Doesn't the Live in Boston CD suck?
I mentioned this in another thread but felt that it really deserves its own topic. So here's a thread to vent all of your frustrations about how much the CD that came with the Live in Boston DVD sucks.
We can start by taking a nice look at the tracklisting: 1. Eyes of the World 2. Dreams 3. Rhiannon 4. Come 5. Big Love 6. Landslide 7. Silver Springs 8. I'm So Afraid 9. Stand Back 10. Go Your Own Way Am I seeing things or are seven of the ten songs on this CD also featured on The Dance, released just seven years earlier? Am I hearing things, or are six of those seven songs (all but "Rhiannon") presented in arrangements nearly identical to The Dance? Have I gone blind or is only one of the ten songs on this CD from Say You Will, the album this tour was allegedly promoting? Where the hell is "Beautiful Child"? Or "Second Hand News"? Or "What's The World Coming To"? Or "Goodbye Baby"? Or hell, even "Gypsy"? Double you tee eff, people? What on earth is wrong with this band? I mean honestly, what was the logic behind this? Because I'm completely dumbfounded by it. They may as well have left the CD out entirely and saved us a few extra bucks. |
Er...
:( *bites tongue and lets the disc-bashing commence* |
The track listing might suck, but it has the all important "Come" on it and that's all I really care about.
|
i was disappointed by the whole thing actually. They should've filmed the 2nd leg when they were doing "Sara" and other tunes.

At least Mick didn't package the DVD with a coupon for his wine or something like that. Or did he? |

They really could have done something special with the bonus CD -- it's not like any of the casual fans would be buying it for that disc (in fact, with only about 60,000 copies sold, I doubt very many casual fans bought it at all).
The track selection is way too safe, and for absolutely no good reason. Whereas it should have stood apart from 'The Dance,' it ended up being redundant. Restricting my choices to 10 tracks, I would have preferred something along the lines of.... 1. Eyes Of The World 2. Peacekeeper 3. Say You Will 4. Gypsy 5. What's The World Coming To 6. Beautiful Child 7. Gold Dust Woman 8. Come 9. Stand Back 10. Say Goodbye |

I just ripped the audio straight from the DVD and made myself a 2CD set.
The CD that came with the DVDs has yet to leave the box... |

Wow it must've shipped a lot more than actually sold, because it was certified Platinum. |

http://www.riaa.com/gp/certification/criteria.asp Either that, or 100,000 were shipped, and we should all be on the lookout for 40,000 uber-cheap copies in the bargain bins. |

I agree that the LIB CD is a letdown. I hardly ever listen to it b/c there isn't anything special on it really besides EOTW. I ripped the DVD audio a while back, but I haven't re-named the tracks ands stuff yet (right now they are listed as Title 1 and so on). Quote:

Firstly, not a big fan of live CDs... prolly baggage from the old days. My gang of friends were "2 kewl" for live albums. Maybe it was the seemingly contrived roar of the audience or the fact that sequencing always left a bit to be desired. I did buy LIB and played it once or twice. Thought it nice to have a pro shot after watching the boots. By the time all was said and done with the SYW gig, I was ready to put it on a shelf for awhile. Maybe it's time to dig it out again.
My fav live album of all time will always be The Who Live at Leeds. Laura |

I've never done it, as I haven't considered it worth the hassle. |

I couldn't agree with you more & I've said the same thing several times since it was released. Casual fans who bought The Dance 7 years before were not going to buy something so similar. Most of the different songs on the DVD were new SYW tunes that they wouldn't recognize, and some of the older tunes (EOTW, BC) were probably not recognized by the casual fan either. I also agree with whoever mentioned that it should have been filmed later in the tour. True, Red Rover & IKINW aren't known hits, but I really do think that more casual fans may have purchased it if they saw that Sara was on it. The CD was even worse, like you said, only 3 different songs from the Dance. My tracklisting would have been (in no particular order): The Chain Peacekeeper SYW NGBA Come Say Goodbye BC GDW ISA GYOW Don't Stop Goodbye Baby |
Yep, this was just another in a long line of missed opportunities. I couldn't believe they left off Beautiful Child and all of the SYW songs except Come. Ridiculous.
I do wonder who picks the songs that appear on the CD though. I'm not sure how much control the band has on picking the tracks. I remember reading a Lindsey (or maybe Stevie) interview around the release of The Dance. Apparently, the band wanted to leave Rhiannon off The Dance CD and replace it with GDW, but Reprise (or whoever it was) balked, forcing them to put the better known track on it. Does anyone else remember reading this? Another bone headed move - choosing to promote the Live In Boston DVD by playing a video for it on VH1 and picking...Landslide. How original! No, we weren't all sick to death of that song, we really needed yet another version of it. It would have been nice if they had filmed the second leg of the tour, just to have IKINW. And even though they apparently hated it since it was the only song to get dropped twice (!), I'd love to have Destiny Rules on DVD. |

Come to think of it, I wouldn't be a bit surprised if the band didn't even know a CD would be included with the DVD. |

It 's ok. Since I don't own the Dance cd (it was not on sale here), it's nice that I have a few songs live.
However, I would have prefered GDW to Rhiannon and I don't like Come that much anyway. |

Seriously though, that c.d. is a joke. I love Eyes of the World, so I just ripped that particular track onto a comp c.d. but that's all the use I got out of it. Oh, and Stand Back live with F.M. is always killer. But aside from all that  Meh, who needs it? |

I know, I don't understand why they didn't. Especially The Dance - didn't it sell 5 million copies or something? I'll be it would have sold that even if it were a double CD with all songs included. Maybe they figured more people would buy the video for the missing songs? Again, I'm sure that would have sold just fine too. |

I was dissapointed not to see The Chain make it.

It would have been nice if the disc featured songs that haven't been on a half dozen (or so) live albums and compilations:
Eyes of The World Peacekeeper Second Hand News Say You Will Come Gypsy Say Goodbye What's The World Coming To Beautiful Child Gold Dust Woman Stand Back World Turning Goodbye Baby bonus tracks: Sara Red Rover I Know I'm Not Wrong Destiny Rules Running Through The Garden Don't Let Me Down Again |

This may have more to do with GoldWave (which I use to edit my mp3's) as they played fine on my Music MatchJukebox after I ripped them. Any advice on this? Should I bump them up to like 38 or so? They're not that much slower, as it's listenable, but I'd just prefer to make it them same speed is all (I'd liken it to the slow Gypsy on the Best Buy Tour '97 CD). John |
Agree. The cd is a joke. I only listen to SS (only to hear "still, I am a fool) and SB. It seems it was an after thought, or no thought, or for the casual fans again. It doesn't make any sense. I so wish there was a Q & A with Lindsey sometime, we could ask him, "Lindsey, who the f**k picked the track listing for the LIB cd? cause it sucks!

Stand Back is totally worth it, but I always skip through the long ass intro.
Listening to stuff like Dreams or Rhiannon just make me annoyed. I'd be beating a dead horse if I once again mentioned why... or should I say who.. makes me hate those versions. |
What also sucks...
about this release is the packaging. The bonus audio disc was somewhat glued to the inside of the digi-pack, So when I was able to finally remove it (After carefully prying it out of the packaging) I had to remove gum/glue residue from the disc before it was playable.
The bonus audio disc now resides in a soft-sided cd sleeve within the digi-pack of this release (Which I watched only twice...Once to extract the audio portion and another time to put both discs on one DVD, And man was I ever bored silly by the lifeless performance). |
NO. I am listening to the cd right now. :wavey:
