Jessica Simpson To Cover "Dreams"
 I just got this today from Google Alert, I am not sure if this is old news or what, but I figured I would post it. I hope I understood this article correctly lol
Jessica SimpsonBy Justine Parker August 25, 2006 04:39pm POP-singer-turned-actress Jessica Simpson says her latest album isn't about her high-profile marriage and divorce from ex-husband, former boybander Nick Lachey. No, really. But naming the album - and first single - A Public Affair certainly won't harm sales. For her fourth studio album - her first since 2003's In This Skin - Simpson has assembled a collection of pop tunes, ballads, country and club tracks which are largely uninspired and lightweight. There's also a heavy reliance on samples and pop references. The opening track, A Public Affair, opens with a rip-off of Madonna's 80s smash Holiday. The rest of the track has a light, summery feel, but lacks enough punch to become a bonafide summer hit. The country-flavoured Walkin' 'Round in a circle, lets the southern belle side of Simpson come out, but the so-called "interpolations" from Fleetwood Mac's 70s hit Dreams are so obvious that it makes you wish you were listening to the original. Simpson does create a new genre with the countrified 70s funk of Push Your Tush, which samples 70s funk/R'n'B legends The Ohio Players. But whoever let her think covering Dead Or Alive's 80s megahit You Spin Me Round was a good idea should be hang their head in shame. This could be the most gratuitous cover ever recorded. The only track where Simpson really is on fire is the Scott Storch produced Fired Up. While it does include an awkward rap refrain where Simpson appears to be channelling Gwen Stefani on Hollaback Girl, it's definitely the most dancefloor-friendly track. The rest of the album is a pleasant and forgettable mix of ballads, R'n'B-lite and chart-friendly pop. JESSICA SIMPSON A Public Affair Epic/Sony BMG |
The article meant that the song "Walkin' Round in a Circle" imitates the sound of "Dreams".
On Edit: I just listened to it, and it does have a similar type of sound. The way the vocals are layerd also reminds me of the "Dreams" sound. |
ugh what a botch..what's next Britney does Sara?

I went to allmusic.com, and the names listed as composers for that song are "Austin, Harris, Lewis, Nicks, Simpson". It looks like they are giving Stevie some kind of credit.
This Jessica Simpson bint is of no value. How many people's songs can she hijack without feeling any shame? When she isn't releasing pointless covers (Berlin's "Take My Breath Away" and Nancy Sinatra's "These Boots Are Made for Walkin'") of hit songs, she is cannibalizing their elements. One of her first hits, "I Think I'm in Love with You" was John Mellencamp's "Jack and Diane" regurgitated, and now she is barfing up Madonna and Fleetwood Mac. At any point will she ever feel like making a musical mark of her own? Or is she content with the easy profit of mimicking established artists? |

Like I said, I listened to it. I'm listening to it again and there is nothing hijacked from "Dreams" directly that I can hear. It's definately got a similar sound, mostly in the instrumentation, so I'm actually surprised Stevie would get any credit. It's actually not a bad song at all. This isn't anything like when she used "Jack and Diane". Certainly can't call it a cover, but as far as covers go, Stevie's done a few covers herself, try as we might to forget her version of "Just Like a Woman". And Madonna? Didn't she just "barf up" a big 'ol pile of Abba. The sampling of music has been around for a while, and it's a formula that seems to be pretty successful in a monetary way for artists, so I can't say I blame them. I used to have a friend who would say "Hate the game, not the player". |
The whole album is filled with samples from older stuff like Madonna, The Cars and other 80's music - probably why they credited Nicks on that track, they probably sampled it lifting either some of the music, a beat or textures from it.

I'm embarrassed to say I kinda like that song with the rollerskating video.

Madonna very (in)famously covered Don MacLean's "American Pie." Unfortunate because she ruined a classic. Of course, I may be biased because I hate Madonna. |
^ No, it's not your bias. I like Madonna, and she DID ruin American Pie.
BTW - I've heard that Jessica is actually covering Patty Griffin's "Let Him Fly" on her new CD (which has also done by the Dixie Chicks.) :( I'm scared. Very scared. The sad thing is that I think Jessica can actually sing, if she would cut the **** - and by **** I mean her bizarre facial expressions, attempts at runs, oversinging & using that annoying baby-talk singing voice. Barf. |

Isn't that like saying that "Black Dog" was a cover of "Oh Well?"

I'm sick of old crap, I want something new, fresh and innovative. Everything these days seems to be old recycled crap. Even cRap is old. And everyone else is rehashing the same old crap. I'm tired of Retro already; thanks, but let's move on. I realize there's only so much you can do with music before everything becomes recycled. BUT... there's got to be something out there just waiting to burst onto the scene and change music forever, again. I'm thinking sitar, electric guitar, rock operas and synthesizers. 'Cmon all you imaginative inventive type people, I want the next big thing... before I die of old age, please.

Where's the smiley with the machine gun when you need it? Can't that reality show leftover just stay away? At least Stevie is taking some rights from this.

I am with you guys!!! LOL Bring on the guns blazing!!!!!!!!!!!!
I too am sick of these artists getting paid ridiculous amounts of money just to copy others!! And well, it doesn't help much that Jessica just bugs the hell outta me anyway LOL She has gone completely HOOCHIE and she has no brains. Anyone else remember the cover she did a few years back, where she used John Mellencamps "Jack and DIane" and just changed the words? LOL   |

Here's a link to the song if anyone is interested:
http://music.aol.com/songs/new-relea...-public-affair It's far from a cover, it samples some of the notes from Dreams that's all. It's nothing terribly interesting IMO and most certainly nothing to get too worked up over. |
 NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
|
Theres a definite resemblance although its a lot more "airy" whereas dreams was more bluesy. and better.
|
You know I was thinking about this on the way to work this morning and as much as some of you are turning your nose up there is something positive to be said - at least our girl is still relevant today. We may not like the content or the people involved but it's still an honor to have current artists covering/sampling her songs. It's paying homage to Stevie and I'm glad people enjoy her music enough to want to keep bringing it back. Just my two cents.

interpolations
That's what they call those vocal warblings? Please Lord, let me never hear this cover. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
On edit: so it isn't a cover after all, phew. |

These young talent can't write, can't sing, can't act on tv and the movies, but I will give them a chance,I know I probably wont like it. I love the Dixie Chicks Landslide cover.btw thats why we have so much reality tv on television these days because of the good talent shortage.

http://www.wfaa.com/sharedcontent/dw...1.3ebf101.html CD review: Simpson's 'Affair' syrupy, familiar CD REVIEW: Pop-hits sampler won't leave you fulfilled 08:02 AM CDT on Tuesday, August 29, 2006 By JON M. GILBERTSON / Special Contributor to The Dallas Morning News A televised marriage and a tabloid-saturating divorce do not enhance artistic credibility, so it's probably smart that Jessica Simpson not attempt to make a particularly serious matter out of A Public Affair . It's a Pop-Tart, not a balanced breakfast. The processed-sugar content could induce the aural equivalent of a diabetic coma. The title track is already in heavy rotation, and its sticky-fingered use of early Madonna hooks and the Motown classic "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" is practically subtle compared with some other (licensed) steals on the album. "B.O.Y.," for example, nabs its crunchy riff from the Cars' "Just What I Needed." Fountains of Wayne did more or less the same thing with "Stacy's Mom" but also reconfigured the rip-off into clever homage. Ardent pop fan she might be, but Ms. Simpson doesn't achieve that level of ingenuity by draping the central hook of Fleetwood Mac's "Dreams" over "Walkin' 'Round in a Circle" or "adapting" Louis Prima's "Sing, Sing, Sing (When You Swing)" into "Swing With Me." Putting aside the Prima track and the unflattering comparisons the CD draws to Christina Aguilera's Back to Basics, most of the original material on A Public Affair gasps in the thin air of Ms. Simpson's voice. She's most convincing when putting on a little-girl mien or pursing her lips in fashion-model mode, so not even hit-making producer Scott Storch can raise the temperature on tepid R&B such as "Fired Up," and Lester Mendez can only minimize embarrassment on the dance-floor faux gospel of "The Lover in Me." If Ms. Simpson didn't show flashes of shrewdness – a cover of Dead or Alive's "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)" is a natural, and "Push Your Tush" is good for a slightly choked laugh – A Public Affair would remain the labor of what she was before her dubious fame: a third-string Britney Spears. BOTTOM LINE: A Kylie Minogue record, minus the experienced sexiness and healthy sense of proportion. Jessica Simpson C+ A Public Affair (Epic) |
alright. here goes. I like Jessica. I used to love her. I've been slipping away for a while, but after previewing her album today, I think I'm done. it sucks. the song with Dreams interpolations or whatever they're called sucks.
nail. meet coffin. |
I couldn't get through all of the Dreams song....and "Push Your Tush?" WTF is she saying at the beginning? Cock-a-cock-a-cock-a-doodle-do? There's a joke in there somewhere.
Oh, btw, Perez Hilton is reporting that Jessica and John Mayer are the newest star couple. |

i like jessica & got her new cd pre-ordered from her site so it was cheap~
i like it, i mean it is syrupy pop, def not stevie, but i love to listen to all different kinds of music excluding britney sprears, i have always loathed her~ jess does some sampling on this cd, but anymore it seems all the new up & comers do~ oh well i like it:o  ~ "push your tush" is just silly, being a native texan, i think she is poking fun of herself~ b.o.y, has a riff form "the cars" in it~ jessiaca & xtina are about the only pop singers out there that i can't actually listen to~ |
