Discuss: Second Hand News

I've had a few requests to start "like or dislike" threads over here (I've done several in the Stevie forum) so I'm doing it. Some thought the "like or dislike" title was stupid or silly, so now it's "discuss." Happy now? Probably not.

Please contribute a review of the song, as detailed or vague as you'd like. Of course, it would be great if people would go into details about music & lyrics, but feel free to post "it's a nice song" if you must. I do ask that we respect everyone's opinions - what you may love, another may loathe. It's all subjective, so let's keep that in mind. Please. Thanks.

I think that SHN is a perfect opener for the album. The starting guitar crescendo (is that the right term? I think so...) is so cool, and makes the song just bust wide open. I can't help but smile & I always want to start dancing around when it plays. Mick's drums are light & bouncy - I don't know how else to describe them. Love the beat of the cymbals. John's bass is quite understated - I actually have to think about it to hear it, which is not really a bad thing in this case. It wouldn't have sounded right if it were too heavy. It sounds pretty funky to my ears.

The harmonies are solid. Love when Stevie goes higher for "tossed around enough." My only complaint is that I don't hear Chris well. Is she not singing on this tune, or just not as prominently as other songs on the album? Or it's jusy me, perhaps? Can someone more knowledgable than me please advise?

For being a bit of a "f*ck you" song, it's pretty damned happy. I suppose LB wanted it to sound "I don't care, none of this is going to bring me down, whatever...." If that's what he wanted to do, he achieved it in my book. The lyrics are good, nothing too mean or heavy.

Anyone want to comment on the "tall grass" line? BTW - where did that theory come from? I mean, did LB ever mention the double entendre in an interview (I just realized I've no clue how to spell that) or did people just "get it?"

SHN song continues to rock live, IMO. Every SYW show I attended, people were up & dancing, myself included. But generally, I prefer the album version a bit more. And I prefer the officially released version over the one they gave us on the remaster.

I hope Lindsey gave the Bee Gees some credit in the royalties department.

GypsySorcerer 09-14-2006 03:08 PM

I love Second Hand News. It's upbeat and lively and virtually impossible not to sing along with it. Plus, I love the "Why can't we just have sex and forget everything else?" vibe.

Villavic 09-14-2006 03:15 PM

I think is a great opener for the album, it has rhythm, it's a nice song.. I used to love the song but... recently I don't know why I jump it to the following song (not necessarilly Dreams since I have my own records).

DavidMn 09-14-2006 03:19 PM

This is probably my least favorite song on Rumours.

bikerchic 09-14-2006 03:23 PM

Love it. You pretty much covered it all bitch

What you said here. Except I actually do start bouncing around. It's my best weekend "I just woke up and I'm happy" jumping around my house song. The only thing you left out was the fun of scringing (screaming and singing) "Dowdowdowdowduhdowduhdowdowdowbowduhdowdowdowdowdowdootdowduhdowdow(dootdoodlidoo)" or whichever consonant you choose.

It is short, sweet, simple perfection. I looove the drum beat.

The thing that always sticks with me about this song was reading an article in Crawdaddy magazine about the upcoming Fleetwood Mac album entitled Yesterday's Gone and the opening "untitled track with vaguely pornographic lyrics".

God will send them all to hell for that.

chiliD 09-14-2006 03:51 PM

Well, you gotta remember, the Crawdaddy article came out a good 6 months or more before the album was released. The Rumours title was pretty much a last minute change. (As was Christine's change of the song from being the title cut to "Don't Stop") AND, considering that Lindsey wrote "Go Your Own Way" in 1975 and played it in concert for nearly a year before actually officially titling it. (Like it could have any OTHER title, Lindsey?) And, then there's "Brushes"...like "Never Going Back Again" wasn't going to be the title from the beginning?

But, then again, Bob Dylan DID title "that" song "Rainy Day Women #12 & 35". So, maybe Lindsey was trying to NOT use the "obvious". But, then, he's no Dylan.

gypsysoul 09-14-2006 03:54 PM

Whenever I go back to Rumours now this is the track I have to listen to. In the past it always played second fiddle to the other 'bigger' songs.

I agree it's a perfect opener for the album. Love everything about it.

foxyluva 09-14-2006 04:24 PM

**** this song.

Seriously though - I like it, and I included it on my best of Fleetwood Mac compilation, but the song I have heard once to many times to really get any more enjoyment out of it...

aleuzzi 09-14-2006 04:50 PM

SHN is a great tune. All the right elements are there. And yet I rarely listen to it. Go Your Own Way is the only Lindsey song from Rumors I listen to with any regularity. Hmm.

I had no idea the son was written that early. I thought he wrote it sometime in 76. Wow, the stuff you learn.

im pretty sure she doesnt sing on second hand knews
but i know theres no pianos, & actually she played the chair (hehehe) instead, not sure again though if that was just in concert
so, sorry for the pretty vague contribution....

but i think its a great song! & beautiful harmonies! even if i would love to hear christine on it!

michelle2677 09-14-2006 06:29 PM

I love second hand news. when I was a little girl, my mom used to listen to Fleetwood Mac. Of course during that time, I was young and thought it wasn't "cool" but I always remembered that "bow bow bow bow" and never quite knew who sang it or what album it was on. I couldn't quite put my finger on it. So when i bought rumours and it opened up, I was so happy. I also love the harmonies on this song.

and the best line (harmonies and lyrically)-"been down so long, i've been tossed around enough....."

It's one of my favorites on the album and seldomly skip it. :)

forgot to add also-on the SYW tour my a$$ was up dancing around as well.

I also love the guitar solo at the end

People SKIP songs on Rumours??? As much as I'm burnt out on the album and currently just loathe the album...I never skip(ped) ANYTHING on it.

michelle2677 09-14-2006 06:36 PM

I skip oh daddy. :o

But I don't listen to rumours that often either, because I have all the songs on my playlist. As a matter of fact, I just busted it out the other day and have been listening to it. But I still skip Oh Daddy.:)

I can't walk away from that song--even if I tried. :o

GODDESS6 09-14-2006 08:50 PM

i was around 9-10 when this song came out & thought it was a "naughty" song:nod:   ~ i absolutely LUV, LUV this song~ love to see it done live~

DrummerDeanna 09-14-2006 09:50 PM

I f**king LOVE this song. No matter what - when I hear that opening it makes me smile. It's just a great little song...and it makes me happy :D

JazmenFlowers 09-15-2006 09:06 AM

I love this song. I think I actually like live versions better than the album version. this song and Blue Letter are so much fun...kind of the same way as Paper Doll...I don't really read too much into it, just makes me feel like a "dancehall girl" - oh, and I always do the little Stevie tambo dance during this song and Blue Letter, but then, you already knew that. :D

That is pretty amusing.

So - has LB himself ever confirmed or denied the tall grass rumour? Damn, I wish he'd do a Q&A.

So do I. I can't STAND oh daddy - but that's mostly for personal reasons..nothing against Christine. I'm also not a huge sugar daddy fan, though that one I can at least tolerate - whereas oh daddy - always gets skipped.

BTFLCHLD 09-15-2006 02:28 PM

Paula, can you tell me what the "tall grass" theory is?

I love this song. When I bought Rumours I only knew Dreams and The Chain from when my mum would play them. [I always remembered the "Thunder only happens..." line from when I saw small and it would pop into my head every now and then even though I hadn't heard it in years.]

Second Hand News immediately became one of my favourite tracks on the album. I think maybe because I could relate to the lyrics especially well when I first heard it, but also because, musically it is, IMO, a great song. It's not overly complex but it isn't completely simple either. It was also a very cool arrangement. The ending is fantastic and the short, intense guitar solo at the end just end the song perfectly. Like all the songs on Rumours it has a great emotional charge to it but I always found Lindsey's songs connect with me the best.

Simply a fantastic song. 5 Stars from me.

elie 09-21-2006 07:39 AM

Love this song. I mean really love it. It's upbeat, it's fun, and as Paula said, it rocks live. I loved the LIB version.

PS Concerning the 'tall grass" rumour: could you please fill me in ? I am not sure I understand the double entente :o (please remember I 'm not a native speaker!!)

skcin 09-21-2006 09:36 AM

I've heard that tall grass is referring to...er...well...pubic hair. :o So "lay me down in the tall grass & let me do my stuff" could mean "would you just shut the hell up, lay down & let me bang you." In theory. If it's true. Which it may or may not be. I don't know.

Or maybe LB is just a nature lover & wants to get down on the ground in a grassy field & look for wildlife.

Ewww. I think THIS just ruined the song for me. Who came up with this theory? I've never heard pubes called GRASS!

strandinthewind 09-21-2006 12:16 PM

I have always thought he refered to performing cunnilingus

skcin 09-21-2006 12:38 PM

^ I've heard that version too. Either way - sounds pervy. :D

The pube thing - I heard it from a friend who says his dad told him he had heard that when Rumours had just come out.

Does this mean La Nicks has no treasure trail and lets her forest grow wild  :wavey:

Sounds like that friend's Dad might be a little pervy himself!

bikerchic 09-21-2006 01:50 PM

Ok, since I'm not a perv like the rest of you  Is it possible that Lindsey actually may have meant "tall grass"? Like grass? Like in a field? After all, it was the 70's, and they were hippies. I alway pictured them running through a field, holding hands, Stevie with her long, floral, flowy dress with a daisy in her hair. Lindsey with his long, dark, curly locks. Innocently laying down in the tall grass and making out? Isn't that possible? Thats what I always thought it was. You pervs :distress:

skcin 09-21-2006 02:14 PM

^ Yes, of course that could be it. Or the other thing. Bitch. :wavey:

For the record, I didn't say I thought that was the meaning, I had just heard the rumour.

bikerchic 09-21-2006 02:34 PM

I do have to admit, the first time I heard that song, back in '77, I thought, ohhhhh, that parts naughty :o :wavey:

See, I never said that I thought that was the meaning, either.
So WHO's got the pervy mind here, Bikerchic?

There's meaning to your posts?

Sidenote: I was joking ;)

elie 09-22-2006 03:43 AM

Ok, first of all, Skcin, thanks for clearing things out, as pervert as the rumour was.
I had never thought of that, (when you first said there was a a double meaning I thought it might mean something like:"let me lay down in a field and smoke some grass" or something:shrug: )

Either way, the "hippie" theory by Bikerchic rings more true to me. I never thought of LB as a "metaphor" sort of guy.
