Artists or vocalists? I guess it doesn't matter but my list would probably be ordered differently if it was just going by vocals. Don Henley would be ahead of Lindsey (gasp!) and Tom Petty would be somewhere near the end. But anyway. Overall:

1. Lindsey (constant)
2. Tom Petty (pretty much in order from here on out)
3. Don Henley
4. Jackson Browne

7. Bob Dylan
8. John Denver
9. Freddie Mercury
10. Bono

Honorable mention:

Elliott Smith
Joseph Arthur
Anthony Keadis (RHCP)
Cat Stevens
Iron & Wine
Alex Kapranos (Franz Ferdinand)
Johnny Cash
Elton John
Sting
Micheal Stipe (REM)

and because Christy put him first, I'll admit it - A.J. McLean :p.

Nico 01-02-2006 05:19 PM

Thom Yorke is the tops for me here. By far.

The, of course, John Lennon. I went through these two pages and was kinda shocked that John wasn't mentioned more than he was. In my opinion, he had one of- if not the- greatest voices in rock and roll. Just incomparable.

Others, no order: Jeff Buckley, Johnny Cash, Ray Charles, Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, Paul McCartney, Leonard Cohen, Art Garfunkel, Freddie Mercury, Nick Drake, Roy Orbison, Rufus Wainwright, Bruce Springsteen,Bryan Ferry, James Blunt, Sting, George Harrison, James Brown, Lindsey!!!! and Luciano (hey, why not? I like nice Italian opera stuff now and then).

I have forgotten a lot of people, but this will do for now.

I *kind of* think Don Henley's voice is nice, but his music is too nauseating for me to place him up there...which is why I have mentioned him here. And I like Neil Diamond's voice all right, and his new album, but the older stuff? Uh, no.

sparky 01-02-2006 05:22 PM

Mmmn. Fun.

Clint Black (so much fun to harmonize with, right in Sparky range)
Chris Cornell (yeah he oversings sometimes, but when he is on, it is nuclear)
Layne Staley
Roy Orbison
Jon Bon Jovi
Dwight Yoakam (such a sweet twangy edge)
Burton Cummings (if only for the classic "These Eyes")
George Michael (the ballads, *swoon* "Kissing a Fool", "Cowboys and Angels" *triple swoon* he's as butch as a feather boa but melts my heart )
Michael Hutchence (vocally, sex on a stick, this guy)
Geoff Tate (of Queensryche...so underrrated, in his prime this guy could blow the roof off a place without a mic with no break in his falsetto...doesn't even sound like a head voice)

Listening to his voice on "Shopping For Blood" gives me an erection. One of the best Franz songs, too.

Some people said he actually was born in France, but he is "uruguayo" in any case, and grew up in Argentina, that's why he sang Mi Buenos Aires querido...

And he died in a plan crash just taking off from Colombia during a tour

Villavic 01-02-2006 06:16 PM

ok, you asked for vocalists, guistarist or composers, so I think in the voice or the feeling when they sing:

Freddie Mercury
Seal
Barry White
Don Henley
David Gilmour
Bryan Adams
Elton John
Nat King Cole
Ray Charles
the 3 bee gees when they sang together...,

Sorry Lindsey (and Sting and Bono and Elvis)..

Lee 01-02-2006 06:25 PM

Yeah, I agree with most of the names on everyone's list, but I have to mention Noah Hunt, of the Kenny Wayne Shepherd band. He's a very talented singer & songwriter.

Yes, Montand is a whole experience as a singer, and also as an actor; I'm a huge fan of his.

I remember when the "Rushmore" soundtrack was very popular and a few of my friends were into it because of Elliot Smith's song. And one of Montand's songs is on it, and they were really surprised at how...dramatic his sound was. I think they were impressed. My mom is a really big fan of his, so I was into his music at a younger age (though not aware of who the hell he was back then).

He's a great actor as well. And Marilyn Monroe was totally in awe of him to top it all.

xdreamsunwindx 01-02-2006 07:23 PM

Lee 01-02-2006 07:39 PM

Jeez, how could I forget Daryl Hall & John Oates? Oh yeah, they rank up there with me. I've seen them so many times. And I like Scott Stapp, too. And add Michael McDonald. It's hard for me to compose a list though & then put them in order.

Ahhh....the men...

My favorite male singer is the man with a thousand voices, Robin Zander ...he has, without a doubt, such a magnificent voice...I never, never, never tire of listening to him.

Tom Petty is fabulous because he is so distinct...kinda like Stevie in a way, because when he is singing, you KNOW it's Tom...and, in my home, Tom is king...I dont think a day goes by when he isn't played. Love that man.
Also, can there be a better band than the Heartbreakers??? :xoxo:

There are some tracks where George Michael can turn me on like no other...and, in that same vein, so can Michael McDonald...but it really depends on the song...

Charlie Sexton does it for me every time...always has...he is just the dirt to me...he is so incredibly talented...

The late Layne Staley (Alice In Chains) vocals always moved me just in the same way that Scott Weiland can...incredible pipes, those boys...

Michael Stipe gets props cause he is like a female Patti Smith to me...very emotional, very to the core...gotta love Michael...

John Lennon, Neil Young, Bob Dylan and Frank Sinatra simply because they were voices of a generation at various peaks and valleys within the last 50 years of pop music...

Of course, Lindsey Buckingham...what can I say? I love the man....

Last, but certainly not least, Joey Ramone had such a distinct vocal style and he was one hell of a sweet guy to me and everyone that I ever introduced to him, and I think I sing the loudest when the Ramones are on, so he certainly has a place on my list...Gabba Gabba Hey!
