McCartney and wife to separate

http://www.cnn.com/2006/SHOWBIZ/05/1...lit/index.html

LONDON, England (CNN) -- Former Beatle Paul McCartney and his wife, Heather Mills McCartney, have announced that they are separating after four years of marriage.

A joint statement issued on behalf of the couple Wednesday, blamed media attention for the split,

"Having tried exceptionally hard to make our relationship work given the daily pressures surrounding us, it is with sadness that we have decided to go our separate ways," it said.

"Our parting is amicable and both of us still care about each other very much but have found it increasingly difficult to maintain a normal relationship with constant intrusion into our private lives, and we have actively tried to protect the privacy of our child," the joint statement said.

The couple have a two-year-old daughter, Beatrice Milly.

"Separation for any couple is difficult enough, but to have to go through this so publicly, especially with a small daughter, is immensely stressful.

"We hope, for the sake of our baby daughter, that we will be given some space and time to get through this difficult period."

McCartney, 63, and anti-landmines campaigner Mills, 38, married in 2002, four years after the pop legend's first wife Linda died from cancer.

McCartney, who was knighted by the British queen in 1997, is one of the world's richest rock stars, with a personal fortune put at $1.4 billion in 2004.

The Liverpool-born musician and songwriter made his name with the Beatles, alongside John Lennon, Ringo Starr and George Harrison, penning classics such as "Yesterday," "Hey Jude" and "The Long and Winding Road."

His 1969 marriage to his first wife, photographer Linda Eastman, was seen as one of the most successful in show business. The couple performed together in the band "Wings" and famously spent only a handful of days apart.

He married Mills, a former model who had her left leg amputated below the knee after she was hit by a motorcycle in 1993, in a lavish ceremony at an Irish castle.

McCartney's second marriage is widely reported to have caused friction with his children from his first marriage, who include fashion designer daughter Stella.

I am surprised. After losing Linda, I was happy Paul had found a woman to share his life with. I guess they weren't right for eachother afterall.

So do you, but Blair stayed with you.

This makes me sad for Paul. He was my first love, from waaaaaay back when I was a wee child. He was probably too nice for her. I so hoped they would live happily ever after.

Thats because I'm great in the sack, he just puts a paper bag over my head :p

I said from the beginning that it was too soon after Linda's passing.

I recall an interview from somebody close to the McCartney/Beatle camp (Ringo maybe?) saying that the 2nd Mrs. McCartney was "the coldest person I've ever met".

Well, at least this'll give Paul's muse about 30 or 40 songs. ;) Expect an album & tour shortly.

I don't think 4 years is too soon. Life is short. You can't sit around being all sad and all and not live your life and love again. What might be too soon for somebody, might be not soon enough for someone else. Everyone's different.

Totally. I mean, I don't even like to wait until I'm done with one to get another.

That is sad, though. Strange that he'd pick someone cold...

True. But, considering how deeply he felt for Linda, it just seemed like it was a dishonor to her memory. But, you're right, that's me putting my own scruples onto it.
'
It was 4 until they married, they'd been "inseparable" for 2 years prior to that.

I feel very sorry for Paul, because divorce is never easy. Even if, it is the best thing. I'm kind of glad though, because I think Paul will be better off without her. I never got a warm, positive feeling from Heather Mills. I didn't think it would last from the start: the age difference, his children don't really care for her, he didn't seem over the grieving of Linda's death(still wearing the wedding ring/singing songs dedicated to her in concert, etc.), and Heather seemed to be very controling of Paul. I think that they will be better off apart. Of course, this is just my two cents worth.

Johnny Stew 05-17-2006 02:09 PM

Heather always struck me as a total C U Next Tuesday, and not at all right for Paul, who's exceedingly warm and gracious. So I can't help but think that somewhere up there in Heaven, Linda is smiling.

Totally and completely agree.

Linda and Paul had something truly special -and I was very skeezed out when he shacked up with HEather so soon after Linda's death.

I have never liked Heather.

AND furthermore...I don't think he's put out a truly great, rocking and strong album since Flaming Pie...I think his true muse is gone.

Her blaming the press is ridiculous. Who did she think she was marrying?

Oh, I disagree...Run Devil Run was really good. I loved Driving Rain. Chaos.. is an acquired taste, but once I got into it, I think it is as good as anything he's done post-Beatles.

A means to take a few steps up the social ladder and promote (and, lets face it, FINANCE) her "causes".

Ok, anybody feel like sharing some of the really tasteless (but funnier than hell) puns going around already?

I wish he'd play Pittsburgh again so I can get tickets for my mother. She's been a fan since the Beatles played Ed Sullivan (even though she's... *cough*... only 29! ;) ), but she's only had a chance to see Paulie in concert once, during the 'Flowers In The Dirt' tour.

Doesn't count as a pun, but I've always enjoyed that "One-Legged Girl" song, to the tune of "Bungalow Bill."

chiliD 05-17-2006 05:11 PM

I can't remember exactly how one of 'em was worded, but something like:

Heather was going to sue for divorce, but she didn't have a leg to stand on.

MacMan 05-17-2006 05:19 PM

It's all about the baby seals!!!!!!

DavidMn 05-17-2006 05:24 PM

Well, if he wasnt happy, then this was probably the right thing to do. I'm not too worried about her though. It's not like she's gonna be living check to check.

I still bet James, Stella & Linda's daughter Heather, are still wanting to "off" her.

Nico 05-17-2006 08:50 PM

I'm really just sorry for the little child. I love Paul. I am a huge Beatles fan and Paul has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. However, I have always been the biggest Linda fan. She was an exceptional woman, and I wasn't all that crazy about Paul hooking up with Ms. Mills so soon after Linda's death. I didn't think anything bad about Paul. People are entitled to be happy and unlonely, but I just never could warm to her. And I don't know her. She just seemed so out of touch with the sentimentality and warmth that the Beatles protruded, even after they disbanded.

And to top that off, Linda and Paul had a beautiful marriage and love. It's like John/Yoko and Paul/Linda just belonged together. It was hard to accept another person taking Linda's place because, imo, no one could fill her shoes in Paul's life.

I know Stella wasn't crazy about Heather, either. I wish them all well. I hope Paul can fill whatever void he feels with his little daughter. :)

BTFLCHLD 05-17-2006 09:12 PM

Paul married her for a reason. I couldn't say I don't care for Heather as I do not know her. Paul seemed happy, and he did enough press at the time to assure us that he was! Yes, I know, love dies. Maybe she decided to leave him? Joint statements are funny like that. Maybe they came to some sort of agreement? Who would want to believe someone actually left Paul McCartney!!?

I hope they both find happiness. I am sure they will do everything they can to take care of their child. Paul and Linda raised their children well. I do miss Linda. Does Heather have any children from a previous marriage?

No, I recall reading that she had doubts as to whether she could even have a child to begin with.

Wow. They must have been really happy when she became pregnant. I would imagine this isn't what they both had planned on. From their statement, it seems they did everything they could to try to save it. Bummer.

I think Heather was in it for the money and/or fame. Poor Paul. I just don't understand why he picked someone who sort of resembled his first wife, Linda:confused: It was way too soon after her death. He and Linda were married a long, long time. Hard to replace a wife who he really seemed to be devoted to since the late 60's.

She's obviously very controlling... that beyoch. How dare she do that to a Beatle. She's probably very insecure. You would think she would have found a way to rise to the occassion and feel blessed by being with such a talented and gifted human being. Oh well, some people wouldn't know a diamond if they held it in their hand... the things they think are useless... oh, oops... slipped into old song mode.;)

I was inappropriately upset when Linda died, I think. I don't usually care about celebs that way, since I don't know them, but for some reason her death upset me terribly. A lot of it had to do with the genuine love she and Paul seemed to have. And like many, I felt kind of yucky about his second marriage, even though four years is certainly a suitable amount of time. I guess  . I don't understand the lack of privacy statement, though. Hello, you married a BEATLE. Anyway, I still cry when I hear Paul sing Maybe I'm Amazed, or something like that live, because I know it's about HER and not that young wannabe. Heh.

jannieC 05-18-2006 11:29 AM

Oh yeah, and I wanted to add that I remember reading an interview with Paul where he said that Linda would porbably NOT have approved of his second marriage. You know how people always say they want their loved one to find someone else after their gone, well apparently LInda was like, uh no! Funny. Anyone remember that or am I hallucinating?

I agree Jannie. I was weirdly upset when Linda died too. Their relationship was such an inspiration, they only spent a handful of nights apart in over 20 years--that is amazing. I couldn't believe it when Paul married so soon after Linda's death, I thought that was a betrayal of her memory on his part and couldn't believe that he found someone to "replace her" that quickly. I know he knows that Linda could never be "replaced" but still, that's what it seemed like to me. Anyway, I hope Paul finds true love again with someone, obviously this broad wasn't it, but hopefully someone will come along again for him.

Patti 05-18-2006 11:48 AM

I would be happy to volunteer for the job, even if he is almost 64!

Sounds like we're different types of Macca fans. Run Devil Run I thought was ok...I never could fully get into Driving Rain, and I did think that Chaos was the best since Flaming Pie. Not that I think ANY of Paul's stuff is bad..I guess I enjoy more gushy sentimental Paul to rocking Paul :p
