"Golden Girls" Seasons 1, 2 & 3 for my Mom (she has the rest.)
At the moment, I have no dvd on my wishlist.
Scratch that! I want "The Libertine" with Johhny Depp. JD makes for excellent dreams.
Has it been released? I haven't had the time to keep up on new releases and I am too sleepy to check now!

You are definitely my gay boyfriend for this evening.
Hey, what's in the Bette Davis collection volume 2? I guess I could look it up, but I thought I'd make conversation...:)

David - I always thought it was Vittorio De Sica. Not that that is especially important.

David, you might want to wait a few weeks. Deepdiscountdvd.com usually has a 20 percent of sale in mid to late June with free shipping. I saved a bunch of money last year. I don't know for sure that they'll do it again this year, I'll let you know if they do.

My next dvd purchases will be "Arrested Development Season 3" and "The League of Gentlemen Season 3". I think there are a few more that I want but I can't think of them right now.

I'm so sorry, I thought I heard around here that you were gay. Hey, I guess you can be my regular boyfriend! Even better! :woohoo:

You know, I've never seen Marked Woman? Isn't that weird? Old Acquaintance and the Man Who Came to Dinner are a bit dull, if my memory serves me...No, wait, Old Acquaintance is with Miriam Hopkins? If so, that one is good!
What's in the Baby Jane special edition?
Jezebel....well, do I really have to say anything about that one? Perfect, wonderful, Bette at her best. It sucks that was made the same year as GWTW, otherwise she would've got the Oscar for sure.

Copied from Amazon:

Commentary by author and film historian Charles Busch and film historian John Epperson (a/k/a "Lypsinka")
New documentary "Bette and Joan: Blind Ambition"
1994 documentary "All About Bette" hosted by Jodie Foster
"A Film Profile: Joan Crawford" featurette
"The Andy Williams Show" excerpt featuring Bette Davis
Vintage featurette: "Behind the Scenes with Baby Jane"

The Andy Williams clip is of Bette singing a rock song called "Whatever Happened To Baby Jane?" That's worth the price of the boxset right there I think!

I'm eager to watch this properly. The last time I saw it I think was about 10 years ago, and I didn't even make it through the whole thing.

I'm more of a Joan person anyway. I can't wait till she gets a volume 2 collection.

 I haven't seen any of that stuff! I totally want that now! Jodie Foster is ideal to host that.

Oh, it's incredible. Heeey, maybe it will switch you to a Bette Person!
I've never liked Joan. And then, when Bette and Joan, the book, came out - well, obviously I had to choose sides! Have you read that book?

I love Joan too much to switch sides. I've got that book. I found it fascinating. I only ever got into Joan because of Bette. So I'll be forever grateful to Bette for that. The problem I find is that even in Joan's stinkers theyre still enjoyable, but when Bette makes a crap movie, it's unwatchable! (Not that I'm in any way suggesting Jezebel falls into that category!)

Really???? I feel the opposite. I think Bette is always interesting to watch, crap movie or not. In fact, sometimes she's waaay better if the movie is crap. I dig the way she chews the scenery.
Admittedly, I've always thought Joan is very ugly, so that doesn't help. But, I also think she's not as good an actress ("She couldn't act her way out of a paper bag!").
So, this is interesting - what exactly are the qualities you like about Joan? Since I don't like her much, it would be great to see the good someone else sees in her.
I admire the longevity of both actresses. They just wanted to work, and they did.
For you Aries out there, those are two of the best! :p

I think Joan is one of the most beautiful actresses from the golden age of Hollywood. Especially from about '40-'45. I find her to be very commanding, like when she's onscreen you can't look at anything else. Her voice, her mannerisms I just love. Watching Baby Jane I agreed with the consensus that Bette was an actress and Joan was a star, but given the right role she could knock your socks off.

There's a hint of menace in Joan that I find intriguing too. In films like Queen Bee, and parts of Mildred Pierce I can see it. It's like she's someone you don't want to turn your back too. I love that hint of danger in her.

There's a pretty cool Joan video collage on youtube.com

http://youtube.com/watch?v=5goOPgau7Vs

Her delivery of some of the lines in that is just great. (EG: "I thought you were aware by this time that I'm not someone to be sent for like a kitchen maid" and "and you, you...slut!" Yowsa!)

Not that Bette didnt have any of those qualities. I just found Joan to be more refined:shrug:

amber 06-09-2006 01:38 AM

Wow, those are all the same things I would say about Bette. Except the beauty part. But I wouldn't say that about Joan, either.
Interesting.
I agree with the hint of menace, definitely. Though I wouldn't call it a "hint" so much as "obvious".
I'll go look at youtube.

I think they were both beauties, albeit unconventional. How could anyone not be mesmerised by those Bette Davis Eyes (hehe). What I do like about Bette is that she was never afraid to ugly herself up for a part. With Joan she's always glamourous looking. The only movie I can think of where she doesnt look glam is Strange Cargo

I love that episode too. I also like the "Miami is nice, so I'll say it thrice" episode. my favorite, though, is probably when Dorothy and Blanche get into a fight b/c Dorothy starts working at the museum and Blanche thinks she's getting all the attention.

I am SO Blanche.

is Designing Women out on DVD? Also been looking for The Legend of Lizzie Borden with Elizabeth Montgomery on DVD.

Well there is that hazard with the GG :p

I think the "Miami is nice...I'll say it thrice" is ok - I prefer, however, Sophia's "thanks for the Medicare...for bluecross and blueshield, for the hip that finally healed.."

Ok - LEAST favorite episode? I hate that episode that I think was an attempt at pilot or test for another show - the one with Mr. Fixit and the doctor and wife...HATE that episode.

You know, I always wondered if that was the original concept for Empty Nest - I mean the house is the same, Charlie the wacky neighbor..the man being a doctor. I am also glad they changed the concept because - yeah - that ep sucked big old cow balls.

Oh how I loved Empty Nest though  I had a crush on Barbara :p

Ok - another GG song moment that I love...Dorothy and Sophia as Sonny and Cher - you can't beat it.

Oh - and actually I have changed my favorite episode - I think it's actually the one with Blanche's husband, Sonny Bono and Lyell Wagoner!
