The REAL way to get gas prices down

Ok, I finally figured out how to get gas prices back to a reasonable level. All Fleetwood Mac fans must en masse must start writing letters, protesting, whatever we can do, because how the hell are all of us going to be able to go to shows next year if this keeps up?

HomerMcvie 04-24-2006 11:06 AM

I'm sick about this. It cost me$48 to fill my tank last night!:distress: :distress: :distress: :distress: :distress:
I won't be going ANYWHERE this summer. This is going to kill the vacations of many people, right?

Yeah, I would imagine it would. I have a Toyota Corolla, and it's 32 dollars to fill mine even!

DavidMn 04-24-2006 11:10 AM

I'll say this, I'm sure glad I went to those Stevie shows last summer cause I dont if it would be feasible for me to do that this year.

More like about $8 per gallon. The sad thing is that a car is still cheaper than the train :distress:

It costs me about $75 to fill up my tank, and it's just a regular-sized tank :(

Holy Schnikeys that's awful!

HomerMcvie 04-24-2006 11:19 AM

But here in the US, the oil companies are SERIOUSLY price gouging us, and it's wrecking the economy. Something NEEDS to be done.

Yeah - with us, it's the government that are skinning us. 75% of our fuel prices are government tax :(

Mind you, our oil companies aren't exactly making a loss either.

I'm curious, do you folks get most of your oil from the North Sea or do you import most of it?

The UK was a net exporter of oil for over 20 years until recently - we are now a net importer of oil, and our North Sea oil is running out fast. Not sure where the money went, and our oil / petrol hasn't been remotely cheap in global terms for many years. Sounds fair, doesn't it? :(

estranged4life 04-24-2006 12:18 PM

It only cost us...

$28 to fill our rust-bucket '96 Nissan Sentra GXE (Gas here is $2.74 a gallon), which still averages 35-36 miles per gallon even after over 307,000 miles on it. The Nissan is the only vehicle we own (bka the "Black Death Wildlife Eradicator"), And Deb's employer in 45 miles away (One way trip), So we average close to 600 miles a week on our beloved car...Oh, Deb behind the wheel-2/Large Wildlife-0 (A deer sure can leave a huge dent when one commits suicide on your front fender)

Thankfully our only major summer trip will be on Memorial Day weekend (Within state, Thank God!!!)...Otherwise I plan to sit on my duff and try to rest/heal (No Mac tour=No trip!!!)

hayley 04-24-2006 01:14 PM

I normally don't bitch about gas prices, but they're up to $3.15 here, and it's costing $40 to fill my HYUNDAI.

I know that our gas prices are nothing compared to Europe's. But, they've been that way for awhile, and it was a gradual hike. The cost of filling my gas tank has tripled in the last seven years, and has doubled just in the last 2-3. That's a major, major hit to the pocketbook. My cost of living raises and salary increases do nothing to counter the GENERAL rise in cost of living, let alone doubling a gas budget.

I don't actually disagree with the 75% tax issue. This country is so small and so many people want a car and you can get a car really cheaply these days, something has to be done so there is no total gridlock. Most of the USA you can drive for miles with ease (OK, so LA is a nightmare but still...) but in the UK its a totally different story. We need to make it expensive to run a car otherwise nobody would get anywhere at all ever...

What I do disagree with is how the 75% tax is spent. Add to it the money taken by speed cameras and fines too for that matter. I don't see a logical and adequate proportion reinvested into the road system in the UK and that pisses me off.

As does the public transport system too. So far this month I've spent nearly $300 on train fares. It doesn't exactly make you want to abandon the car, despite government advice to use more public transport.

Shell makes $780 a second profit.. Very nice for the major shareholders..

Well you can thank your President for that. Again it's his own interests over those of his countries citizens. His family is making a very tidy profit from the oil crisis I'm sure and there he goes making it even worse by shooting his mouth off over Iran. As if the situation in the Gulf States wasn't bad enough right now he goes and throws more uncertainty in there with comments on leaving nuclear warheads as an option... What a f**kwit. :distress:

This morning I was watching the news and they showed a short clip of the President making a speech last week. He said that we need to start buying Hybrid cars. I mean that would help the problem but buddy....WTF!!! I am 16, just got my license, and only have $5000 to buy a car (my parents are going to be nice enough to pay insurance). And not to sound conceeded buy I am getting paid about 3 more dollars an hour than all my friends at my job. What about them who don't even have 5000? How much are these hybrids? I was told they are very expensive. Now if i get a car by summer Im gunna be lookin at gas prices at over 3 bucks.....:(

It's up to about $3.10 here. I got a discount through a grocery store here (you spend so much & they give you so much off gas) last week, so I was able to get it for $2.49 a gallon.

I coasted in with my fuel light on, then proceeded to fill my tank as well as 4 gas cans (ours and family members) for the lawn mowers. I'm cheap, so I wasn't about to pass this up.

Thats awesome!! I wonder if they do that here.

GypsySorcerer 04-24-2006 05:24 PM

It's hovering just under $3.00 here, around 2.95-2.99. I remember five years ago, $1.50 was considered high for my area.

estranged4life 04-24-2006 05:36 PM

I always wondered...

if the oil companies had something to do with it, since they are the only folkz who are benefitting from his regime, oops, I meant "Presidency".

As for my yard, My grass is not growing since this part of Oklahoma is in the middle of the worse drought since the ol' "Dust Bowl Days"...Thank God/Allah/Whoever for "divine intervention" that my yard is grassless.

A guy in this area was so sick of it he put a motor on his bike. He can go like...180 miles on one gallon of gas.

But that just discriminates against people in rural areas. In Cornwall for example there is effectively no public transport - everyone needs a car or they're screwed. You will never get a job without a car because you'll be perpetually late for work. It's OK for people in cities who can catch trains and buses, but why should people who don't get the benefit of public transport have to pay extortionate rates for fuel?

Maybe people who live in areas with good public transport should pay much more road tax instead.

Well, to be honest, I usually avoid larger chains for gas, I try to help the little guys with one gas station. But I just couldn't pass up $.40 cents off per gallon for a place I shop at anyway.

BTW, it's http://www.topsmarkets.comif anyone lives around here.

estranged4life 04-24-2006 06:06 PM

One thing I wont do...

is complain about the gas prices...Sure they have gone up, But that wasnt much a shock either. When we purchased our Nissan we wanted a smaller sized car due to the savings it could create for gasoline, So there is no complaints coming from this household with rising gasoline prices.

The thing that isnt a shock either is how the sales of SUV's has tanked. Hell, Sales are so bad that the OKC GM Plant had vehicles that sat (On average) on the lot for up to 8 months before being purchased/shipped...All were SUV's.

Sadly, the OKC GM plant has closed due to GM's restructuring, Leaving about 2,100 without jobs.

I predict that gasoline prices will be the only major sticking issue in the upcoming elections...Hell, Stevie Wonder probably could have said "I saw that coming".

I saw the other day that a trucker had to spend over 200 dollars to fill his tank.

Don't worry, it's not going to affect the ECONOMY though!!!

tynan88 04-25-2006 09:37 AM

It's the old sad economics of supply and demand...the more gas we need, and the less there is the more expensive it is going to become. I hope to have enough money to buy a hynrid in the next 18 months but as long as everyone keeps consuming it won't get better.

sara1998 04-25-2006 10:27 AM

I have an '03 Saturn Vue. I guess I get about 25/MPG. In a 15.5 gal. tank, I spent nearly $40 last week. I think I saw gas around $2.77 this morning. When I started driving, around 1994, gas price per gallon was about $.85..... It's sickening how much the price has gone up.

BTFLCHLD 04-25-2006 10:39 AM

be sure to check the tire-pressure folks...
i hadnt for a month and was sucking back
gas on 20 psi on a back tire!
