Needin' some Ledgie prayers for my kitty...

1 Attachment(s)
My baby, Cagie, is in the hospital - about 3 weeks ago, he started getting really picky about his food - first not eating his dry food at all - then being super finicky about what flavor of canned food I gave him, and he wouldn't eat any leftovers. Now he's not eating at all, not even tuna. He's also been throwing up a lot, low energy, etc. He's lost about 4 lbs. since this all started.

I just took him in a couple hours ago. They did a blood test while I was there, so we've already ruled out feline leukemia and feline AIDS. His white cell count was a little high, his glucose is a little on the high side as well. They wanted to admit him to get him rehydrated and on antibiotics, keep running tests, and he will be there until Tues. nite. I was a WRECK when I said goodbye and handed him off...I don't even remember driving home. The vet just called me with the x-ray results, no tumors or masses of anything, so it's not cancer. Much of his bloodwork results could still be from the dehydration, so once he gets rehydrated, they'll run it all again. At this point, the vet is thinking thyroid, kidney infection or early signs of diabetes, which are all treatable, but I'm still worried sick...

So, my baby's not out of the woods yet, we're still in a holding pattern. Yes, he's getting older too (he's 14). I've gone from denial to now being angry that he's old and not well and he may leave me soon. :(

I need to rant on this: When I got to the vet, there was a mom, her two young sons (one about 5 and the other about 2) and their cute as could be healthy, Beagle puppy, who had apparently just received his first round of shots. I had obviously already been crying when I brought in my kitty. Both boys got all excited and started screaming, "Oooh, a kitty!!" and stuck their fingers in his pet carrier. I told them that he was very sick and asked that they leave him alone. Not even 2 seconds later, the younger kid comes back and does it again. I turned the pet carrier around, so Cagie is facing the wall and they can't see each other. Then the younger kid grabs the carrier and turns it so he can poke his fingers in there again! His older brother goes, "He's gonna bite you!" I'm thinking, I wish he would! The mom is oblivious to everything while she's making the appt. for the puppy's booster shots. I'm so upset at this point, but still managed to calmly say to her, "Excuse me, but could you please control your children?" She told the boys to leave the cat alone, and they left. I asked the other 2 people in the reception area if I sounded like a beeyotch, but frankly, I didn't care if I did! They said no, and that they would have done the same thing. That little kid is lucky I didn't drop-kick his ass out the door.

Anyway - kitty prayers and good vibes are much appreciated! :distress:

strandinthewind 04-02-2006 01:43 PM

OUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hang in there kiddo!!!!!

AND - people should have to take a class before they are allowed to breed hellion offspring

GypsySorcerer 04-02-2006 01:47 PM

I'm sending good vibes to your kitty. Hang in there.

HomerMcvie 04-02-2006 01:53 PM

Kitty prayers coming your way.:)

sodascouts 04-02-2006 02:12 PM

From me, too! I know how hard it is when you're cat's sick. :(

DrummerDeanna 04-02-2006 02:13 PM

Oh my :( I will keep you and your kitty in my prayers...the worse thing must be not knowing what wrong! I hope they find out so that he can get on the fast track to recovery.

AND Good for you for telling that mother to control her kids! You're my new hero :)

irishgrl 04-02-2006 02:20 PM

Oooooooh, I am so sorry to hear your baby is sick......its so hard I know.....
sending white light to your kitty now.

ragandbone 04-02-2006 03:48 PM

Oh I hope kitty is better soon!
I have had my older cats relaly spring back after those big does of fluids they get at the vets. Several of my cats at 14 plus have had diminished kidney function, and had to get fluids at home as well, but it really helped.

I think it is totally fine that you asked that mother to control her children at the animal hospital. What if you had brought a sick grandma to a hospital and some nearby children wanted to crawl into her lap, or ask her questions?

foxyluva 04-02-2006 03:55 PM

Im so sad to hear this :(

If my cat was ill - i would just die :(

I hope everything turns out okay :o

Nixxxed 04-02-2006 04:10 PM

Hope Cagie hangs in there!

I'll speak to Zorro, and we'll get the feathered world on your side too.

:xoxo:

DavidMn 04-02-2006 04:25 PM

I am a cat LOVER so this touched me. It's hard, beleive me. We've had this one cat for 14 years, and I cant imagine being without him.

wondergirl9847 04-02-2006 04:48 PM

Livia...

Sorry to hear about Cagie. :( Prayers coming ya'll's way. :)

That mom needed to be slapped for not disciplining her kids.

WelshWitchPMD 04-02-2006 05:23 PM

Sending love and prayers for Cagie. He is a cutie. I would have told that lady off too. Good for you. That was the last thing that you needed to deal with at that moment. Some people just have no clue. I would have said please keep your little animals away from my baby. Well maybe not.

jannieC 04-02-2006 05:26 PM

You're in my thoughts too- I hope your kitty pulls through this. xoxo

estranged4life 04-02-2006 05:51 PM

Your kitty has my thoughts...

as i just lost my "lil man" Rufus yesterday morning. He passed away due to IFP...But at least I was able to make his final days peaceful and loved filled, Saddest thing was hearing him "meow" about 10 times immediately before he passed (I was alone at home at the time and cried my eyes out...I dont like to have anyone see me cry)

I did keep my promise to myself that he would make it through the month of March without passing on...Just couldnt tolerate another death in my family during the month of March.

I'm sorry to hear man. Wow - this is turning out to be a rough few weeks for the Ledge Pets.

pianogirl04 04-02-2006 11:54 PM

*big, big hugs* I'm pulling for you and Cagie, Livia... :xoxo:

We found out about a month ago that my puppy of 14 years has hip dysplasia -- mom came home one night and he had fallen on the concrete outside and couldn't get up. Took him to the vet, found out what was wrong, but that he's in otherwise great shape... they put him on glucosamine and pain medication, and after about a week he finally started putting his foot down again and now you'd never know he has hip dysplasia. Except he keeps wheezing and breathing hard in the middle of the night, and occasionally falls down the stairs... :( poor puppy.

Patti 04-03-2006 06:21 AM

Awwwww Livia, you two will be in my thoughts. I hope Cagie is feeling better fast.

And Brian, I'm sorry for the loss of your kitty. That sucks.

Sorry about your kitty Brian. And I'm praying for Cagie. I love kitties. I have 2 left of my own.
Brian- I'm sure Rufus is up there now playing with 2 of my kitties that I lost recently, Punky and Rebel. Probably having the best time. We still miss them though...

I'm so sorry about your kitty Livia. I will be sending good thoughts and well wishes his way.

Those kids sound like two little brats! You handled it a lot more calmly than I would have.

Sorry to hear about your loss, Brian...hang in there!

:xoxo: To both of you

Livia 04-03-2006 10:46 AM

Thanks everyone - and Brian, I am SO sorry about your boy, Rufus. I'll bet he was glad you were there...By the way, what is IFP?

Update: They ran another blood test last night and his glucose is normal, so I don't think diabetes is a concern anymore. They did a urinalysis, there was a little blood there, which may be from the catheter insertion, but may also be from kidney infection. I didn't notice any blood when I've cleaned his litter box...He ate a little bit last night, and threw up at 6 AM today. But it hasn't even been 24 hours yet for all the meds to do their thing. One of those meds is an anti-nausea drug, so I'm worried cuz he vomited, but they told me not to worry... I'm supposed to call back after 2 to see what the results are on his latest blood test...

Meanwhile, the f*cking raccoon in my attic hasn't been caught yet. And since they've sealed off all its entry/exit points, it's now stuck in the attic, NOT going in the traps, and I get to hear it scratching, thumping around, and all the other fun noises it's making at night and I'm not getting any sleep...this morning, when I backed my car out of the garage, there was sawdust and wood chips ALL over the hood. The attic door/ladder is directly over my car, so it must have been trying to chew its way out thru there...I just called the idiots I'm paying hundreds of dollars to get rid of this sucker and asked them if they had a Plan B, since nothing seems to be working. And every day that it's not caught, it's up there causing more damage to my property. They asked me if the raccoon was in the garage, I practically screamed at the guy, "If I saw it in the garage, don't you think I would have mentioned that??????" They haven't even found its nest yet - and my other concern is that if there are babies also, that they'll trap the adult and leave the babies behind to starve and die and decompose and stink...I think I raised enough hell for them to do more than what they've tried thus far....I would also like to have the raccoon out before kitty comes home from the hospital. He's going to need peace and quiet to recuperate....

Calgon, take me away....

Man, when it rains it pours huh? This isn't quite as bad, but we had a squirrel trapped in our walls a couple of months ago, and I could also hear it trying to chew its way out and it was trapped in the wall right behind our bed  really creepy! It finally died, but it stunk to high heaven for a week! That was NOT fun.

Could your kitty have a virus? Or possibly have an intenstinal bacterial infection from something he ate? All that nausea and throwing up sound like it to me

I know - I keep thinking I'm getting all the bad sh*t for the year over and done with now...at least I hope so.

Yeah, could be a gastrointestinal thing - that's why they're giving him the particular antibiotic he's getting, it covers a broad spectrum of infections. He wasn't running a fever, so that's good.

I hope your baby is okay. Maybe he is having urinary tract problems? Have you noticed any crystals? Poor baby. I will light a candle for him.

Nope - we've been there, done that. Thanksgiving of 2004- when I was calling him the kitty with the $700 penis. :) He's been on Rx food from the vet and no problems since then...

Oh my gosh. I'm so sorry, Brian. You know, I sobbed for 20 minutes after my cat died in that vet's office. When he cried as they injected him, I just kept saying "I'm sorry, baby, I love you" (I called him my baby even though he was 20). The vet then reassured me that I was doing the right thing, and I know it was for the best and it had to be done, but it still makes me cry to think of that moment. It was one of the hardest things I'ver ever done. I feel for you so much, Brian. :(

 Is there anything we won't do for them? I've recently started mine on organic cat food because I want to make sure they're getting enough moisture and little preservatives in their diet.
I just lit my special peace candle with rosemary, patchouli and lavender essential oils for Cagie. To his good health... :wavey:

$$$ for their food than we do for our food when grocery shopping (Our frikkin' children eat twice a day, Dry food in the morning and canned food in the evening.)

Right now Run-Nugget is doing his usual Labrador-CAT-riever routine in the hallway, He keeps bringing me his "jingleball" toy each time I throw it into the hallway, all the while "yippin'" at me...And he NEVER quits until I give up (Great, he just tripped over a rug-gopher and went did a 360 vertically...Darn idiot just keeps a bringin' me his ball...Now he is doin' the dying cockroach)

Oh, did I mention Patches (The Infamous Crackhead Calico) gave birth to her third (And final) litter on March 9th? We had her mate "Jr" fixed and yet he was able to father those darn kittens ("Nugget", "Re-Tread", "Squeak" & "Bertha")
