This is a post about the Sandra Halliburton book, apparently from when the story first came out. It has the original photo of Stevie that, I believe, was included on the website.
A photo of Stevie signing something. And yet, Halliburton claimed that
the photo which is currently on there - of Stevie signing something - was not meant to imply that the pre-ordered books will be signed by Stevie herself, but was just simply a photo she found on the Net which she liked a great deal.
Something to think about, perhaps....

Yep, I'm thinking about it, alright. She probably found all sorts of things on the net that she stuck in her book for which the devotees are to pay HER $25.00 and change to read. Could she possibly have found a more UN-flattering pic of Stevie? Somehow I don't think Stevie would approve of her making money off HER name and HER fans. :distress:

This book is in NO WAY authorized, despite the fact that she linked Nicks Fix on her website. If she dares to suggest it's authorized in any way by Stevie Nicks, she's lying.

Mokona 02-17-2006 09:11 PM

Is this another one of those awful books that just takes a few facts and a whole bunch of inaccuracies to create one gramatically incorrect, poorly edited piece of crap?

Until Stevie writes her own book or authorizes someone to do it for her, I'm not reading anymore of these. How many times have we read the same old stories, over and over? How is there going to be anything new in here that we haven't already heard through countless interviews and places like The Ledge?

This one's apparently different - the author's a very well-established 50-something-year old who lives in Texas, and she's really intelligent, and it appears as if she pretty much has her heart in the right place and "gets it."
Still . . . that picture is raising some eyebrows.
Watch this one - this may be a WONDERFUL book -
but this lady, in my opinion, is NOT naive and she knows how to play the game. VERY well. I'm not saying people shouldn't buy the book -
ALL i'm saying is that the picture on her website does NOT mean that the pre-ordered books
are signed by Stevie. Apparently she just found this photo on the net and liked it. (She mentioned that in a post somewhere after I raised holy hell about this over on sevenwondersonline.)
Just like . . . she uhh. . . found that PREVIOUS photo . . . of Stevie . . .
appearing to be signing something . . . I GUESS she must have liked that one too. . . .  :wavey: :blob1:

You can count on that happening (unless someone is given access to the band & its people) because these authors otherwise just collate all old interviews in magazines & make a book out of that. That's what Leah Furman did. She did nothing more than what many of us do all year long: scour the Blue Letter Archives & other online sources of print interviews.

Read Between My Lines: The Musical and Life Journey of Stevie Nicks
Sandra Halliburton
Due out, July 31

BOOK DESCRIPTION

Whether giving back through her patriotism and community service, touring with Fleetwood Mac or performing as a solo artist, Stevie Nicks has mesmerized us for over thirty years. Her life story, with all its highs and lows, provides an opportunity to grow from her tremendous strength, persistence and courage while learning from the challenges she has faced. A widely revered singer/songwriter, Stevie is adored by multiple generations.

Interpretation of her songs gives you a look inside her soul but "not unless she lets you." On "Stand Back" from The Wild Heart, Stevie’s second solo album she sings, "No one knows how I feel what I say unless you read between my lines." Her highly personal songwriting tells the story. * Stevie's relationship with Lindsey Buckingham serves as a consistent basis for her songwriting and decisions made along her life journey.

* The book chronicles Stevie's musical accomplishments while highlighting the pain and sacrifice women face leading a rock 'n' roll lifestyle.

Did Halliburton interview Nicks & her friends, family & co-workers? Did she interview anyone connected with Nicks?

That's still the bottom line. It's Journalism 101. Either you're doing your own research or you're grabbing & collating secondary sources, which is of no value to us serious fans because we have already done this for ourselves--& for a lot longer than Miss Halliburton spent doing it.

The way I see it, the only person who has the right to object is Stevie herself. And if it is published as an "unauthorized" biography, I dont think she can do much about it. I myself cant see why people get all up in arms about someone writing about Stevie in the first place

This description came from Amazon.

It sounds like she may delve into song interpretation, which could be an interesting read. Otherwise, it doesn't appear like groundbreaking work, just going on the description.

I think it's because there have been so many poorly written ones about her or Fleetwood Mac, usually containing glaring mistakes.

Well, Ive seen people trash Mick about HIS book(s) and their content so I guess even if you're a first-hand player, you are suspect!!

I see what David means about people already having done their own research and not needing yet another Stevie tome........but for those who havent, maybe the book will be a nice leg up?

ELIUD 06-30-2006 06:12 PM

I'm going to send her a fan experience hoping she'll use it on the sleeve or wherever to try and get a free book.

Her response to advance copies:

I wish I could but I'm restricted from sending advance copies by my distributor. You can feel free to add the book cover photo and link to Amazon if that is of interest to you.

The trouble with Mick's book (aside from biases against certain members & in favor of certain other members, which tend to skew a reasoned historical perspective but which certainly provide for an interesting read) was that his ghostwriter paraphrased the archive of articles to fill in what Mick himself either couldn't remember or had no personal comment on.

The pile of books on Fleetwood might serve that purpose: a leg up for the newbies or the uninformed. But it's been a dismal history of Fleetwood Mac or Stevie Nicks book publishing since at least as far back as 1984, when Steve Clarke published his Fleetwood Mac book.

The books published in the 1970s--Samuel Graham's "Authorized History," Charlie Walters's "Headliners," Susan Katz's "Superwomen of Rock," & Roy Carr's "Rumours 'n' Fax"--all consisted of varying degrees of original (or primary) research, mostly in the form of interviews of the band. Those books happen, maybe coincidentally, also to be the most reliable, reasonable histories of the band.

But the spate of books since 1984--Steve Clarke's "Fleetwood Mac," Bob Brunning's "The First 30 Years," Peter Lewry's "Complete Recording Sessions," Ed Wincentsen's "Rock's Mystical Lady," "Lady of the Stars" & "Fleetwood Mac Through the Years," Cath Carroll's "Never Break the Chain" & Leah Furman's "Rumours Exposed"--consist of practically no primary research & no first-generation interviews. These books do nothing but collate stacks of material from magazines, newspapers & other books (secondary research) into paraphrased--sometimes even plagiarized--narrative. It's a joke among most fans who buy these books that they do so only for the photos (& sometimes even the photos are the common ones we've all seen before).

It's unbelievable that there isn't an author or a publishing entity out there that thinks it would be both important & lucrative to write a more serious biographical history of the band, in which members, family, friends & co-workers are interviewed & allowed their say, so that new insights & perspectives can be revealed. Any decent biography consists in large part of primary research & first-hand accounts generated specifically for the work itself. It's a real shame Fleetwood Mac hasn't been served this way since probably 1978, when Sam Graham was authorized to write about the band for a book. Any such primary work on the Mac in the future wouldn't necessarily change the story, but it would certainly freshen it up & give it a cachet that all these other books--rushed, crummy, cheap, lazy--totally lack.

Well, if what has been circulating as rumor is in fact true, maybe these friends/family etc are under some sort of gag order (or other restraint)?

I have no idea. I have never heard anything about that. It seems unlikely to me--like some of the political conspiracy theories you hear.

What would the punishment be for any of the FM or SN employees who spill? Termination? Dozens of them over the decades have probably already been fired or have resigned anyway. Ethlie Ann Vare's 1984 Stevie Nicks book (a good one, by the way) is filled with personal comments about Stevie & friends by a lot of co-workers.

I think maybe a lot of Stevie's friends self-impose a "Do Not Disclose" voluntarily just because they feel a great loyalty to Stevie. You can hear that loyalty in some of the Q&A stuff on Nicks Fix & even on this site. These people often say, "That's none of my business." It would take a very persistent biographer to get these people to say something of substance for a properly done book. Of course, that would require talking to them in the first place, which is something most of the FM/SN writers probably don't bother doing.

I read the first chapter on Amazon..no big whoop..all rehash.
I'd rather read GOOD WITCH/BAD WITCH...LOL!

sparky 07-30-2006 07:53 PM

The excerpt is pretty well written. It is a lot of quotes from other soruces, but I think it is woven together well. I think it'll be a fun read. The Dolly Parton quote is hysterical. On many levels.

Someone may have already noted this after reading the excerpt from the book, but I noticed that she quoted from the Nicksfix.com A LOT! Also, she quoted fan reviews...does anyone recognize on PAGE 9 the review about the America West Arena Show? She should ask permission for this and/or pay those people for the right to print this don't you think? Otherwise, this is unauthorized and illegal on many levels...

The book is being released, it should hit distribution warehouses later this month. I was lucky enough to get a review copy. It's not a bad book, it just doesn't shed any new light for those of us who have devoured every little tidbit of Stevie's career. For a new fan, or the casual fan looking for more info, it's good. I am booking the author for a short tour through some of our stores later in the Fall. I will keep you posted as to where she goes...as long as you guys are nice to her.

Why book her? Has she been reading the Blue Letter Archives any more thoroughly than most of us? What has she got to tell us?

BTFLCHLD 08-03-2006 12:02 PM

The book appears to be a bore...I reviewed a few excerpts and, from what I can tell, all that has been done is a re-hash of old interviews and a bazillion references to nicksfix.
