Neil Young's Living With War

For those interested, as of today, Neil Young's much-talked-about Living With War album is now streaming on neilyoung.com, as well as a few other places. You might experience some connection problems, though, as it seems the whole Internet is listening to this album today.

For those who don't know: Neil recorded this album in the span of just three days earlier this month. Neil's on guitar and vocals, of course. The rest of the band is just drums, bass and trumpet. And a 100-person choir. Neil calls it "metal folk protest." It'll be available for download through iTunes and other sources next week, I think, with an actual CD in stores as quickly as they can be manufactured, hopefully by mid-May.

This is a protest record of the highest order. Neil's not pulling any punches. I've only heard the first three songs (again, half the world seems to be trying to listen to this album today), but they're pretty phenomenal. Neil & Co. are rocking the f*** out and taking no prisoners. Listen up, George. Nobody's buying your bull**** anymore.

Awesome, thanks for the heads up. Your post gave me chills...I can only imagine the degree of scathingness that's in these songs. So I guess no members of Crazy Horse are playing on this if Neil's the only one on guitar  I wish he'd put out an album like this with them, talk about rocking the f*ck out.

Scathing is about the best adjective I can think of. There's some real vitriol here. Although also a real feeling of empowerment (a 100 person choir helps to get that across...), a feeling that we can change this if we all stand up and demand to be heard.

Unfortunately, no Crazy Horse on this album. The band is Chad Cromwell (drums), Rick Rosas (bass) and Tommy Brea (trumpet). I don't know if Crazy Horse could rock this much harder, though.

Also, unfortunately, it really is very difficult to listen to the album right now, at least for me. Probably to wait until late at night or early in the morning when traffic is a bit lower.

This is great, good for Neil. I just find it funny that it's a Canadian artist (whom I love by the way) that is protesting the war.

I've been trying to get on his site for hours now with no luck. I keep getting a "too busy" message. Glad to hear that it's pretty fantastic, Jyqm.

Who says protest music is a thing of the past? Thanks for the reminder. I'm going to head over there now and check it out.

You can also try http://www.myspace.com/neilyoung or http://www.hyfntrak.com/neilyoung2/AFF23130/ although I've had even less luck with those. I'll probably just wait until tomorrow morning, when America's asleep.

He gave a fantastic interview on CNN where he talked about how he lives here, came here to make it in the music biz and he pays taxes here. So he really takes it to heart.

estranged4life 04-28-2006 11:46 AM

Good for Neil...

but metal musicians have been ripping on this War for much longer, and without as much hype or press coverage (ie-Megadeth's lead track "Blackmail the Universe" on their latest album "The System Has Failed"-Trust me, the very beginning of this track would make for an interesting day of media coverage if it were to become reality.)

"Blackmail The Universe"
Music & Lyrics - Mustaine

"This is breaking news
It appears that Air Force One was shot down
Somewhere over the Middle East this morning
By a sleeper cell of rogue terrorists, firing a Stinger Missile
The Pilot and all passengers are unaccounted for
The President's whereabouts are presently unknown
And he is presumed missing
The Vice President, Secretary of State,
And principals of the military are assembling
Our nation stands at DEFCON 3

The greatest crisis, will someone come for me?
I “red, white and blew it”
Unleashed revenge, my body is detained
How could anybody do this?
Betrayal, I peel away the days
Medals are useless, Uncle Sam's forgotten me
I'm not important, no one will ever come
I'll never be found, God get me out of this hell

Nuclear battlefields energized
Cold wars are heating up again
The tensions mounting
People lift up your fists in revenge

The stage is set
Who will be the first to blink?
We can't go to war
Remember that “Vietnam thing”
Peace at any price
With a gun to your head, bang, bang
Weakness runs in your family
What runs in mine is death

This is your 5 minute warning
Burn all your classified documents
And if cooler heads don't prevail
First strike from a political dead man

Appeasement only makes the aggressor more aggressive
He understands only one language – action!
And he respects only one word – force!
No sign of them stopping, no time for back channel communiqués
We need all the help we can get, air strikes and invasions!
Retaliate, I say!

The will of good men can not counter the terrible strain of war

Blackmail the Universe with the greatest of calamities
Awaken those sleeping giants in the dust of the ground
With their skin destroyed, unjust to innocence
Lawful possessor of the world's last 24 hours

Terror and ugliness reveal what death really means
And in hatred you see men as they really are
If chosen over heaven, Earth will have been for them
All along, only another region of hell"

I just hope we dont see songs/albums anytime soon attacking the troops...Attack the system/government to yer hearts intent is fine in my books.

Thanks! Neither of them worked for me, but here's a torrent of the audio that someone ripped from the stream if you can download it.

Lindsey......that's how it's done

One of the songs was played on NPR's All Songs Considered. It was great: raw, real & direct.
I haven't been able to stream it either, but I noticed on the blog connected with the record that he is encouraging people to stream the music on their own websites, so it should be available in many places, very quickly.

Atrocities are atrocities no matter whether your country of birth or citizenship is involved. Apathy towards matters that don't involve our own nations would leave the world in a pretty dire state, actually that sums up a lot of history unfortunately.

No kidding. That's not what I meant. I'm saying why aren't the American born artists stepping up to the plate?

I know the country artists are spineless (hense, Dixie Chicks fans turning on them) but the rock artist's must have some balls?

estranged4life 04-28-2006 02:39 PM

have balls (ie-God Forbid-Check out their latest album "God Forbid IV: Constitution of Treason", Very political and very negative towards the US involvement in the war overseas) but since metal has been deemed "lame" by those blind minions at Empty-Vee (Among others) you dont see/hear it as much on the air.

As of late, I couldnt tell ya anything about "country" artists...I recently quit listening to about 97% of all country music. I do know that most country acts are "Bush Ballhangers & Nutswingers" and they know if they let their opinion be public against the War, they could be facing a loss of their fan base.

As for "pop stars", They are too busy trying to be "rock stars"...The instant kind, Kinda like "Instant Potatoes"-Just add water (Or in their case "popularity") and mix...There ya go, the next flavor-for-the-weak!!! Any opinion against the War would mean no $$$$ for these money-grubbing-glory-seekers & their leech-handlers.

Sometimes I forget that he's Canadian  He's always been so outspoken about American politics and in my mind does Americana (in his music) better than most American artists! I love him, I'll have to wait until I get home to listen to this new album. Dammit!

......and this is why I'm wondering why he does this, because he's not a true American, so he doesn't really care about the backlash?

CSNY is touring this summer, in case y'all didn't already know. ;)

CSNY Speak Out
Updated 10:22 PDT Tue, Apr 25 2006

Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young take to the road this summer on their first tour since 2002.
The two-month-plus trek crosses North America starting July 6 in Philadelphia and running through mid-September, visiting more than 30 major cities nationwide. Additional dates are still being confirmed.
Shows will go on sale beginning this weekend in Detroit, Washington, Seattle, Portland, Concord, Holmdel, Wantagh, and Winnipeg, with additional on-sale announcements following in the next few weeks.
Tickets will range from $35 - $125, with a limited number of gold circle tickets available.
Billed as "An Evening With Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young," Freedom of Speech '06 will spotlight an extended set from CSNY. Repertoire will include their classic work together, as well as favorites from their individual careers.
Music from Neil Young's forthcoming album, Living With War, will make its concert debut during the tour.
All four members of the band "believe that in light of the current environment, it's time for them to be out on the road fighting for America, and for people's rights to stand and be counted."
During an interview with CNN last week, Young said, "There's a conscience in the country, and I don't think it's being spoken. Everyone deserves a chance to be heard... We don't have to believe what our president believes to be patriotic."

Just a couple of years back CSN played locally at Frontier City, Ticket prices were a flat $25.00...Why the sudden jump?

Brian "Man, they sure are fighting for the people's right to cough up their $$$$ to see 'em when some folkz cannot afford the $$$$ for the current gasoline price hikes" j.

I think he considers himself as much American as Canadian at this point. As gldstwmn pointed out, he's lived in the U.S. for a really long time. He's put down roots here so I think he cares about this country a lot, that's why he's so pissed off with the current state of political affairs.

Me too. I've seen him by himself and with Pearl Jam and Booker T & The MGs as his backing bands but never with Crazy Horse. In any case, I hope he returns to the UK soon, it's been too long.
As for the new album, it sounds fantastic and although he's certainly written better lyrics than on Let's Impeach The President, I agree with the sentiment.
Long may he run.

yeah, I posted about this a couple of days ago but I guess it got lost between other subjects. Listening to the album now and it's so good. Respect him a lot.

Thank you so much for the heads up. I have been dying to hear this album. I'm so excited. I'm going to listen to it right now. :blob1: :blob2: :blob1: :blob2:
