Did Laura Branigan have any good albums?

I think she has a good voice, but the production of her songs is schlocky to me. I have never heard an album by her, and if I were going to get one, I would like a recommendation on which one is the best.

Ta-ta!

amber 03-28-2006 01:06 AM

Me, too! Of course, Gloria, and Self Control are on my ishuffle, but I've never heard that a whole album of hers is good.

BombaySapphire3 03-28-2006 01:10 AM

She was a singles artist .Her most recent and I think posthumous compliation should suffice .

Yeah. I always felt bad for her because she couldn't write songs herself. And by "always" I mean "in the past year or so". :wavey:

Richard B 03-28-2006 02:27 AM

Hehe...you answered your own question: schlocky.

But if you must pick one full length album, go with Self Control or Branigan 2. Best bet would be a compilation, the older one is better: Best of Branigan.

In my opinion, she had no good albums.

P.S. Oh my god, is she dead?

Yeah, last yearish. :( I shed a tear when they played her clip during the "who died last year" portion of the grammys. Gloria, it was, they played.
Disco ball and all.
The grammy crowd roared. :) I think all us 70's/80's kids were shocked, she was so young...
:p :distress:

GLORIA, GLORIA!!!

girl had some pipes, as they say...:woohoo:

WHOA OH OH! WHOA OH OH!
(whoaohoh.whoaohoh.whoaohoh.whoaohoh!)

*something really freaky just happened. I was editing this post, and I hit something, I guess? And my itunes started playing "Gloria". But it wasn't next, and I don't really think I hit anything. Swear.

I love me some Laura - but there is no way she has had a decent album , not that I have heard them all - But I have the self titled one and Touch, the one with Cry Wolf - and they are both very average, BombaySapphire3 was right in saying she is a singles artist.

I find her style to be very similar to Paula Abdul - if you like a WHOLE Paula Abdul album, you will most likely like a WHOLE Laura Branigan album :woohoo:

Yeah but Laura could actually carry a tune.Paula couldn't if her life depended on it .90% of the rejects on AI sing better than Paula.

JazmenFlowers 03-28-2006 10:26 AM

I love Laura and it was so sad when she died. I have a couple of her albums, but I couldn't tell you the names of them. I agree with everyone that a "best of" would be the way to go.

DavidMn 03-28-2006 02:50 PM

Did she O.D? She couldnt have been very old.

laura had a headache for like 3 days & went to bed 1 night & didn't wake up, yep it was an aneurysm (*SP)~
very sad~ i love "gloria" & solitaire"~

Richard B 03-28-2006 07:03 PM

Solitaire was the song I loved. I also think her cover of Dim All The Lights is really good.

Can't say that I enjoy (or even tolerate) her music anymore...but I sure did in the 80's. Spanish Eddie was fun.

She's got a strong voice, interesting vocals.

Solitaire is my favorite too. I can't stand her version of How Am I Supposed To Live Without You...eeekkk!

Its definate that Laura could sing better than Paula - but their albums I find to be similar - all filler, no killer.

I know I'm beating a dead horse, but for the life of me I dont understand why they havent gotten more of a foothold here. BUt the good thing is when I saw them live here in Minneapolis, they played a small club with only about 500 people.

Its very hard for artists based outside of the US to get a foothold in the states without major backing from a record label - and since V2 is hardly a major, there is probably little or no chance of them getting big over there - maybe if they signed to directly or indirectly to one of the majors, and wether the company sees it in there best interests, they may push them to sell in the states

Oh well. One of the things I love about them is that they dont really give a ****. They just do their thing, and if you, like it, great, if you dont, move on. It was funny when I met them though Kelly told me that if we were over in the U.K theyd need bodyguards. I was the only one waiting when they showed up here.

I assume they are popular everywhere outside of the US.

Its really funny how everybody knows so much about artists from America, but Americans don't know anything about artists from other countrys

Living in the US is like living in your own world isnt it

It can be. I've been lucky enought to have traveled to Europe twice, Hong Kong and Australia. It has really helped broaden my perspective. Although I regret when I went to Australia I didnt do New Zealand.:(

Sorry to interrupt the private conversation, but I found an interesting tidbit on imdb.com. According to that site, the producer of the 1983 James Bond film Octopussy announced Laura Branigan as the singer of its theme song, which was "All Time High". I guess plans changed, because Rita Coolidge ended up singing it.
