Least favourite album?

Amber's comment in the TISL thread got me wondering: What is everyone's least favorite Stevie album, and why? Is it the production, the music, the songwriting, her voice? One specific song that you just can't stand? Her hair looks goofy on the cover?

Take off the kid gloves! You know there's one that you just can't stand!

amber 05-06-2006 03:57 PM

For goofiest ugliest cover I would pick Timespace. But I like Timespace, for obvious reasons.
TISL - voice way too limited. Still some good songs, though. Love the beginning addition on Planets.
Wild Heart used to be my least favorite album, but suddenly I liked more of it. Now I like it all pretty well except Gate and Garden. Sable on Blond is still questionable, but I recently found some subtle redeeming qualities. The thing about Wild Heart is, it's a vocal tour de force. Her voice had gained extra color, and lost a bit of it's range - but for me that worked for the better, as she still had quite a range.
I have to say, though, I like about the same number of songs on all her albums.

trackaghost 05-06-2006 04:03 PM

I don't mean to start the Street Angel hate, because there are good things about that album, but her voice, choice of songs AND the cover art are easily her most uninspired.
The worst thing about it for me is her cover of Just Like A Woman. I'll never understand how she got got Bob Dylan to play on that. I mean he must have heard it.
Unconditonal Love is also one of her worst song choices ever, thankfully she didn't write it (the blame falls on Sandy Stewart at her most sickly sweet). "The one condition of love, is that there are none at all" apparently.

I would say Street Angel.
Hate the cover. Songs are pretty uninspired. Voice is not great.
Obviously a low point in her career. Close second is OSOTM for
the same reasons.

Ouch! Shot through the heart, and you're to blame!
I really like JLAW. Actually, though, I think I may have been shocked when I first heard it, as well. :p I like that the lyrics sound appropriate for Stevie. But also, I remember being embarrassed that she switches to first person. It's like, yes, the lyrics may reflect you, Stevie, but it seems crass and overbearing and self absorbed to actually switch it to the first person.
Oh, and Track - the name is "maybe unconditional love will change your mind".

Do not attempt to understand the Bob. This is the guy who decided to dedicate his face along with one of his darkest blues numbers to a Victoria's Secret commercial, and who now plays LL Cool J songs on his "Theme Time Radio Hour."

I actually like the cover of Street Angel, Stevie's got a real understated sexiness on it. Way better than the utter silliness that was her previous few album covers.

Hawkeye 05-06-2006 04:15 PM

Rock a Little Hands Down. Awful album from the wonderful Stevie Nicks. None of her other albums approach being as bad as this one. The much maligned Street Angel while not my all time favorite like Curtis, is still very good in my opinion. Although none of her albums unfortunutly ever matched the greatness of Bella Donna and Wild Heart, unless you count Enchanted Disk 3.

Yay, I'm glad someone at least said that. I agree.

Trackie, trackie, trackie - those two are sooooo far from being her worst released tracks. C'mon. C'MON!!! ;) :xoxo:
You are clearly suffering from a state of "cover bias". :p Understandable, considering who the coverees are (brilliant), but biased nonetheless.
Also, about Bob. Musician is his job, maybe he needs to make money from it?

Worst ever released are Docklands - Greta - Cry Wolf - Fire Burnin'

I don't think the Bobster needs any money but he is an old pal of Stevie's so I guess that explains it.

What do you think Stevie's most terrible recordings are then? (Officially released that is). Love's A Hard Game To Play? Desert Angel? That Made Me Stronger?

Yes, Desert Angel is one. Maybe Unconditional Love Will Change Your Mind. TMMS. A couple others on OSOTM. I think one or two more on TISL...er, Candlebright, Every Day.
Wait, I wasn't talking about Bob doing Stevie's thing for money, I was talking about the advertisers having his songs. For money. why else would he let adverts use his songs? Unless he didn't have the rights?
Fire Burning and Cry Wolf are two of my faves from OSOTM. My first fave is Long Way to Go.

I think the only ad he's let his music be used on was Victoria's Secret, and from what I understand, he said a while back, he'd only do an ad if it was for Victoria's Secret. And they took him up on it. I don't think it was a money thing, rather a gorgeous-models-in-their-underwear kind of thing.

That would be the one. Oddly enough, it's just about a perfect melding of shlock form (you could grow weeds to that tempo, & get a load of that luscious interplay between zonked lead vocal & zonked lead guitar) & shlock content ("wake up, my sweet darling/there's something I've got to say to you tonight" or "love's a hard game to play/no matter what they say). That makes it pure shlock art.

Even a Mae West impersonator wouldn't do that one. But. Stevie. Did. :distress: The "managers" who told her she needed to record such a monstrosity--or else she'd "never have a career again"--couldn't possibly have believed it. So what, one wonders, was their motive? It had to have been nefarious. They actually *did* want to destroy her & any vestiges of her former wondrousness. The Devil himself couldn't have picked a more efficient method.

"Love's a Hard Game to Play" is Stevie's actual Fall From Grace.

Sahara 05-06-2006 05:14 PM

Least favourite? And people are gonna hate me for this. Bella Donna. That's ridiculous, I know, but it's true. Some absolutely stellar tracks -- Edge of Seventeen, Outside the Rain, and SDMHA has grown on me -- but the rest is pretty uninteresting. I mean, it's nice, it's easy, but it has little of the fire that her other albums have. If that makes sense. And The Highwayman? Don't get me started on The Highwayman. :( :sorry:

: ducks for cover :

Now a word in defense of Street Angel -- I love the cover. Understated sexiness indeed. Sure, there are some dreadful songs. Basically most of the second half. But in there are some real, underrated gems. Docklands? Why does everyone hate Docklands?
Unconditional Love ... I shudder to think.

And may I ask -- what is it with Desert Angel that people don't like? That song made me cry. It's so poignant and so painfully relevant. Not to mention it sounds terrific.

I don't hate DA! I like it a lot. It's not my favourite or anything, but it's not as terrible as people make it out to be.

I think the Street Angel cover is sexy, too... All wide-eyed and whatnot. Me likes.

Johnny Stew 05-06-2006 05:55 PM

For me, it's 'The Other Side Of The Mirror.' And it's not that I hate it... I'm just not fond of the antiseptic production.

Bob Dylan has released 40-something albums, and he's one of the most-covered songwriters on the planet, plus he tours constantly, so he's not in need of any cash. He's just Bob Dylan. There's no answer. Why is Bob Dylan in this Victoria's Secret commercial walking around some vaguely Italian landscape? Who knows, dude, he's Bob Dylan, he can do whatever he wants. The rules do not apply.

It's almost a cliche at this point to say Street Angel, so my choice is Rock A Little. This album is a complete mess for me. I like "If I Were You," No Spoken Word," and "Has Anyone...", and that's pretty much it. "The Nightmare" is aptly titled. This is among her worst songs ever. "Imperial Hotel?" No, thanks. "I Sing for the Things" has some nice moments lyrically, but, musically, it is banal. Vocally, she was at a low point on this record. I can't stand that helium voice on "Talk to Me." And that album cover. :distress:

The funny thing is, it was that voice that caught my attention, and it's that voice that I miss.

SapphireSister 05-06-2006 07:52 PM

Street Angel simply for the fact that it has the least amount of songs I adore. I only love 3 - Kick It, Street Angel, and Docklands (love the music, lyrics whatever). Blue Denim is pretty good but the others are completely uninspired, mediocre songs.
*Unconditional Love demo kicks ass!
Bella Donna is my second least favorite for the same reason, least amount of songs I love. BD only has 3 of my favorites, Bella Donna, How Still my Love, and Edge. It all comes down to what album has the most songs I like or dislike.

I had a similar reaction when I first heard Talk to Me on the radio, how nasal it sounded. Coke is the worst drug for a vocalist. Whitney Houston, sadly, is experiencing a similar change with her voice.

YOU are EVIL :p
and no, i do not love the whole album BUT you want a bad album....
Stevie's worst album is TISL :sorry: but it is.

I think each record has a handful of bad songs

Bella Donna
SDMHA
The Highway Man
Leather & Lace

The Wild Heart
If Anyone Falls
Nightbird
Gate & Garden

Rock A Little ---> tied 2nd best album cover
I Sing for the Things
HAEWAFY
If I Were You

TOSOTM ----> BEST album cover of aaaaall Stevie albums
I Still Miss Someone
Fire Burning {depends on the mood}

*not counting TS*

Street Angel ----> tied 2nd best abum cover
Unconditional Love
Greta {only coz the RAL version is better}

*not counting Enchanted, as it is perfection, minus the aforementioned songs}

and then there's

Trouble in Shangri-La
Love Changes
It's Only Love
Too Far From Texas
That Made Me Stronger

and

Candlebright
Sorcerer

for their over production and *additional* vocals

sorry but that's what i think

Street Angel is my least favourite Stevie album - not to say it is awful, but 'worse' than the other albums.

The song 'Street Angel' itself is nothing short of brilliant, 'Maybe Love' 'Unconditional Love' 'Greta' 'Blue Denim' 'Kick It' and a few others are cool - but over-all the album is blah.

I don't think it is so much the pictures that are awful on SA - its the DESIGN that looks like it was made on microsoft publisher 1995 that is appauling :sorry:

But if Street Angel is as bad as Stevie is going to get, then we are lucky she hasn't really been all that bad at all...

Didn't Dave LaChapple take the photos? There is no way with Dave on board that you could ever have a bad photo...

My least favorite album is OSOTM, although there are highlights (Rooms on Fire, Ooh My Love). Her voice here is not that bad. She still shows some emotion and strength and hasn't yet slipped into the "Klonopin Monotone" of Street Angel. My problem with this album is the production and sluggishness of the songs. She never rocks out. It's all keyboards, with the occasional guitar here and there. I think it works on some songs but Rupert Hine really should have displayed a little more variety in his production. I just don't care for the overall sound. But I do love the cover :p

Why is "That Made Me Stronger" so disliked?? I'm just curious, because I've read this many times on the list. IMHO, I love this song, and I also think it's one of the best collaborations I've ever heard from Stevie. It's one of my favorites from TISL. So what does everyone not like about it?

As for the worst album, for me it's a tie between Rock A Little (because of the production, not the songs) and The Other Side Of The Mirror; again, not because of the songs, because of the "production and arrangement by Rupert Hine"; as I've said before, I think of TOSOTM as "The Rupert Hine Show with Special Guest Stevie Nicks".

The verses I think are not too bad, the music/arrangement/production... ehh, okay. But good lord, the chorus. I can't think of anything more horribly awkward in Stevie's entire oeuvre. The melody of it is just kind of goofy, and the lyrics are so horribly obvious and awkwardly constructed and "that made me hold on to me" and ugh, make it stop.
