Exactly! Heartbreaker/Circles In Time is a new song to us. Last year we had Shut Us Down. As any Lindsey fan knows, two new songs in as many years is pretty good going. |

It makes me wonder what the second Buckingham Nicks album would have been like. Would Lindsey have experimented with a rockier sound perhaps? He definitely had to compromise that when he joined Fleetwood Mac, don't you think? Circles In Time/Heartbreaker certainly wouldn't have fit with the dreamy Californian sound of the white album. What do you think of it Gerald? |

I don't think Lindsey necessarily compromised that much though, he didn't get rid of his acoustic (albeit he plays them with an electric guitar) side for this newly discovered live set completely anyway. The beautiful guitar instrumentals are still here, not just "Django" but the apparently then newly-written "NGBA". And he altered ending of "Crystal" for the White Album. On this live take that we now have they build up to an ending that buries the 1973 album take, he plays less notes powerfully. But then in 1975 he just picks beautifully over the coda. Just almost totally different approaches, so I can't say which I would choose over the other! So there probably was some compromise, Lindsey and Stevie had to fit in to the playing style of the new band. I don't believe Lindsey himself would have been interested in a harder rock sound in the studio at that point though. When we compare the Buckingham Nicks album to the live takes, and the live takes of the White Album to the studio versions of those, they always rocked the tracks up live and left the subtlety for studio. Speaking of these "new" live tracks, like I said, the ending to "Crystal" just stuns me out. Played with a cheap-sounding guitar but with raw feeling. "Frozen Love" is played perfectly as well, I miss nothing from its studio counterpart. "Heartbreaker", wonder if the title comes from the Zeppelin song of the same name? A wonderfully grooving piece with nifty riffage, but I can see why he dropped it; it's not quite as memorable as the other stuff he was coming up with at the time. This early "NGBA", although it probably uses the same chords as the Rumours one, has a different feel to me because it sounds more simple in this electric arrangement. Up to the point and pretty, but obviously he wanted to rearrange it later on. And here the band accompanies Lindsey just like Mick and John would do for the 1977 and 2003-2004 live versions. And overall, while Fleetwood Mac would obviously perform "Rhiannon", "Monday Morning" and "Don't Let Me Down Again" more professionally and refined, I just get a kick out of these versions, even "MM" with it's plodding tempo. There's just an apparent enthusiasm in all of this stuff; this is a band with something to prove to audiences and themselves. Fleetwood Mac had that in 1975 too, but it's just too difficult for me to make up my mind on whether I prefer the Buckingham Nicks band versions or the FM versions. Overall, the find of the year for me. No need for a new Lindsey album to me after listening to these, at least in 2006. ;) |

New people in bands always takes compromising--a lot or a little. It's not only a compromise for the new people joining but also for the existing band members. Just little things, even: the way you play in some ways. Because everybody is trying to A) form a pocket & B) lock in to it. So you play with your attack & your dynamics & all that. I'm sure even Mick & John did that to an extent when the new guitarist came in. In terms of more serious compromises, Lindsey may have felt he needed to do so in the beginning, but I don't think too many years went by before he felt he could revert to whatever his musical agenda was when he joined. I think the other four realized that he was the strongest musical voice in terms of conception, so many of the reins were handed over. It was like saying to your friend, "Okay, here. You drive." But you still stay in the car & complain when he turns left & you want to turn right, etc. |
I love Monday Morning too. Their harmonies come to the surface alot more due too "more space" and that adds . it's almost a countrysong this way.
Their harmonies are wonderfully lush throughout. Lola! And I cant get enough of the rocking Sorcerer and the ending of Crystal is just creepingly beautiful. He plays so unpolished and hard throughout the set that gives the whole a more hardrocking feel. The bassist is constantly hammering the snares: sometimes great (Heartbreaker.-when you've heard it twenty times or more it's as catchy as the other stuff he came up with not much later.) but he does it too much: funky bass can work but not throughout a countryrockin' set. But that's the only criticism I have in this euforic state of mind I'm in.... About "almost hardrock": Lindsey will never be a hardrocker because he isn't. He's a popfolkie-a folkpoppie-a folkrocker-or a rockfolker-whatever, he can play as loud as he wants, write as hard as he wants, it will always be a heavy Buckinghamsong, not a hardrockpiece-he just can't. I think he has compromised alot in his life, but that's his thing: sensibility for other musical senses, adapt them and bow them into his own vision. I must say that this whole set has a lot of selfesteem: loose, lush, raw...man what do we wish more........... I Don't Want To Know!! |
