Mirror Mirror

ok, how many versions are there out there? I only have 2. anyone care to share?

what's this song about...do you think? I think it's one of Stevie's greatest unknowns.

crtrofthenight 07-07-2006 06:58 PM

Mirror Mirror

Well, It's always been one of my favorites but truly, the lyrics are so filled with imagery that I really think only Stevie and her closest friends know the meaning behind the song...I'm sure the line..."darker than the image on the wall (the mirror on the wall) is the fear of it all" probably might suggest her being haunted with her image to the point of almost paranoia. Something that touches deep in her soul.... the darkness of her songs, the darkness of her image and her music....She's so haunted! I love it!
...You MUST know....He said no, not really.

BlackWidow 07-07-2006 07:24 PM

I hate when most fans think every song is about Lindsey.
BUT..I think this one is about Lindsey. "I think you walk a thin line"
Lindsey sings I walk A Thin Line on TUSK.
He said "See ya!" - he left FM.Mirror Mirror was the original title of Rock A Little..FYI.

StreetAngel86 07-07-2006 11:34 PM

Yea..I heard #3..THANK YOU!!!
They have more lyrics that fill in the blanks from the released version.
It is about Lindsey. No doubt.

I'm amazed this came out as late at Street Angel. It has such an 80's Miami Vice feel, doesn't it? Can't you just see Don Johnson driving down the streets of Miami to this?

Well, Johnny Stew told me it was actually cut in 1985 or so.

And Johnny Stew is always right. ;)

Yeah, it was recorded for 'Rock A Little,' with Keith Olsen producing, but wasn't released until they threw it on the b-side of the "Blue Denim" single.

I always thought it was so strange that they chose to release a song Stevie recorded in 1985 as the B-side to a 1994 release. And those 2 songs so don't go together, Blue Denim and Mirror Mirror. Mirror Mirror is so RAL and should have been on the album. It's like "for Klonopin Stevie please listen to the A-side and for coked out Stevie please refer to the B-side"

I have a bunch of different takes of it--or have they already been mentioned in this thread? I think the instrument tracks are all the same but Stevie is just revocalizing from one to the other.

Record companies want you to buy the single, and this is just a little bonus, something unreleased. If you are a fan you'll buy the album, and if the b-side to the single was on the album, there would be no need to buy it, but if there is an unreleased track, or an alternate version, it just entices you to go for it.

That makes sense, thanks MacMan.

I do not have a lot of time online every day so I can't upload that much stuff due to dialup. It would have taken me almost 4.5 hours to load the ones I have. and the bad thing is that the ones I have I do not know how they equate to the ones posted here. All I know for sure is that I have a version named
RockingALittle_12_MirrorMirror.mp3 but it is not as clear as the one Nancy has on www.buckinghamnicks.net. If it is not one of the ones posted contact me and I will send it to ya ...........

To me, this is one of the most frustrating tracks that Stevie has ever recorded. I love the music. The guitar riff is monstrous and catchy. The cheesy synths swell with drama and foreboding. She sings the **** out of it. A few of the lyrics hint at an eruption of fury, rage, and explosive revelation, then....nothing. There is no meat to the story. It hints at things. It presents dramatic and vague images. The music builds toward a bombastic and shocking chorus, bridge, or something. But it peters out and never quite delivers. Never has a song promised so much and delivered so little. This song is all foreplay and no climax. It is the musical equivalent of blue balls.

I adore this song. I wonder what Stevie didn't like about it. I think she should have put it on "Rock a Little" and named that album "Mirror Mirror", as originally planned. I remember buying the Blue Denim cassette single and listening to Mirror Mirror in my car and totally freaking out. The love those vocals!!

dmartnyc 07-09-2006 09:26 AM

I always thought that "Mirror Mirror" as it appeared on the flip side of "Blue Denim" was re-recorded for the TimeSpace album, and was ultimately not included on that album. If you listen to the vocals, they are so much more early 90s Stevie vocals than RAL-era vocals. And the version that appeared on the single sounds nothing like any of the RAL-era demos floating out there.

THAT IS SO TRUE!
She had trouble cramming so many lyrics into one cohesive song.
The official lyrics of Mirror/Mirror contain more information than the B-side that was released on Blue Denim. It always struck me as an incomplete song.
The demos have most of the original lyrics intact..take a listen.

I have heard all the original lyrics, and some of them help a bit. Ultimately though, even with the complete lyrics, you are right. It is an incomplete song. It almost feels like she was writing around the real subject.

I think it is ultimately about Lindsey.
I think the "haunted in your mirror" - is look what you lost ala Dreams..
"haunted" ala Silver Springs...to Lindsey. Haunted:eek: is like a punishment.
It's about her having to go on..without him in the band.
"and then there are the misunderstandings" etc......lol.

If that is true I don't ever want to know it. Since this is pre Tango, I don't know about the leaving the band reference. Nonetheless, it isn't worth it to me to split hairs over it. The idea of any song being written about Lindsey post Tusk makes me want to harf up my entire GI tract.

hmcannally 07-10-2006 02:57 AM

I am amazed still that Mirror, Mirror did not make to the Rock A Little album and only became a B side. I love the sound and lyrics of the song. Heck, there is not much by Stevie that I don't like.

I can finally admit to everyone now, that I'm Stevie's greatest love. We met right after the 'Dance' tour, and we were so deeply in love that we talked about spending the rest of our lives together. When she left me to go on the 'Enchanted' tour, it broke my heart so deeply that I swore off of women for good.

Stevie Nicks turned me gay, folks.

sometimes I wonder, spark, whether Rhiannon is about Lindsey. . .

that whole "bird in flight" thing seems to really describe Lindsey, plus the fact that his mom rutheda used to say to him "You are like a cat in the dark," & then sometimes his brother would add: "No, mom, but he is the darkness." I suspect that Lindsey figures prominently in Rhiannon as the Welsh mabinogion goddess of steeds & placer of bets & so forth.
