You're Fired (Literally)

So anyhoo, Here I sat 24 hours ago thinking I was going into work at 3:30 for a review and a nice raise. I get there, and the manager calls me into the back room and was like "before we start this I have to ask you a question. Did you eat one of the hot dog's off the grill when you threw them away last night. I was like "Sure I did. I was throwing them away anyway." Not exactly one of my better moves to say that. SHe proceeds to say "well, then I have to fire you." I was like HUH?!?!?!? What are you talking about? She said "I was watching the video tape and I saw you doing this." I wanted to give you a chance to answer. I wasnt going to lie. The thing that pisses me off is that I was very loyal to this place, even though it didnt pay a ton of money. They gave me a job when I needed it and I respect that. I used to take the old hot dogs home to the dog and feed them to him and this lady that works there and I would at the end of the night eat one or 2 as I threw them away. So something about this doesnt add up. Talk about a kick to this stomach. Here I've been working to build things up again after haveing ****ed up pretty bad over the last 7 months and now it's gone in a snap of a finger. I'm trying really hard not to get into that self pity mode. I was watching that Flight 93 movie last night and thinking to myself "That couldve been me." or I couldve been an Enron worker and lost my life savings. You wanna try to have that glass half full attitude, but man after going from a nice raise to fired it aint easy. Sorry to vent like this, but I need that support right now. Thank you.:)

Richard B 01-31-2006 03:03 PM

David that sucks. Why do they fire people for eating hot dogs that are being thrown away anyway? Super weird. You're probably better off.

gldstwmn 01-31-2006 03:05 PM

Hey David, I'm sorry to hear that. That was a crappy thing for them to do. I doubt it's really your fault. They probably just don't want to give you a raise because it would cut into their profits. I'd file for unemployment. And look for something else in the meantime. Sometimes these things are meant to be.

DavidMn 01-31-2006 03:07 PM

And I look at it this way too. I've been very lucky in my life. Maybe I was due for a bad break.

amber 01-31-2006 03:08 PM

I'm sorry, David. Yeah, file for unemployment quick.
I hope this turns out to be a blessing in disguise.
The reason they fired you does sound like an excuse rather than the real reason.
Although, when I was young and worked at fast food, you weren't allowed to eat the things that had to be thrown out either. So maybe that was the real reason. But if it was, they should have told you that in the rules when you started.
Anyway, good luck.

im sure your local paper would be interested in this little story as well...what a ****yass person...rather food dumped...maybe she should consider delivering them to a local shelter...maybe someone will prompt her to do so when everybody finds out
david...you already know how i feel (see pm)...

You know I Love u hun.:xoxo:

David, I'm with the others. That's BS. As a matter of fact, knowing people that worked for fast food restaurants, at the end of the night all the leftover food was up for grabs. Smells fishy to me...whatever Nikki says, I second...

were you issued a handbook, or a policy book, or was that instruction on daysend food ever told to you or is written somewhere?

stargazer99 01-31-2006 03:19 PM

I'm so sorry, David. That is really crappy of them. I think that's a good idea to take it to the local news.

And I'm sure you'll find something better soon! :xoxo:

ragandbone 01-31-2006 03:21 PM

I am really sorry to hear this, David!
You know what though, no person should have to work for a food service establishment that monitors its employees on video. Video should be for the safety of employees, not for spying.
File for unemployment, and look for a job where you will be respected.

Well, it does say that you must pay for what you eat, but I didnt think that included wasted food. The thing is, she says she watches the video everyday, and back a couple months ago, this other lady that works there and I would share hot dogs at the end of the night and nothing happened then? If you asked me the fish stinks from the head up.

Don't you worry David. Things will work out and yes by all means get started on unemployment benefits. Do it today...relax in the thought that you can have some income come in. Hopefully you can do it online or by phone and get it rolling. Here in CA, it can be done quickly and easily online.

DavidMn 01-31-2006 03:23 PM

All the support from everyone is not taken for granted by me. It touches me to know that people do still care, and I would do the same for anyone else here. I love this place.

Nothing. Dont get me started on her. I told my manager about that, and she responded by saying that the video for those days is already been used again. So she's off the hook, and of course when the manage asked if she did thisd, she denied it. Guess what though, she'el get hers.

I am actually going to do that omorrow or the next day. I just need a day or 2 to adjust to this.

DavidMn 01-31-2006 03:29 PM

Oh and I didnt mention this. WHen I brought my uniform in, I got a little upset and said "How could you do this. I was loyal to you. The manager was on the phone with the area supervisor and she overheard me and told my manager that I was banned from the store and they were going to send me a letter to that effect.

Cold sons o' b*tches. This is unbelievable. God forbid you have an opinion about being fired. File for unemployment, go to Google and put in your city and unemployement to see how to do it. I agree that your paper may be interested in this. Also, why the hell would you want to go there anyway after they fired you? You wouldn't grace them with your presence anyway!

GypsySorcerer 01-31-2006 03:46 PM

I'm sorry David. It sounds very, very fishy to me. I hope everything works out for the best, and I hope something good comes along your way.

ryan8472 01-31-2006 04:12 PM

God, David! Fired for eating a ****ing hot dog?! WTF?!

I'm so sorry that they did that to you. But everything will be fine. Get a job with some nicer people. :xoxo:

Well, I was just bringing back my uniform and stuff. Hey, maybe I'll end up in Guantanamo for making "terroristic threats."

employers can be such Nazis! I'm sorry you have to deal with their crap! I once quit a job at an insurance company...and after my "exit interview" (i was told to being all my personal items with me), I was "escorted" from the building by security, and disallowed to even go to the area I just left to say good-bye to anyone! I can't believe that they're making such a big deal over a hot dog! thank god you didn't take a pen!

jannieC 01-31-2006 04:41 PM

David, this is so insane. I'm so sorry! I'm not sure if you can collect unemployment if you've been fired for "theft" :sorry: , but do try anyway. I'm concerned that they didn't want to give you a raise or whatever, so they fired you for something you may not be able to collect unemployment for. I hope I'm wrong! You're so mild mannered on sweet on this board, I can't even imagine you being banned. You'll find something soon with an employer who will appreciate you.:xoxo:

golddustwoman77 01-31-2006 04:43 PM

I'm very :sorry: to hear this. It is totally crazy to fired you for that! I'm sure that an even better opportunity will come along. Keep your head up and remember "when one door closes, another one opens." Good luck, David.

Wow, thank you for those kind words.:xoxo: And yes, I have been fired for that before, a place I once worked at about 10 years ago closed, but convienently I was let go about 5 days before they shut down for "Stealing" cigarettes, even though I dont smoke...

bretonbanquet 01-31-2006 06:46 PM

Sorry to hear about this - but it's the same the world over, I reckon. I've been fired three times from jobs for no reason (I know that sounds unlikely but it's true) - it just suits some employers to screw you over and they don't have the moral fibre to tell you straight that they're screwing you over. They prefer to make out that you broke a rule or something.

One time I was fired because a colleague (who had been top earner till I arrived) told the boss I said rude things about the boss's daughter... I never even met her...

Another time I was a van driver and I was given a van that was nowhere near roadworthy - I complained and said I'd take it down to the police station if I had to drive it - so I got fired instead.

Another time I was working at the Post Office as a temporary Xmas worker, and out of nowhere they accused me of stealing mail  I mean, Jeeeesus. I asked them to prove it, I invited them to look in my car, my bag etc, but no - I was fired, and they didn't have to prove anything because I was only a temporary worker. I had no idea why they sprung that on me, and that hurt a bit to be honest, as I guess you are hurting right now.

Some employers are just barely human - but at least it shows us how much further up the evolutionary scale the rest of us are

Serrart 01-31-2006 07:04 PM

David, she's an idiot, why couldn't you eat that hot dog? That's ridiculous, the woman needs an electroshock. I'm sure you'll find another job soon.

i am soooo sorry to hear of this david, i pray & wish it is a blessing in disguise for you!!!~ & good luck w/ any endeavors!!!:xoxo: ~

WelshWitchPMD 01-31-2006 08:04 PM

I am so sorry to hear this David. The whole thing does sound fishy to me. She looks at the videotape everyday? Never saw the other lady on the tape eating a hot dog? Sounds like a friend or relative might have needed a job so they had to create a position or something.
Hopefully you can get some kind of unemployment and even better yet get a job where you are treated nicely.

Serendipity 01-31-2006 08:23 PM

Damn. David, I'm so sorry. Hope youre doing ok anyways. I know in my place of work people have got displined for eating waste food (bread/cake) which seems so dumb, cos its only going in the bin! But fired? No.

Hang in there, theres something bigger and better and just all out nicer for you waiting in the world.

It could just be because of liability if you were to get sick. But being fired for it is extreme.

Pattie, I think your theory may prove true. I also think David that you will find something better, who wants to work for people like that anyway? Not all companies are run that way but unfortunately too many are.

elie 02-01-2006 09:06 AM

David:wavey: , I am so sorry to hear about the incident - getting fired is a very, very unpleasant experience.:( I hope you will find something new soon :)
However, like everybody else says, the whole story sounds strange. Why wouldn't they allow people to eat stuff that are going to be thrown away?? It doesn't make sense. And even if it was not allowed, and you didn't know, why on earth would they just fire you without giving you a second chance or warning or whatever? I mean, you have to know that there is a rule in order to break it, you didn't know, so it was not, at least entirely, your fault..After all, in law there is something called " good faith"..
Maybe they wanted to hire a relative or something..
Anyway, take care and I 'm sure you'll find a place with nicer employers..
