Make Me A Mask
I dont know what it is, but I've never really listrened to this song much. Maybe cause its on the box set, I'm not sure. But I'm really getting into it lately alot. WHo else likes it?
|
I have always loved this song, not hurt by the fact that it contains one of my all time favorite lyrics:
If I had known this was only a dream, I would have waken from this sleep Then again, I love just about everything Buckingham has ever recorded, so I'm just a little biased. |

My Buckingham obsession is waning, so I'm a bit rusty on my trivia. |

Strange song, but then again - its totally something Lindsey would do
I love the guitar riff in this song - one of his best! |
I hardly ever listen to it ... it's a little strange to me. I do love Goodbye Angel on the boxest, though.
|
I like it a lot - one of his better songs to my non-Buckingham-Nicks-obsessed mind. It reminds me of old Steve Miller songs :)

And, Lindsey is playing a sitar on this one...at least, the main riff of the song is played on it. |
Make Me A Mask was recorded during the Out of the Cradle era. Probably Lindsey decided not to put it on the album because it didn't really "fit" with the other songs, I suppose.

Although the liner notes on the boxed set doesn't say it, I also have an Australian 2 CD issue called Fleetwood Mac, Selections from 25 Years, which says "From the Album Mirage" on the liner notes to "Make Me a Mask."

I don't think it's from the early '80s. I think it's from the late '80s or early '90s. Didn't Lindsey mention the track in a magazine interview at some point? Also, does anyone hear a shamisen or a koto on this track? or is that just the sitar? This track may foreshadow Lindsey's conscious delving into Asian atmosphere & musical structure--with a minor twist on the traditional five-tone scale--on the "Tango in the Night" album. Even the lyrics have a Japanese compactness & focus on nature. Was Lindsey listening to Kitaro or Sakamoto? |
To answer the question of "how do I know" it's an OOTC song, you'll just have to take my word. I remember reading about it once in a discussion either here or maybe on the Legacy a while back, and someone I believe posted a magazine interview or something where Lindsey comments that the song was recorded during the OOTC sessions. I remember thinking, "Wow, that song would have been cool on OOTC," but I don't remember when or where it was. Sorry if this is "unreliable" to anyone here, but then again, who can say anything for sure with this spastic band we all love and obsess over?
