Casablanca or Gone With The Wind?

Out of the two classic drama/romance movies which one is your personal favorite?

For me, it is Gone With the Wind, no contest! I just love that movie so much. It is my personal favorite movie of all time.

The reason I am asking such a question is because I just started my movie appreciation class this semester. So, I have become a little movie obsessed lately.

Lala 01-13-2006 05:06 PM

I was really obsessed with Gone With the Wind for a long time when I was younger. It was once on my life of top favourite movies, but I took it off recently. I dunno, they're both good. I'd be more likely to get through the entire Casablanca right now cuz GWTW in long. I haven't seen the whole thing in years. Other than that, it's pretty hard to choose between them. They're classics!

DavidMn 01-13-2006 05:24 PM

I would have to say Gone With The Wind.

JazmenFlowers 01-13-2006 05:31 PM

frankly, I don't give a damn...

I kid, I kid.

Gone With The Wind for sure.

Well being from Georgia, I'd have to say Gone With The Wind. One of my mottos: "After all, tomorrow is another day."

Neither. Howzabout "All About Eve"? Or "The Women"? Those two are much better choices.

When did you drop the "topher" off your name, bubbaleh?

diamondsnake 01-13-2006 05:39 PM

I agree with everyone, Gone With the Wind for sure. For some reason, I just don't like Casablanca. I always get upset when Casablanca is ranked better than Gone With the Wind on those "Best Movies of All Time" lists.

For our first class this week we watched Casablanca, which was our teacher's idea of the best American film of all time. I just can't connect with the characters in that movie the way I can with Scarlett, Rhett and Melanie.

diamondsnake 01-13-2006 05:44 PM

Well I just said GWTW and Casablanca because well... I've seen both of those several times. I haven't seen either of the movies you mentioned but I will be viewing them soon since it's a requirement for the class. I'm excited to watch All About Eve because I've heard that is a great movie....

I dropped the topher because I go by Chris in real life. I don't knnow why I wrote Christopher in my signature for so long though.

Isn't Citizen Kane usually ranked #1 on most lists of best movie of all time. If you dont know, dont worry about it.:)

Yup, Kane is normally number one. Casablanca is normally number two and Gone with the Wind is normally somehwere around number eight or nine.

I know one of the first 2 Godfather or maybe both are in the top ten too.

mylittledemon 01-13-2006 06:03 PM

Casablanca all the way. A true classic. I remember watching Gone With the Wind in my high school English class one year, and I laughed when the girl fell off the horse. My teacher got mad and made me sit outside in the hall.

It's already been remade once...1956 I believe..."The Opposite Sex", which was wonderful IMO!

I would dread seeing what they did to it now though....:distress:

I thought it was painful. Nearly unwatchable because it was such a mess.

The recent stage adaptation was quite good, even if it was silly to film it, but a movie? No thanks.

Ha Ha, I think this is probably a frequent occurance in class showings of that movie. My class watched that in eigth grade, and we thought it was hilarious too.

Anyways, I love GWTW. I have read the book twice, watched the film maybe ten times, and I have a book about the making of the film called "Scarlett, Rhett, and a Cast of Thousands."

Stage adaptation??  It was originally a Clare Booth play. It starred Marjorie Main & Ilka Chase (the lady who played Charlotte's sister in "Now Voyager") when it ran on Broadway.

Wasn't Ms. Rue in that production?

Yes. It came off pretty badly if you ask me because the performances were over the top theater performances. It looked silly on television, though I'm sure it was quite good live.

Really ? there was talk of a remake in the mid 1990's with Meg Ryan.Julia Roberts and inexplicably my beloved Jodie attached.Thankfully it never went into production as I hope this one doesn't.The 1939 version cannot be topped.

Lemme guess....

Julia Roberts is taking over from Joan Crawford as Crystal Allen.
Cameron Diaz is taking over from Norma Shearer as Mrs. Stephen Haines.
Jennifer Aniston is taking over from Rosalind Russell as Mrs. Howard Fowler.
Sandra Bullock is taking over from Paulette Goddard as Miriam Aarons.

and

Dakota Fanning is playing (puke) Little Mary Haines.

Introducing Star Jones in the role of the Countess DeLave taking over from Mary Boland. "Ah, l'amour, l'amour..."

No, Dakota Fanning will be too busy starring in remake number two of "Lolita."

I just googled it and Meg Ryan and Sandra Bullock are the ones attached to it.I guess Meg can't give up the idea of tampering with a classic. With her new cheek implants and trout lips maybe a Fish Called Wanda would be a more appropriate remake for her .

GODDESS6 01-13-2006 08:52 PM

"gone with the wind"~

Patti 01-14-2006 11:58 AM

Hands down, Gone With the Wind, my favorite movie of all time. Clark Gable is yummy!

Janet 01-14-2006 02:00 PM

GWTW, it just changed my life in so many ways when I saw that. I never knew romance could be that vast and that dramatic and beautiful. I was like 12 and it blew me away.

LOVE it.

Casablanca...it's a beautiful film but it just hasn't the punch that GWTW has!

OMG! You got to watch that in school?! Not fair. LOL

We watched in school too. Back in Junior High. It took a week and a half to get through the movie! That was an easy week in Engligh class!

Lee 01-15-2006 02:17 PM

While I really like them both, I'm going to pick Gone With the Wind. Casablanca is a real heavy drama with some action, while Gone With the Wind has drama, comedy & action all rolled into one. I know it is really long, but this is necessary for the movie, to tell the complete story. When watching it, I found myself laughing at Scarlett & sometimes, you just have to have a good laugh now & then. And Humphrey Bogart is probably my favorite actor though; I've even named my toy poodle, Bogart, after him.

Lee :)

CelticGypsy 01-15-2006 04:54 PM

Frankly, Scarlett, I don't give a damn:lol:

I love Vivien Leigh and Clark Gable in "Gone With the Wind."

I loved Carol Burnett's version too. The skit where Scarlett makes a gown out of the green drapes and the curtain rod is still attached at shoulders:laugh:    Now that is a classic.

Dark Angel 01-16-2006 05:22 PM

Definitely GWTW for me. I've been addicted to it since I first saw it when I was around 15.

Serrart 01-16-2006 06:09 PM

Casablanca, because it's a sharp, unforgiving melo, that put the basis for every future movie triangle.

I like a lot GWTW but I would have preferred the baroque and dark element in George Cukor's hands.

Romy

GypsySorcerer 01-16-2006 06:37 PM

I enjoy both in different ways. Casablanca is the better film, IMO; GWTW is more iconic.

Fiddle dee dee Melanie!!!

Well, frankly my dear I DO give a damn, so.. GWTW is THE BEST!!!!!!!!!!!

but "I won't think about this now. I'll think about it tomorrow" (how many times she said this phrase in the movie? Interesting it was in whole different situations...)

Interesting.. we will never know if it would have been that success, if Cukor had finished the movie.

Claudia 01-17-2006 03:35 PM

'Casablanca'!

Both are great movies, but, although 'Gone With The Wind' is a wonderful show, full of great performances, beautiful sets and amazing wardrobes, I can never really like any any of the characters enough to really care about what happens to them. 'Casablanca' on the other hand brought tears to my eyes.

I'm with you. GWtW is too out there to really identify with it.
