How effing cool are these guys!!??

I have only just been introduced to them, and already the album "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots" has become one of my all time favourite albums!

oh, sorry, at first i thought you meant you had some horrible STD.

i like "do you realize?" but overall, they're a little too soft-art-rock for me.

trackaghost 08-13-2006 06:57 PM

I feel almost this thread is for the benefit of me, because I adore the Lips and my obsession had re-emerged with the release of their new album, At War With The Mystics (click on the chart in my sig and you'll see they're my most played band).
I'm a long time fan, I first saw them live in the mid 90s.
If you love Yoshimi you definitely have to buy The Soft Bulletin, which IMO is their masterpiece. I also love their rockier stuff like Hit To Death In The Future Head, Transmissions From The Satellite Heart and Clouds Taste Metallic - all great!
Happy to see other Lips fans here. It warms my heart. :D

I'm a long time fan, I first saw them live in 1995.

I have got quite a few of the groups albums at work, I just took home "Yoshimi" to listen to a couple of nights back. Now that I know I love them you can be sure I will be getting the other albums

My friend however did tell me that the new album is on the boring side - he did rave about "The Soft Bulletin" though.....

xxxmx 08-13-2006 07:15 PM

i loooooove the flaming lips! they are the BEST live. wayne crawls into an inflated bubble and rolls over the crowd. i've had a few dreams where i shared that bubble with him....

yoshimi is a great album, Do You Realize?? is hands down my favorite track from that album. the new one is good but i'm not obsessed with it. the Hit and Clouds albums are probably my favorites - they're the ones i've listened to for years and years and years. Satellite Heart got me started on them, but i lost that album almost immediately and never bothered to replace it.

mmm. wayne...

i have band friends who were thisclose to getting me onstage to dance with the band at langerado but that didn't work out. i'm fine with that. i had a better time staring at wayne from the front than i would have sweating my ass off in a furry costume, waving a flashlight for two hours. wayne...

trackaghost 08-13-2006 07:19 PM

The new album is patchy but there's still some fantastic stuff on it: The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song, The WAND, It Overtakes Me, Free Radicals, Haven't Got A Clue, they're all top stuff.
I would recommend listening to The Soft Bulletin, then Clouds Taste Metallic. If you like Clouds then try Transmissions From The Satellite Heart and At War With The Mystics. I warn you though that their 1980s stuff is very different. They were hugely influenced by the Butthole Surfers back then, and it's very trippy, weird and punky. Their first few records aren't much cop but from In A Priest Driven Ambulance on it's pretty solid stuff.
You should check 'em out live too. Now that is an experience.

foxyluva 08-13-2006 07:22 PM

There are some really heavy lyrics on "Yoshimi" - like this one;

"Do you Realise that everyone you know will die?"

I was like - Wow

I love you xxxmx! I've had two opportunites to meet Wayne and both times fate has stood in my way. I guess I too am meant to just stare at him from afar.
Let us share our Wayne love with this picture:

Not a fan...

but they do have my respect since they are originally an Oklahoma based band (Originally from Norman-Home of the University of Oklahoma).

They have an upcoming gig at the OKC Zoo Amphitheatre which will be sold out.

BlackWidow 08-13-2006 07:35 PM

I thought you meant an STD - Like "Your walls are flaming!"

Livia 08-13-2006 10:45 PM

I just watched their cover of Bohemian Rhapsody, up on youtube, earlier today. They're opening for Tom Petty at ACL. I'm looking forward to it!

Really? That is so cool - you Americans are so lucky, you get to see all the famous band/groups all the time - in New Zealand we only get to see them if they are kind enough to stop by for a show or two :(

Livia 08-13-2006 10:51 PM

Here ya go!

Thanks, but its not the same :( I would really love to go to one of these Petty/Nicks shows, but alas, I instead have to live in paradise

I'm a little late to this thread... but I LOVE the Flaming Lips! Like everyone else said, you have to get "Soft Bulletin" next. I saw them with Beck (another fav. of mine) a few years ago... great show!

DavidMn 08-14-2006 03:40 PM

The only way I've known about them is that theyre always right next to Fleetwood Mac on the cd racks.

Wow, really? I must admit I can't imagine you listening to tracks of theirs like Psychiatric Explorations Of The Fetus With Needles, but that's cool. I am duly impressed :D

I wish I could have gone to the Petty/Nicks shows too, esp when Eddie Vedder made a guest appearance on stage. That would be one of my dream gigs. Come to England Michael and we can go see The Flaming Lips. They're playing London in November, it'll be great

What a rip-off of the video of Bob Dylan's "Subterranean Homesick Blues".

Steve are you taking the piss?
It's meant to be a joke. Of course it's a "rip off" Subterranean Homesick Blues, a hugely famous and influential video. That is the whole point. Don't you understand a homage when you see one?

Sounds like a plan :wavey: Now if only I could find an extra $2000 dollars for the plane tickets

I went to work this afternoon and picked up a further 3 Flaming Lips albums: At War with the Mystics, The Soft Bulletin and Ego Tripping at the Gates of Hell - so I will give those a good listening to, and let you know what I think :)

trackaghost 08-16-2006 04:08 PM

So did you listen? Tell me what you thought... :D

So far I have listened to half of 'At War with the Mystics' and half of 'The Soft Bulletin' - I have only had the time to listen to them in the car on the way to class, but I promise to listen to them by Sunday :D

Some of those tracks on "At War..." are not to good - the first and second tracks made me almost cringe :sorry: But maybe they just take some getting used to....

trackaghost 08-16-2006 04:21 PM

Yeah, a lot of people are disappointed by AWWTM. I kinda like the first song though, it does grow on you and it's awesome live. The WAND is really cool too. That's nearer the end of the album.
The Soft Bulletin, now that's a kick-ass album. Let me know what you think!

Mari 08-19-2006 04:26 PM

Sharon, that vid you posted made me laugh:thumbsup:
anyway, I LOVE their last album, but it's the first thing of them I know. So I didn't have anything to compare it to, yet.
Only just got to know The Soft Bulletin as well, quite different, isn't it? Very good though! Hope to catch them live some day.

trackaghost 08-19-2006 04:46 PM

Mari, have I told you lately that you ROCK! :D
I thought that video was a pretty funny take-off of the Bob Dylan video too.

Anyway, yeah the new album is pretty different to The Soft Bulletin and then that's quite a bit different to their grunge-era stuff. And then there's their really weird, out-there 80s stuff. They're a band that have certainly changed a lot over the years, that's for sure.

I can post some MP3s if you want to hear some of their other stuff.
Let me know.

shackin'up 08-19-2006 05:09 PM

putthemupyoumusiclover. start with new stuff please.

Mari 08-19-2006 05:24 PM

please post some!:xoxo:
