DaVinci Code
Well, anyone planning on seeing it? The critics are panning it. Did anyone read the book?
Edit: Never mind, I just read Tom Hanks Hair thread   |

Ive read the book and I am very interested in the movie.

A group of us from work are going next week. It's part of our "team building" exercises we do whenever there's a Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Matrix or other such type movie out. We've all read the book and saw the reviews. I'll be picking up the super size snack package option at the theater... just to stay awake during the long parts. I almost quit reading the book a few times because I could hardly get thru the first several chapters they were soooo incredibly BORING... too many facts and snippets of information about Opus Dei and blah blah blah. I'm actually looking forward to the movie tho. :D

I know everyone is now knocking it (the book) as being too pedestrian and are probably being overly critical of the movie. Really, it was just a fun read and that's all. What's all this heavy handed Christian debunking of the Code? Helllllooooooo, its categorized as FICTION! Nothing too debunk. Easy fun read translates to easy fun blockbuster and that's all. I'll watch it and happily eat overpriced popcorn while I'm at it.:)
|
I'm gonna see the movie anyway, but I haven't read the book yet. I will read it, but it's never there (in the library) when I want it :( I've asked a friend of mine, but she also never has it, because people are always begging her for the da vinci code. :)

Precisely. Much ado abot nothing. Did you read Angels and Demons too? Same freakin' book. |

Hey, do you have a shot of Whiskey you could send me real quick? Cause that would be great... |

Oh, thank God, the voices of reason - you & Red! :wavey: So true - a book doesn't have to be well written to be enjoyable. |

Which is the point I made in the Tom Hanks hair thread..same book. I really liked Angels and Demons - DaVinci Code less because well, as Amber said, I'd already read it  I think your like of the book may be dependent on the order which they're read. Either way - I didn't dislike DaVinci - but I liked Angels and Demons much more. |

Did you get it? I FedExed you a shot last night..... Meanwhile I polished off a bottle of Gray Monk. Yummy! |
Amazingly(?) enough, there has been some "turmoil" over here (my country and some other places in Europe) because of the film's release.
Some para-religious (if there is such a word) circles tried to prevent it.. |

But David was right to ask about France, because I saw on TV they had some trouble there as well. It was the same 15-16 years ago, when Scorsese's "Last Temptation" was released. Believe it or not, they burned down a movie theatre in the center of the city. |
I've never had any desire whatsoever to read this book, and I doubt I'll see the movie (more the result of me not wanting to sit through an English-language movie dubbed in German than a of total lack of interest in the film), but for some reason, I've been avidly reading a lot of the reviews of it and various articles about it. I found this particular quote from Ron Howard too ridiculous not to share:
“If you’re not willing to take some chances, particularly at this stage of my career, then what are you doing? I know I’ve been commercially successful, but I’m not really a guy looking for safe, middle-of-the-road success.” The guy who just directed a $125 million film produced by Columbia Pictures, based on a bestselling "thriller," and starring Tom Hanks claims he's "not really a guy looking for safe, middle-of-the-road success." No wonder Arrested Development was such a great show. Ron Howard is hilarious. |
I haven't read the book but I might see the movie at some point. Does this book have anything to do with Leonardo Da Vinci?

If you like mysteries, you'll probably like it. It's an easy read, and it is exciting. Also, while you're reading you get really engrossed in the theories - even if they're BS, they seem kind of true while you're reading. I enjoyed it a lot, but a large percentage of the books I read are those throwaway fun mysteries anyway. |

Ok, Thanks for the info, Amber. :) It sounds rather interesting. I'l have to check it out. |

I read the book two years ago and then I just read it again over the past two weeks. Saw the movie tonight and I loved it. The movie mostly follows the book, but there are some differences that I wasn't crazy about. Although I understand why they had to be made (time mostly). I would recommend going to see the movie even if you haven't read the book. I know 2 and 1/2 hours sounds like a long time, but I thought it went by fast.

Loved the book, have picked up "Holy Blood, Holy Grail" as well, found the whole concpet fascinating. Saw the movie today and......well.......I didn't love the movie. I hated how the ended it, and thought the joke at the end was bad. In my opinion they wrapped it all up in a way so as not to offend anyone. The book is far better and far more interesting.

Just saw the movie aned loved it. Yes, it could have moved a little quicker, but that was okay with me. Also, seeing Paris and London made me smile - as I love both!

Totally off-topic and a bit stupid of me to ask but... ??? You live in Germany? |

Cool! An american in Germany (you are american, right:o ).
My dream combination! |

Sorry for being indiscreet (sp?) but I was wondering where you live exactly.
You said that you don't feel like watching an american movie dubbed in german.. I lived in Hannover for a while and there used to be a movie theater where they showed movies in english (without german subtitles I think). I found the whole dubbing thing horrible, and while I see the point, I think it totally destroys the film. Fortunately we get the ordinary subtitle-system over here. |

How did I not know this? :o |
I saw this movie while in NYC, which was an experience in itself. after reading the book and loving every single moment of it, this movie was a let down. it was so slow-moving, to me...it built up and built up, but never really got there.
it was pretty cool to see all the protestors in front of the theater. I wanted to moon them and have something written on my ass, but decided not to. |

I agree, the pacing was plodding. But, I thought it was overall a good movie - not great - but good. |

And - L'hotel Ritz en Paris - Le Sigh! |

Teabing stole every scene he was in - and that is hard to do with Hanks in the room. Also, did you notice the water faucet at the Ritz when he was shaving at the end - it was a dolphin - which is fab. IMO. |

LOL - usually!!!!!! That Ritz needs its teeth brushed though. The coolest thing there is the pool because it has music piped in underwater - so you can listen while submerged  Actually, IMO the George V, a Four Seasons property, is the best hotel in Paris - though the location of the Ritz is fab. for shopping!!!!!!! Interestingly, Paris has so many wonderful hotels that are not as pricey. SIGHES - I was there last time a year ago on my may to Hong Kong. I had a day only., but what a day I made of it!!!!!! |
I saw the movie yesterday and enjoyed it. As strand said, a good movie, not a great one. I read the book a while back and was totally enthralled with it, so I have to say I enjoyed the book more. Still it was not a bad way to spend a Sunday afternoon.
