Like or Dislike: I Still Miss Someone

I like Johnny Cash's version better. I think I've heard that this song's been remade by a few other artists - anyone know who off hand?

I don't really dislike Stevie's take on it. I don't think it's bad - but I think it could have been so much better. For one thing, I think I would have preferred a simpler, more stark ballad with a softer, vulnerable vocal. The music in this one is too...I don't know...electronic? Robotic? I don't feel anything when I hear it. That silly carnival organ - ugh. Way too much organ (well, fake organ I assume.) I can hardly hear anything else. Except for the tambo or whatever the hell that's supposed to be. Hard to tell, since the only reference to percussion is Rupert & his "programmed drums." There's a nice bass line in there, but it's covered up by layers of crap. And good job whistling, Kelly Johnston. Yes, thanks for that.

Now. The vocal. I ordinarily adore Stevie belting it out, I do. But not here. It's almost as if she's yelling, trying too hard to convey that she's upset about this relationship ending. She didn't need to do that, the words communicate that very well. I think a softer vocal would have worked better. JMO.

I do love the way she sings "baby, when all the love was there." Love it.

Live? I'm not upset that she's never done it live, and it's not one I'd care to see her perform to be honest.

So, did she pick this song because she'd always liked it? Did she pick it for the blue eyes reference, and if so - for Lindsey, or someone else? Did someone say "hey, you should put a cover on this album, how about a Johnny Cash tune?" Thoughts?

heyjupiter678 05-01-2006 12:55 PM

I voted for the next to last choice, but the more I think about it, I should've went with the last one. It's a really horrible version that doesn't do the song justice at all, imo.

Johnny's version is great, but I like Dolly Parton's the best. :)

JazmenFlowers 05-01-2006 12:57 PM

I'd give it a 5 out of 10.

Jyqm 05-01-2006 01:55 PM

Paula, you need to start doing these threads for some good songs...

I think I posted a bit about this track in another thread, but I think one of your comments really sums it up perfectly: "I don't feel anything when I listen to it." It is indeed a very robotic performance. Stevie just seems to bleat out the words without taking even a moment to consider what exactly she's singing, and of course the music doesn't help things. "Robotic" is a very good adjective. I'll add "monochromatic" - nuanced, this track is not.

I think I also mentioned in another thread how dread... ful... ly... slow... this track is. It just drags and drags. This is not a song that requires four whole minutes to get through.

As far as why she chose to cover this song, I really have no idea. She's never mentioned Johnny Cash in any interviews as far as I know, although we know she grew up listening to country music, and this song would have been a hit around the time she was in her "tween" years. Perhaps it was a favorite of hers as a kid, or a favorite of her grandfather's.

strandinthewind 05-01-2006 02:18 PM

^^^^

I think she recorded it because she was singing about LB - at least she said so in some interview, if I remember it correctly.

DavidMn 05-01-2006 02:25 PM

Not a favorite of mine.

Johnny Stew 05-01-2006 02:36 PM

I think the production is pretty dreadful, but, God help me, I love that vocal. Sure, she probably could have sung it much better about five years prior to when this was recorded, but I still think she put a lot of emotion and heart into the song.

But then I think we've already established that I usually hear things differently than most people!

Actually, I think it's more fun to discuss the "red-headed step-children" of Stevie's catalog. I mean, what's left to be said about "Silver Springs" that hasn't already been said? It's more interesting to talk about "Kick It" and "One More Big Time Rock And Roll Star," and the like.

So bring on "Whole Lotta Trouble"!

David 05-01-2006 04:22 PM

Well.....I can't say I really enjoy this track very much....but since I never play this CD, it isn't much of a problem...

....kinda like the the sticky, muggy, tropical weather in Indonesia....I hate the weather over there....but since I don't live there, it doesn't bother me much if at all.

I like both of those a lot more than "I Still Miss Someone" and "Alice"!

I think there was a OMBTRARS (now that's an acronym) thread not too long ago. I remember my comments were that it's really a pretty good song up until that confounded bridge. ooooOOOOUNDAHCOVAHHHHHHHHH!!!

johnny, wouldn't it be weird if you discovered that there were no other people & that the way you heard stuff was the only way that anybody heard anything because there was no anybody & it was only you, hearing stuff in your way, which was the only way?

Hmm, maybe I'm like the autistic son from St. Elsewhere, and you're all fabrications of my mind. That might explain the photo of Jason in the Superman costume.

I got that idea from "The Mysterious Stranger" by Mark Twain.

It's time for a new sig banner for me, Stew. I'm tired of this one.

Hey now!!!!!!!

I thought you had forgotten all about me

goldie 05-01-2006 06:25 PM

There's something for me somewhere in this song.

I only like it because I imagine it is for Linsdsey with the blue eyes and all. Other than that, I don't really care for it too much!

SapphireSister 05-01-2006 07:02 PM

The worst of the worst, reminds me of a being at the circus on a bad LSD trip (not that I've been to the circus on LSD but you get my point). I've never heard the original and from the sound of this I never want to although anything must be better than this version. It's not her voice that's so horrific, it's the music and production. A bottom 5 Stevie song.

BlackWidow 05-01-2006 07:06 PM

Her best Vocal on OSOTM!!!!

Glittermoondust 05-01-2006 10:01 PM

I guess I'm one of the only ones that actually likes this song.........

foxyluva 05-01-2006 10:21 PM

I may be a minority here - but I love this song. The clowny music sometimes annoys me, but I still love it

TheBlueLamp 05-02-2006 12:46 AM

It took a while for this song to grow on me. I used to hate the circus type music but it doesn't bother me anymore. Now I love the song, although reading here that it may have been about Lindsey makes me roll my eyes. I'm so sick of Stevie's obsession with him.

I do think that the last line "Baby when all the love...was there" is the best final lyric on any of Stevie's albums. I can just imagine her taking a bow (or curtsy) as she finishes singing it.

You know we've got problems when the sheer awfulness of Stevie's cover is turning people off to Johnny Cash.

This isn't the original studio version, but here's "I Still Miss Someone" from Folsom Prison:

Simple. Direct. Powerful. Ninety seconds.

It is not about Stevie's obsession with Lindsey.

You are aware -- yes? -- that Johnny Cash & his wife wrote the song in the 1950s?

http://www.toptown.com/hp/66/istill.htm

One has a hunch, reading this thread, that quite a few fans think Stevie wrote this thing.

Yes, I know who wrote it. I guess I'm just sick of Stevie's "obsession" with Lindsey. Whether she actually is obsessed is debatable but the suggestion that she's singing Johnny Cash's song to or about Lindsey just seemed ridiculous to me.

Although it's interesting to note that Stevie added the parenthetical title of "Blue Eyes" to her cover. Whether or not "Blue Eyes" is a nod to Lindsey is also debatable, but it's an image she seems to use quite a bit, and it likely is tied to a specific person in her mind.

If the specific person referred to in all those songs is Lindsey, I find it rather tiresome. I still love this song and songs like Blue Denim which features the "blue/grey eyes" but for god's sake! If she wasn't famous she'd be in an institution! To be writing and singing of the same person all those years later is crazy. Much as I love Stevie, I can't stand that side of her.

SillyDreamer 05-02-2006 11:19 AM

Stevie's is pretty middle-of-the-road. Love Linda's, though, and I think there was a video on youtube of Johnny and Joni singing it together that was lovely.

I think it'd have to be one awesome cover for Stevie to turn most people, who post here, on to Johnny Cash. Hell, I'd say most people on here don't even like country music, much less "Johnny Cash country".

I don't think this version is all that bad. I voted for there's something out there somewhere in this song. It's one of those songs I have to be in the mood for to really enjoy.

Funny -- I've never given a flying fig what anyone thinks of my musical tastes. Even in high school when it was oh-so-uncool to follow Stevie Nicks & Fleetwood Mac, and I was the lone guy who did, I wore that distinction proudly. It was one of the few things about myself in which I had confidence!

So I guess it strikes me as somewhat silly when other people get bent out of shape about that kind of stuff.

Well, there have been a few folks who gave off the "if you actually like such & such song, you must be an idiot" vibe in their posts, or just blatantly said it... and I can see why people would get offended there. But I tend to think that if you like a song -- yours is the only opinion that matters.

Notice how I always couch my insults in vagueries & generalities? "The fans" or "people I know" or "people" &c.

NEVER name specifically another ledgie & lob an insult (although I'd like to). Oddly enough, I get named & insulted here all the time. Lucky for those people, I have thicker skin (like a longneck clam from Pismo Beach).
