If it's a fruity bagel (blueberry, raisin, you get the idea) I prefer a touch of butter.

If it's a plain bagel, then flavored cream cheese. Wegman's has a fantastic honey nut cream cheese, I am in love with it. Strawberry's good too. Not a fan of onion or garlic.

Oddly enough, I do love onion or garlic bagels. Actually, the "eveything" bagel is my fave, and I had a jalapeno bagel once that was great. On those, plain cream cheese.

In all cases, I only like a little bit. I hate when there are globs of anything on my bagel. That goes for any bread product, now that I think about it. I only smear a little bit of mayo, butter, cream cheese, whatever. I don't like it messy.

golddustwoman77 03-19-2006 03:28 PM

Some of my favorites:

(1) hummus with alfalfa sprouts

(2) peanut butter and bananas

(3) butter and blackberry jam with the seeds

Red 03-19-2006 03:46 PM

Mmm, how about whipped cream cheese with strawberry jam on top. Its practically dessert.

Has anyone tried toast (preferably whole grain) with cheese whiz and strawberry jam? It sounds revolting but its actually incredibly delicious!

foxyluva 03-19-2006 03:52 PM

Ive never had a bagel :distress:

macfanken 03-19-2006 04:00 PM

Cream cheese with strawberry jam. The best bagels I've had have been on Delta flights, much better than what I get at the store. strange.

amber 03-19-2006 04:03 PM

Butter.

But bagels are way too carb laden.

Cinnamon raisin bagel with butter!

Richard B 03-19-2006 04:33 PM

This Jew guy is appalled at your choices.

I hope at least you still prefer the boil cooking as opposed to straight up baked bagels.

There's a deli not too far from my house that's been there for 50+years. It's jewish owned, and it still has the best bagels I've ever had.

You can definitely spot the goyim on the list. Look at all that crap on the bagels: bits of fruit, peanut butter, hummus, alfalfa, honey nuts, flavored cream cheese, strawberries, blackberry jam, etc. etc. etc.

Gadzooks.

We all know about Bruegger's, but is there a sort of "Gourmet" bagel place out there somewhere?

best bagels - hands down: "st. viateur bagel" in montreal.

you have not had a real bagel til you've had a montreal bagel.

diamondsnake 03-19-2006 10:42 PM

Yuck! Just butter for me, thanks!

Maybe I'm just a simple country boy, but the idea of smoked cod on a bagel doesn't sound good!

Brwn_eyes0511 03-19-2006 11:34 PM

vegi cream cheese

I've always wanted to go to Montreal for a multitude of reasons, but the main ones would be to try Montreal smoked meat on a bagel and then poutine. I loooove poutine, but I imagine it as being soooo much better in Montreal.

you won't be sorry if you go to montreal! :) hope you do get there.

here's a tip: smoked meat on RYE - not on a bagel! go to schwartz's deli on st. laurent for your smoked meat. THEN - walk up the street to st. viateur street... and get some still-warm and chewy bagels for dessert!

poutine... well.... not quite a proud specialty of montreal. but if you go outside of montreal you'll get the real thing. it's all about cheese curds and the sauce. me? can't stomach the stuff.

chiliD 03-20-2006 12:10 PM

Hmmmm...hummus on a bagel...that could be the start of Middle East peace! Gotta start somewhere I guess.

My faves depend on my mood at the moment. But, usually, it's: WAY TOO MUCH whipped cream cheese on a toasted cinnamon-raisin bagel.

I also like:

Lox & cream cheese (on an onion bagel)
Black Raspberry jam & cream cheese (on a plain or egg bagel)
Strawberry flavored cream cheese (on plain or fruity bagels)
"Garden Vegetable" cream cheese (on plain, onion, or poppy-seed bagels only)

SuzeQuze 03-20-2006 12:33 PM

Panera Bread cinnamon bagels are so good. That name drives me nuts though because it is redundant. We also have Finagle a Bagel 'round here which has good bagels. The best bagel I've ever had was on Long Island, so moist in center and chewey/crunchy on outside, perfection!

I like cream cheese straight up best on a bagel but also enjoy the flavored varieties.

HAHA! I would agree.

JazmenFlowers 03-20-2006 03:35 PM

there's a place here called Beagle Bagel Co. - it is fabulous!

my favorite is their walnut cream cheese topping

Livia 03-20-2006 03:46 PM

My favorite - a toasted "everything" bagel with (and must be put on in this exact order, on each half, from the bottom up):

Reduced fat cream cheese
Chopped purple onion - stuck in the cream cheese
Smoked, peppered salmon
Tiny bit of torn or shredded lettuce
Thinly sliced tomatoes with a bit of salt and pepper

Dee-lish!

And whenever I make a blueberry or cinnamon/raisin bagel, I toast it and put either peanut butter or cream cheese on one half, and margarine on the other half.

cliffdweller 03-20-2006 04:51 PM

smoked salmon, cream cheese, capers, and tomato

ragandbone 03-20-2006 07:13 PM

a pumpernickel (I have trouble finding these) or egg bagel with whipped cream cheese and a slice of tomato. yum
