently and she might not want it to happen again. Wrought Iron fences can be very expensive to fix. Someone could have gotten hurt while leaning on the fence, and being that it is her property she could be held responsible for that.

irishgrl 09-25-2006 06:47 AM

under the circumstances, I could very easily envision her putting her place up for sale in the near future  I dont think she'll be able to live with the strain much longer :distress:

I'm glad you're kidding

I think she was well within her right to ask you to stop leaning against her fence, it is HER fence, right? BUT, I think she could have been a little less rude in asking you. Poking is just plain wrong. She could have lightly tapped you, she didn't because she pre-judged you as being a disrespectful young person with no regard for property or authority. She was wrong in that regard. Don't worry about it, let is slide off your back. Sounds like you didn't say anything back to her that you can't live with. Just take it as a lesson that some people are very sensitive about their property and move on.

Yeah, but I don't really see what I was doing as intrusion of any kind. If I were kicking it or trying to get over it, I'd see her point. I just think she was bitching for the sake of bitching, to be honest. If I were leaning against the outside of your fence and not even paying attention to your house, you'd have done the same?

She didn't seem in the mood for conversation, believe me, or I would've inquired further. I imagine they'd be expensive to repair, but I hardly think putting a teensy bit of weight on something bigger than me is going to cause it to tumble to the ground. Looked and felt pretty sturdy to me.

It was mostly the way she approached me that pissed me off. I would've had no problem with it if she'd been a little more tactful. Eh, I'm over it. It just wasn't a good day to have that happen.
