KT Tunstall - heard of her? Any fans?
http://www.fortwayne.com/mld/newssentinel/13998468.htm
She's getting lots of airplay here - I like what I've heard so far! Posted on Thu, Mar. 02, 2006 An eye to the bluesy side of Britpop BY BRAD REVARE Knight Ridder Newspapers A weekly entertainment review - anything from books and video games to movies and music. TITLE/ARTIST: "Eye to the Telescope," KT Tunstall QUICK DESCRIPTION: A United Kingdom import with a cool name, KT brings her fresh bluesy pop tunes stateside. FIRST REACTION: Vastly better than Ashlee Simpson and Avril Lavigne, Tunstall might already be able to compete with the big female singer-songwriters like Sheryl Crow, despite this being her first album. BEST FEATURE: No cliche lyrics, no generic, retread rock riffs, just KT, her guitar and simple but effective instrumentation. This describes Tunstall's breezy, unassuming yet powerful debut album. Unlike other current female acts out there, KT doesn't even attempt to copy Kelly Clarkson's "Since U Been Gone." "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree" sounds like an aggressive Stevie Nicks track, while "Other Side of the World" is a pleasant Britpop song, evoking comparisons to the much loved UK band Travis. WORST FEATURE: KT Tunstall enters the volatile U.S. singer-songwriter demographic, where success and popularity are never guaranteed, even with a stellar album. Comparisons to Sheryl Crow are inevitable, and "Eye to the Telescope" doesn't have that one killer song, like "Everyday Is a Winding Road," which launched Crow into the stratosphere. However, KT does have a collection of very good songs, and hopefully subsequent albums will further explore the bluesy, beat-driven songs that made this album so great. FOR FANS OF: Sheryl Crow, Travis and Fiona Apple. DON'T MISS: "Other Side of the World," "Another Place to Fall," "Miniature Disasters." --- Brad Revare is a senior at Blue Valley North High School in Overland Park, Kan. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- © 2006 KRT Wire and wire service sources. I heard a clip of the song Black Horse and Cherry Tree? on a VH1 commercial and I liked the sound of it, so I downloaded it. That's all I've heard so far, but I do like the song a lot.

Does it sound Stevie-ish, like that writer said?

I have her album! I got it as a gift a few months ago... I uh, actually haven't had much of a listen yet. I like Black Horse, though. It is a bit Stevie-ish. I've read a lot of reviews where her style is compared to Janis Joplin's, which I agree with.

it's funny you mention this cause I heard this song for the first time yesterday and had never heard of her and thought "hmmm, I hear a little Stevie in there"
|
I don't really like her but she is getting loads of air play here in the UK. I feel I could like/LOVE her if her songs just had that little punch. They're not bad to listen too they just seem to be missing something, somethig which would really make the song but without it I feel let down after hearing it.
katie melua (shes had 2 albums but only recently had recognition in the UK) is a female artist of todays charts that I much prefer to KT. Her songs again seem to be missing something in them, there just a little to mellow but its great chilling out music. Her voice struck me as being Stevie influenced at first and her song writing has the kind of unpredictable/unconventional layouts that Stevie also has. I don't know how big etither KT or katie melua are in the states so ill post a song. http://s33.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0...Y0OZ6QCOQF1X0W |
I went to see her when she was still playing tiny Universities and altho I didnt really make a Stevie-connection, I did think she was excellent :)
|
Duh - I've heard it - that's the song they're playing on the radio - you can listen here:
http://2006.sxsw.com/music/showcases/band/3985.html# And I just added her to my sxsw calendar. :wavey: Edit: She's playing at the same time as the Arctic Monkeys, dammit. I'll try to catch her at a day party or in-store, if she's doing any. |
I have heard the song "Black horse and a Chrry Tree" I REALLY like it and I really like her voice....reminds me a little bit of Stevie...lol...I might download her song...lol
|
You know, its really strange that they would compare her to Stevie. I got a bunch of reviews from different magazines at work for this album, and this is what one of them said "...with the songcraft of Christine McVie"

I ****ing love this song!

i saw her open for jason collett of broken social scene a few months ago. she is frickin' BRILLIANT. what is amazing is how she plays all the percussion, etc. on all her tracks. it's her, her guitar, and this groovy little recording thing - and she records different vocals, or percussions, and then plays them back as she is playing live. the number of planes her highly creative mind thinks on at one time is mind-boggling. i bet she's a math genius.
oh, and her music rocks. |
I like her lyrics and voice, there's a lot of truth in her songs.

I'm not a big fan of her music but I saw her live once and its incredible the way she layers the instruments and vocals using her delay pedal, sampling each part right in front of her audience, until it sounds like shes got a whole band playing with her. She's certainly talented although nothing like Stevie IMO.
She been hugely successful here in the UK over the past year and I'd take her anyday over that nauseating singing toff James Blunt. |
She wears legwarmers? :D
KT Tunstall is a sparkling new songwriter with Chinese blood, a Scottish heart, great legwarmers and a cool name - "well, it's got a bit more attitude than Kate which just says farmer's daughter to me," she laughs. KT celebrates classic singer-songwriting in the tradition of Rikki Lee Jones, Carol King and Fleetwood Mac with an articulate, accessible, immediate brew of rootsy sass, wistful quandary and after-hours atmosphere. The latest in a line of outstanding contemporary Scottish songwriters including Texas, Fran Healy, Teenage Fanclub and The Beta Band, KT's unique perspective offers a rare emotionally connecting intensity through it's gripping lyrical bite and heartfelt melody. http://muzica.moldova.org/formatii/eng/321/ |
I'm not really a fan, although Suddenly I See is damn catchy! I never made the Stevie connection until seeing her performance at the Brit awards, when I decided that she sounded quite like her, although I asked a few people whether they agreed and they all looked at me as if I was mad.
Glad other people can hear the similarity! :) |

![]() I'm so glad that someone besides me knows of KT! I can't remember the movie or show that I first heard her singing on...but I immediately began pausing the credits to read the singer! I then went online right away to find out more about her...and I was soooo impressed! Here's why...take a look at her LIVE! ![]() http://boss.streamos.com/wmedia/virg001/kt_tunstall/video/eye_to_the_telescope/kt_tunstall_black_horse_jools_hi.asx?siteid=myspacekttunstallpage |

Thought you'd be interested to know that the Artic Monkeys will be on Saturday Night Live as their musical guest on March 11th! http://kcrw.com/smil/mb051118Arctic_Monkeys.ram But that's just me ...she's so different and if you read the reviews of AM, you'll see that everyone is saying they are alot like the other Brit bands. Don't get me wrong, I like alot of them...but some of them need to be different to really grab my attention and these guys just don't yet. I have all of KT's songs, PM me if you want to hear more... ![]() ![]() No More TV Appearances For Arctic Monkeys They refuse future interviews... By: Daniel Melia on 2/24/2006 12:30:02 PM Artic Monkeys have said that will refuse to any future TV interviews because the ones they’ve done so far are “abysmal”. The Sheffield four piece have said they will only now make live appearances with pre-recorded material being a big no-no. According to fan site mardy-bum, drummer Matt Helders said: "The TV interviews we did were abysmal. We just don't want to do it. We don't think we should have to do that stuff just because we're in a band.” "You can't win - either you're a knobhead for not doing stuff, or you bore people if they see your face everyday." Front man Alex Turner added: "And then there's the politics. You can't do one TV show without doing the other.” |
