All Gone

The other day I decided to "clean out" my computer. I organized all of our digital photos, and I *thought* I merged all of my music into one big folder. I just sat down a few minutes ago because I was (finally) going to burn a CD- only to find out that I inadvertantly erased my entire collection. Every single Stevie/FM/ANYONE song or video is completely gone. Years and years of collecting. I am so devastated. And pissed at myself. :distress:

amber 07-08-2006 04:47 PM

  :( :( :(

I'm so, so sorry. I could send you everything I have if that would help. Did you lose any main videos, like Mirage or Belladonna HBO? I mean, that you didn't have copies of. I have a ton of music.

Geez, that's terrible. :distress:

No to Mirage, but yes to Belladonna HBO- I'm DYING! I wouldn't even know where to start as far as what to ask for. I need to recover from my trauma right now, but maybe I'll make this my request thread, if you guys don't mind.

I did something similar...

several years back (Around 1999-2000) when I somehow deleted a complete "Real Audio" music website that I spent the better part of a year building/constructing...Let's just say my 'then' keyboard went into a somewhat short vertical/altitude orbit.

And like you I was pissed at myself for not having it backed up on my server (Unlike my current websites).

madformac 07-08-2006 05:08 PM

If you haven't written over the hard drive areas that stored the music you should be able to recover them hopefully. Only the file headers will have been deleted with any luck. There are a few products on the market that can recover lost data I'm sure.. Have a look around the net, there may be something that will work. :wavey:

gldstwmn 07-08-2006 05:38 PM

Let me know if I can post anything for you.

that's what I was going to say.

Jannie, I'm so sorry. this has happened to me before and now I have an external hard drive. I would call a repair shop and see what they suggest and then if all is lost, we will figure a way to get your collection back up. I could send you my external hard drive to load on your computer and then send back to me. we'll figure it out. PM me if you need to.

jannieC 07-08-2006 06:47 PM

madformac- clear out your PM's :)

Thank you so much- I'll let you know if I'm unable to fix this. madformac and I are on a mission right now...

madformac 07-08-2006 06:56 PM

Janet, stay on The Ledge.

I'm going to pm you a way to hopefully recover these files without software but it will take me a few minutes to type it out in laymans terms.

Not moving. And thank you for understanding the need for laymen's terms. Are there terms even less than laymen?

I'm typing it on a word document then I'll paste it in a pm. be about 5 mins..

jannieC 07-08-2006 07:25 PM

My new friend madformac tried to help me, but to no avail. So, I am going to start from scratch and start collecting again. I'm telling myself this may be fun. So what I was thinking was- maybe everyone can post their favorite Mp3 or video here. And maybe some newbies can benefit from this as well. Thanks to everyone and especially madformac for trying so hard to help.

ragandbone 07-08-2006 07:55 PM

I am sorry to hear this - it's happened to me before, usually just before I think I should back everything up! The external hard drive is a good idea, for the next time.

jannieC 07-08-2006 08:55 PM

Ok I've spent a really long time in front of the computer this evening, so I'm just going to post a lost of the types of things I had and would like to RE-have if at all possible. :o Then, if anyone wants to share, it would be greatly appreciated:

Mp3's: Any great live recordings of Edge, GDW, Rhiannon, SOTM, BATB, Go Your Own Way, Gold and Braid, After the Glitter Fades

Videos: WWD/Belladonna, Mirage (okay, I didn't have this, but I figured since I'm asking), anything Wild Heart related, the dressing room thingie, Nightbird on Solid Gold, That one with Bob Welch- Caljam, I think?

So- obviously I'm not expecting anyone to post full videos- even a song or two would be nice. I can't even think anymore of what else I would like. Let me just thank you all again in advance- I hope some newbies are watching this thread and will benefit from this as well. :xoxo:

Für Elise 07-08-2006 11:13 PM

That sucks. Are you willing to pay somebody to recover the data? When you delete files the computer doesn't actually erase them, it just allocates that space as able to be written over by new files. Some technicians will be able to run a program that will easily recover all the data.

Wow, what a great way to wake up. I actually dreamt of this mess last night. Thank you SO SO much- I am downloading and about to drink my coffee while listening!

SuzeQuze 07-09-2006 11:04 AM

This really sucks Janet. So I guess you are not going to try to have a tech recover your data? This just happened to a friend of mine at work, well actually her whole computer crashed and she lost everything. She had backed up but not for a while. She got some kind of spyware thing from the net. She is quite computer savy so this scared me into spending money I don't really have on an external hard drive.

I got a Seagate 100 gig drive from Best Buy. It is awesome for peace of mind. My computer is a little older though, 5 years, so I had to upgrade my USB but it was very easy. It's a good thing I know something about computers though because the clerk tried to sell me the wrong thing. But it all worked out.

The good news is that Stevie/FM fans are quite generous and you will have your collection going strong again in no time.

Things are pretty tight for us right now so I'm not really in the position to call a tech. I'm optimistic though, I've already gotten a ton of great music. I will definitely spend the money on an external drive- wait, how much do they run? ;)

While I'm here, does anyone have Kind of Woman?

I have this one. Unfortunately, my music folder was reorganized by ITunes a while back, so I am not clear about the origins of this MP3. The tag says, Kind of Woman: Bella Donna and Master comp."
