Silver Springs on Rumours

Had Silver Springs been on Rumours would it have been the number one album of all time (in your opinion)?

Well, the reason I ask this is because-was it just the visual of stevie pointing her finger and tossing lindsey dirty looks that captured the essence of the song and made it so popular, or would it had been just as successful without the video and made rumours even more popular. I know there is really no way to answer this, but just your opinion.

also, I almost posted this in stevie forum, but I knew everyone would say "of course!!! " teehee..and I wanted a more unbiased approach. I personally thought It probably would have since it has more to it than "I don't want to know" but just for sh*ts and giggles :)

strandinthewind 09-07-2006 03:27 PM

Have you ever heard the two live recordings of it from that era. It puts The Dance version to shame with the intensity. Oh for a video!!!!!

michelle2677 09-07-2006 03:30 PM

no I havent'!!! But I have a lot of boots I havent listened to, so I'll go home and take a look (hopefully listen)

are there vids out there??? *hoping**hoping*

strandinthewind 09-07-2006 03:31 PM

Even the recorded demo endings that we heard with the re-release were awesome, never mind how awesome they were live. IMO. I think it would have been a hit, and I think Rumours would have sold just as many, if not more. Chicks love the whole "never get away from the sound of the woman that loves you" thing.

chiliD 09-07-2006 04:15 PM

Before the album was released, "Silver Springs", despite being the single's "B-side", got nearly as much airplay as "Go Your Own Way". But, no, I don't think it would've changed sales numbers that much had it been included on the album. I mean, how much MORE popular could it have gotten? Even the band itself still thinks its their only album after nearly 30 years.

I DO think it was a shame (and borderline criminal) that it wasn't included on the original CD release of Rumours as a bonus track, though.

foxyluva 09-07-2006 04:20 PM

I think the album sold as much as it was ever going to sell. Everyone that would have ever considered purchasing 'Rumours' probably already did. But, if 'Silver Springs' had been released as a single, the band would probably have another hit under their belt....

Comment: I think "Silver Springs" is on of the greatest Fleetwood Mac songs ever, and my favourite Stevie song of all time :D

Wow, I didn't know that! I wonder if some people thought, perhaps much later, "I remember hearing this really pretty song...I thought it was FM, but I haven't heard it ever again!" Because that is what I would have thought. Also, I really had never, ever heard it until the re-release. You know, on the radio, or anywhere. I know fans probably had it, but....
I agree, it should have been on the original. Oh, the time lost...It certainly is an exceptional song.

{ahem!} It WAS  ...but it was the "B-side". Now, if they would've marketed it a bit, maybe. Again, you have to remember that "hit radio" only played 3 (or shorter) minute songs..."Silver Springs" clocked in at over 5...and other than "Hey Jude", "American Pie", & "Light My Fire", there really haven't been "Hit singles" that were over 5 minutes in length. "Hey Jude" was the only one of the three that didn't get "edited", but the DJ would talk over and crossfade into the next song well before the song actually ended. So, there was a definite bias against those long songs...and then from a GIRL singer? Wasn't going to happen.

I didn't realise that B-Sides were considered 'singles'....

Well, you buy a single ( "the little record with the big hole" )...it has two sides...therefore, both sides are the single. Only radio programmers and promotion people decide what the "A" & "B" sides are. I would have bet that had "Silver Springs" been on the album, the "Go Your Own Way"/"Silver Springs" single would've been classified as a "Double A" side single (in the same way that The Beatles "Day Tripper"/"We Can Work It Out" single and "Something"/"Come Together" singles were) and both songs would've continued to get massive airplay. When the album came out WITHOUT "Silver Springs", that killed its airplay (why promote a song that isn't on the album?) and "Go Your Own Way" continued to get double the airplay after that.

I don't consider a B-side a single either. And when GYOW charted I'm pretty certain chart rundowns only mentioned GYOW and not the song on the flipside.

JazmenFlowers 09-07-2006 05:12 PM

I agree that it may not have changed the sales of Rumours, but I think it would've been a number 1 hit.

I second that! theyre both fantastic!

There's a classic rock station here in Maine that plays the original recording of Silver Springs from time to time. :) It also plays Lindsey's song, Trouble, and Bob Welch's Ebony Eyes. SOMEONE there is a FM fan!!

ok, so I actually had both of these. Kansas City and Milwaukee right?? I listened to both of them. I LOVE KC. I get chills on my legs, people!!! When she says "I KNOW I could have loved you" at about 3:31 in the song is awesome. The trill in her voice almost makes me cry.

Milwaukee wasn't all that. It was very slow and mournful. Not very "following you down-like" But on a high note of this version-I love stevie's use of "well" so much. She does it in other songs. It's like.."well..your ass better listen up because I'm getting ready to say something important!!!

well, to be fair to the milwaukee performance, i think that tape may be slowed down. in addition to being a slower tempo, it's also about a half-step lower.

michelle2677 09-07-2006 08:02 PM

well, it also seems very shaky to me. Like, she cant decide if she wants to sing it high or low. I'm assuming it was the first live performance?? So maybe she was a little nervous.

Thanks! Martha

Yep, that's my story! I remembered the song from the radio when I was a kid, and hunted for it when I got a little older(teenage) and I finally bought a japanese import single. I couldn't forget the "follow you down till the sound..." part. It was just stuck in my head all those years.

Thank you, my Mac friend. :] This is fabulous! :blob2:

michelle2677 09-09-2006 02:08 PM

^^Isn't it though? I've been listening to it non-stop. I made my friend listen to it all the way to Nashville yesterday.

bikerchic 09-09-2006 05:17 PM

Thanks for posting this. Did she perform this song on the whole tour and if so why is there no video out there of a SS performance?

SpyNote 09-10-2006 04:18 AM

I remember radio playing Silver Springs a lot in my area (K101 FM in San Francisco) when I was growing up. They always mentioned how it got booted off Rumours.

I prefer "Ill follow you down 'til the sound of my voice will haunt you" part.

And - on the piano demo - she clearly says "I cast a spell on you - you won't forget me"

tdfwiner 09-10-2006 01:07 PM

anyone have a copy of the Milwaukee version that they can upload?

I dont think it would've been any more of a hit than it HAD already been. The mega success of that album is about as big as any artist could hope to achieve. I dont think the song itself would've been a radio "hit"...besides, it was available as a B-side back then. At any rate, its BACK on the CD version of Rumours, the way it should have been.

It is at the end and I am pretty sure she says "I" and not "time" - again, this is the piano demo. I will post it when I get home.

I totally get what everyone is saying, but YES!! There COULD have been more sales. I want Thriller OUT OF THERE!! ha ha...I don't want just number one of the 70's. I want all time.

No, just the first few shows, as far as I know anyway. I believe we have 2 audio version in circulation, but no video. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Thank you. Finally, someone answered my question. JK. :)

SpyNote 09-11-2006 04:12 PM

I think Silver Springs had the potential to go Top 10 had it been released as a formal A-side single. 20/20 hindsight, of course. Rumours just had so much momentum behind it, and Mac was the "in" group at the time, so they could have released anything, even the somber "Oh Daddy," and radio would have eaten it up.

gldstwmn 09-11-2006 04:24 PM

Here's the piano demo Strandie was talking about.
