Hair

Maybe I don't get it, but I just dont understand some people's obsession with perfect hair. I tease my aunt all the time when she comes over calling her helmet head because when I touch her hair it's hard as a rock. Anyway, I know I'm kind of an anomaly among people of my persuasion, but I cant stand the thought of ever putting gel in my hair. Some people I can understand if they're in business because they want to look more "Professional." Oh well, like I said, maybe I just dont get it!

Johnny Stew 09-18-2006 04:40 PM

I couldn't even run my fingers through the hair of my second boyfriend because it was moussed and sprayed like nobody's business. I didn't like that.

I've used gel a few times over the years, and tried mousse in the '80s (hey, everyone else was doing it!), but I really don't like to be bothered. I wash my hair and comb it, and that's good enough for me.

So I'm with you, David... I don't get it either. But to each their own.

I put more stock in my eyebrows than I do my hair. I would seriously pay more for a good eyebrow wax than a haircut any day. Seriously.

sorry..getting ready for Grey's Anatomy!!:blob2:

DrummerDeanna 09-18-2006 06:13 PM

Well if you had MY hair trust me, you'd use product!

I'd have a gross looking afro without product. I'm growing it out- but I defintely care how my hair looks!

michelle2677 09-18-2006 06:19 PM

oh, I use product, don't get me wrong.

start off with a leave in conditioner, then go to the paul mitchell seal and shine. sometimes just a little volumizer at the roots. start drying with a diffuser (I have curly hair...well....somewhat) and then right before it's dry, a soft curl enhancer balm-something or other. but it never looks good, so I just do my routine and move on with it. it sounds like a lot, but it goes real quick. but my eyebrows.....that's another story!

DrummerDeanna 09-18-2006 07:17 PM

I'm actually growing my hair out because I'm so sick of the products actually.

Now that said, I'll still use many products - they just won't render my hair un-run-your-fingers-throughable" My hair is hard because of the goo I use - it looks great but I'm sick of the goo. Of course a couple of months into having longer hair I'll be sick of blowdrying and straightening it. Sigh. I've got a TON of thick thick hair and it's neither straight nor curly - it's just unruly and weird.

michelle2677 09-18-2006 07:18 PM

mine is really curly

in places. so it's straight in others so it just looks like I haven't brushed it.

Sometimes I havent. :o

estranged4life 09-18-2006 07:29 PM

I don't understand...

why some women seem fascinated with running their hands through my hair, frikkin' annoying man. I dont even like Deb to do that ****. Women must still like guys with long hair even though the trend is for short hair on men  Btw, I havent cut it in over 3+ years.

I also dont understand why people buy 20 bazillion hair products, I only use shampoo (Usually Pantene) and a brush, Don't see no need to put tire lube, Bozo-the-Clown hair coloring and Exxon-Valdez recovered oil-spilt oil in my hair or dry it with a wind tunnel machine, How about using room temp air to dry it?

DrummerDeanna 09-18-2006 07:57 PM

^^

Well all of the guys I've ever known with long hair have the most soft and lovely hair. You boys - you get the good hair, the good eyelashes

Heh - my ex boyfriend had beautiful long wavy hair - I tortured him all the time playing with it, brushing it etc....and he didn't have to use any products either - just good old shampoo.

i'm more obsessed with my brows as well. it's pretty much become an every other week thing.

xdreamsunwindx 09-18-2006 09:27 PM

Eh, I brush it and flat iron it, that's about it. My hair is kind of a late-60s look - a bit past my shoulders, layers around my face, and thick lash-grazing bangs. Of course, half of it isn't even my own hair.

My *real* hair is about chin length, cut in an a-line, but I got so sick of it being short (my hair just does not grow) that I went to Sally's and just went to town with extensions. I love it, though.

If I'm feeling fancy, I'll backcomb at my roots and fix it into a pseudo beehive. Think Elvira-meets-Priscilla Presley 60s hair. It sounds dumb, but it doesn't look too bad.

Count me in among the gals that LOVE long hair (sorry Brian!) but I dont play with it, I just like the way it looks :) Long hair on guys takes me back to a more primal time, sort of a VIKING time, a knuckle-dragger time....heck I dont know I just LOVE it!

GODDESS6 09-19-2006 06:33 AM

i just cut 12 inches off of my hair~ it is still at my shoulders, gonna grow it long again, i just wanted to give it a fresh healthy start~ i am w/ the girls tho, i spend buku time on the brows, they gotta be perfect~ my hair is naturally curly & looks alot like stevie's bella donna hbo hair~ i have to use tons of conditioner becuz it is so thick, there is no way i could comb thru it w/out~ as for gel & stuff, i usually don't use it, maybe a little spray to keep the bangs in place, but i'd rather feel the silky softness & smell the good smell of clean hair than all that sticky ****~

i do prefer long hair on women, i have yet to see a short style that is very flattering at all~ maybe cuz i am a girly girly, but i can't stand when i can't tell if your a girl or boy till someone turns around & i can see their face, when it chick has short hair like a boy it really bothers me:shrug: ~

I don't mind some short styles; some people can really pull them off. But what is with this supposed age limit on long hair?

My mother keeps bugging me (I'm 35) about when I'm going to cut my hair short since I'm "getting older." Now I have curly hair and my routine consists of a daily shampoo/conditioner, combing through my hair with the conditioner in, towel dry and some sort of curl enhancer (either spray or mousse) and then I just let it dry, That's it. I don't even own a hair dryer. Whereas my mother with her short do has to blow dry her hair and use product. Why should I cut my hair and create more work for myself?

Oh...and I'm getting grey in the front and she's aghast I'm not coloring it (like she does). I just can't be bothered with the time and the expense. I think I'm going to get a recent pic of Grace Slick and send it to her!

Grace looks great with the white hair. And you're too old for long hair at 35? Oh no way. Your Mom is going to have to back off! My hair routine is a lot like yours. Although sometimes I will straighten it. Other times I'll curl around the front with a big barreled iron to create large, loose curls. I need to use product because my hair will frizz without it so I'll use a straightening balm or curling mousse, depending on what I am going for. Smooth n Shine products that I get at Target are the best I've found. Today it was the mousse and air dry! I hardly ever blow-dry my hair.

Sugar 09-19-2006 10:06 AM

^^^ I remember seeing Grace on (of all things) QVC a few years back selling some of her paintings. Her white hair was just hanging straight and loose down to about her waist and she looked FAB! I also remember the hosts being not quite sure what to do with her because she kept on swearing and saying, " I shouldn't have said that, huh?"

And my hair isn't even really "long," it's only about shoulder length. My conventional mother still just doesn't quite understand her unconventional daughter. She's always been concerned with "appearances" and "looking the part." But she's of that generation where women still seem to be shackled to percieved expectations. Not me, baby!:D

Funny you should say that. I was watching an episode of Gilmore Girls last night from Season 4. Lorelei has not had time to cut her hair and her grandmother tells her how awful it looks. She tells Emily clearly she did not tell Lorelei that her grandmother was coming or she would have cut her hair. I can't imagine. Although I did color my hair dark once and my grandmother said, "I liked it better light." quite curtly. Did she ever compliment me on it? Nope. Ahh the joys of family.

My Father's side of the family are direct descendants of Erik the Red (Also the Queen of Prussia), So maybe that is where the long hair comes from (That and being Cherokee).

Both my older brothers have long hair, my older sisters have long hair, and my Uncle Dennis (Who is about age 63) has longer hair than all of us. Funny, My Father had a crew cut and always had this to say about long hair "Long hair belongs on girls", wonder what he would think of his sons and his own brother?

Kinda funny, but back in the day when long hair was in I wore my hair short...Now the shoe is on the other foot.

As for me, I love women with long hair...Short hair doesnt cut it, man. I prefer the rocker-chick look, ala Stevie Nicks. the long locks get my attention each and everytime.

Have you ever had your stylist razor cut your hair? Razor cutting works GREAT on my wavy hair. If I see my stylist get out scissors I tell him to put them up and get out the razor. I have thick, fine hair and with a few whacks of that razor my hair is nicely thinned out with lots of movement and flippy-do's. I usually have a layered shag thing going on so the razor is a must. Anyway, you can get that thick hair thinned out if your stylist uses the right tools and techniques .

Deb, from the first moment we met until a few months before her cancer diagnosis NEVER cut her hair-A time period of roughly 12 years. Her hair was as long as she is tall (4'-11"). She is 43 and her hair is growing long again.

She cut it somewhat short (Shoulder length) to donate it to the organization that makes wigs for young cancer victims-Never knowing that months later she herself would be diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma.

During her chemo treatments people would ask her if she would do like other cancer victims and cut her hair before it fell out, She did not. which was fortunate since her hair did not fall out, which puzzled the oncologists (She asked my opinion and I told her "to wait and see IF it falls out, it may not even happen".)

She did lose hair in the back of her head during radiation treatments, kinda like a reverse Friar Tuck. More fell out for radiation than for chemo. It took awhile to grow back, so much that we asked the Radiology Oncologist when it would grow back, which he said it would in time. When it did grow back it was much thicker than it was before.

BTFLCHLD 09-19-2006 10:24 AM

My hair is superstraight. I shampoo and condition daily. I usually give myself a deep conditioning treatment every few weeks with an intensive conditioning treatment when I go to the salon for trim every eight to 10 weeks. I do have a very slight wave if I do not blow-dry my hair. I don't usually blow-dry my hair during the summer months and I definitely don't on the weekends. I like both short and long styles on men, depending upon the condition. If it is soft, I'm putty. ;)

Nooooo They tried that once it was a mess!! I have VERY thick Mexican girl hair - you can't do things to it like everyone else's hair - which is annoying. So I also have to be very choosy about hair stylists because the one who razor cut me didn't believe me when I told her my hair was different and it wouldn't fall all pretty - and it didn't - it looked horrible and I had to chop it ALL off.

I have no clue what I'll do with it once it grows out - and now people saying they don't like short hair on women makes me want to keep it short to spite society.

I have a rockin' short hair cut, and I've never been confused for a man

Well, you look great with short hair. Some women can pull it off!

My hair is different too. Most curly hair looks good when you use a diffuser. Not mine, it turns into a big poof. I had a hairstylist try it once and he was so embarrassed because he wound up having to wet it down and start all over! I don't think a razor would work on me either. Again, it would likely be a big poof!

is long, to spite society (Which is ever so f**king fun!!!!) perception of what a 36 year old man should do/look like/act like/listen to/blahblahblabbityblah. If society isnt down with that, I have two words for 'em "Suck It" (Cheap DX pop!!!)

While I do prefer long haired women, there are some who look great with short hair, so all is well

DrummerDeanna 09-19-2006 12:41 PM

Yeah - some women can definitely pull off short hair (I'm one of 'em) - but then I'm bombarded with men and women always saying, "I prefer women with long hair"

Gosh..maybe that's why I've been single so long now ;)

Seriously though - I'm not going to grow my hair out long-long - just a little more length..it'll probably still be considered short by society's standards but oh well.

I get tons of compliments on my hair now, and I do like it - but the goo and all that is tiresome - and winter's a comin' so we'll see what happens with my growing it out. I've only had really long hair once in my life - mostly it's always been short.

macmar71 09-19-2006 12:46 PM

Hair.......it has to be shoulder length...I do get it colored every 6-8 weeks in some shade of brownish-red. I do spend a bit on that but I am not a product person other than my shampoo and conditioner. No gel, hairspray or mousse for me.

estranged4life 09-19-2006 12:50 PM

My Mother...

God bless her, liked my long locks. So when I am asked why my hair is long, my reply is simple "The last time my Mom saw me in this existence I had long hair, when she sees me again in the afterlife I'll have long hair".

And if people have problems with guys having long hair, dare I add that Jesus Christ also had long hair!!! Jesus Christ: Lord, Savior, Messiah and hair-farmer??!!! I wonder though, where He bought His hair products???

irishgrl 09-19-2006 01:58 PM

I once had hair down the middle of my back and I looked like cousin it but it was golden red and very pretty. when I curled it, it really caught the light...
I had a pic on photobucket of me squinting in the sun with my golden red hair and I was skinny too! alas that was 20 years ago....and I havent seen skinny in 10 years :distress:
well, I finally learned how to scan (what a PAIN!) anyway, hope this comes out alright:

when my hair was very long, I went to Pro-Cuts to have it hacked off, the look on the female stylist was classic when I told her I wanted it cut short so it would be above my shoulders (Her mouth was hung wide open as if she had just dislocated her jaw), she enjoyed running her hands through my hair before it ended up on the floor.

Guys who say they only like girls with long hair are so dull - I like both  Just recently a girl I know cut her long hair short and her boyfriend went absolutely mad - she didn't tell him she was going to do it - anyway, I thought she looked great and told her so. well, if I have the time to let it "air dry" I do, but in the mornings I don't have that luxury. I can't go to work with wet hair, and I'll be damned if I get up at 6:00 in the morning just to give my hair time to dry:laugh: . But on days I'm just hangin' loose, I do air dry. It helps it stay healthy without the blow dryer and it's not as frizzy.

which leads me to why I use product. Since my hair turned curly (I say turned because 5 years ago it was as straight as a board) if I don't use some kind of leave in conditioner, and product-not only would I not be able to run a brush through it, but I would look like I have a lion's mane.

skcin 09-20-2006 02:49 PM

^ I agree, air drying is great, but never enough time.

My hair is very, very straight. I must use conditioner after shampoo, or I'd never get a comb through it. I've never colored or permed my hair, so it's very healthy, but it does frizz sometimes, which is way annoying. Lots of static too. I started using some Garnier Fructis crap & it seems to help a bit.

I'm due for a cut. It's been a few months. I used to keep my hair waist length in high school, but it's been between bra-strap length & just below shoulders since then.

Yeah - I fear my nose looks a little big w/ the short hair - but it'll still be big with longer hair ...I don't know why I'm on a growing my hair out kick - just am.

I was going to complement you on your gorgeous features, Im sorry, I forgot (bad me!)

My hair is not that long now, its about shoulder length, but I prefer it longer. its just that when I get perms, I have too much hair for the perm rods so I get it cut and then it grows out...

I have another pic where my hair looks golden (not red) yet the pics were only a matter of weeks apart! its a trick of the sun I think!
here's the pic:
