Red Rocks video

I like it when, during No Spoken Word, she sings:

"I don't know how to learn it,
not from the pages of that
@#$%@#$ BOOK!"

I don't think Jana would've approved had she been in the band back then.

It's rare to hear Stevie swear... at least in her songs. So, hearing FJKld;dfjklfjd;sGODDAMNfjdklafs****ingBOOK
makes me laugh (and rock, ha ha) a little.

Well, there are some that swear she's not cussing at ALL - but I think she is - I clearly hear the GD and the MF.

Of course, there's NO disputing the cussing during the incident with security (If you f*ck with my people...) Where was that again? Somewhere on the east coast. Hartford?

Lake Compounce in Bristol, CT. That was one ****ty ass venue if you ask me.

I don't hear her swearing in "No Spoken Word." I hear her screaming "And not not not not from a book" with that wild voice she had back then.

krrrby 12-22-2005 09:14 PM

well I tried to put a pic on here...but its not working LOL

I can't even count how many times I've watched this video and have never noticed this.

I think it's a combination of both. I clearly hear the "goddamn", too. *shrug*

David 12-23-2005 01:35 AM

Why not listen to other RAL performances of No Spoken Word, too? Chances are that if she was letting it hang at that point in the song for Red Rocks, she would have done something similar at other venues before & after.

Personally, I don't specifically recall any cuss words in No Spoken Word from other shows, but they might be there.

Even things that sound totally unique & spontaneous were often repeated, at least a few other times, back then, just like today. Example: the speaking in tongues deal from L.A. in '82 also happened here & there elsewhere on the tour.

SpyNote 12-23-2005 01:50 AM

Here's another example (at 2:36)... I hear something, but I don't think she's cussing.

No Spoken Word, 7.21.86

That's what I hear, too.

And it just seems like a stretch that the same woman who was uptight about singing the word "bitch" in a song, would say "g-damn" and "motherf***er" in the middle of a song as she's being filmed for a video.

Livia 12-23-2005 10:20 AM

No fiasco for "bitch." Simply the song, "Sometimes It's a Bitch."

DashingDan 12-23-2005 01:01 PM

Times they are a-changing...

Way way way waaaaay back when, around 1996 or so, there was a stevie nicks email list that I belonged to and I posted the same post (without the jana comment, of course) as i did at the top of this thread and, believe me, if I didn't get some of the angriest emails from people who were so offended that I would suggest such a thing. People were really angry, some sent me personal emails asking me why I would ruin the list with my comments...

This group is much more fun and lively.

Well, let's see - Klonopin for Sometime's It's a Bitch - but seeing as that was the title of the song, and not an impromptu rant during a live show, I don't see where you're going w/ the comparison of that to a coked-out-of-her-gourd Red Rocks performance.

Same here.

Anyone translated what she sings during Edge of Seventeen on Red Rocks, when she's crouched down on the floor?

That's what really puzzles me....

Drugs, drugs, drugs. It's always drugs. What, Stevie didn't do anything interesting that wasn't a result of being high?

Goofy, goofy, goofy ....

This has happened on every forum since the beginning of the internet, even here. It's usually an isolated incident which gets blown way out of proportion that causes people to harbor long-term grudges. I've always thought it is silly to get worked up over anything posted online, especially if you've never met the person with whom you've disagreed, and had a real face-to-face conversation.

krrrby 12-23-2005 07:52 PM

OK guys call me crazy, but I did a little investigation...

I went to windows media player, picked up no spoken word from red rocks
I went to:
- View
- Enhancements
- Play Speed Settings

I took the bar and moved it to 0.5

I played no spoken word about 20 times (for me its on 2:10) on the supposed "cussing part"
and this is what I made out of it

"not from the pages from the long god damn dang stupid book"
try that and tell me what you think

Edit: If you don't have this song on your computer, go to my site and download it (click on Red Rocks)

Johnny Stew 12-24-2005 12:09 AM

Here's another question... with as heavily overdubbed as 'Red Rocks' apparently is (I can't say for sure myself, because I've never had a chance to hear the audience bootleg that is supposedly from the same performance), why wouldn't they sanitize a string of obscenities uttered during the middle of a song in the process of recording all of the other overdubs?
Or, if "No Spoken Word" was overdubbed, why would she spout a string of obscenities in the recording studio?

Don't get me wrong, my world wouldn't crumble if Stevie is swearing there. I can cuss a blue streak from time to time myself, so it'd be hypocritical of me to have a problem with Stevie doing the same.
I just don't hear it.

And let's not forget the one documentary (www.allwearesaying.com), where she says "I do not want to be a half-ass rockstar and a half-assed mother"

It's not necessarily her first time, and I don't really give a rip if she does or not myself...but other ppl just seem to be like -GASP-

I just broke out the audience boot of Red Rocks and I still maintain she let fly with the "F" word. At least that's what it sounds like to me.

Dark Angel 12-24-2005 06:22 PM

I decided to play around with the 'uncut' version in Audition (slowed it down and amped it). She's not cussing. For years I thought she was.
This is what I got:

I don't know how to learn it
Not from the pages
Well not that that that...well
From a book

gold_dustgypsy 12-27-2005 12:04 AM

Actually Dark Angel... you might be right!!

Sahara 12-28-2005 01:01 PM

Pulled out my copy of Red Rocks today and had a hard listen ...

I can't tell you what she IS saying. But she's not swearing as far as I can hear.

this is EXACTLY what I've always thought too. it's just rambling, but I don't hear any swearing.

not that I'd mind - I like seeing/hearing that part of Stevie myself.

pwyll 12-29-2005 02:30 AM

I don't think she is cursing in the song. She just stumbles on the words and says..."no no no no not from a..not from a book". ..She was a mess, but I hear no cursing.

sparky 12-29-2005 02:36 AM

I have always thought she tossed a GD and Mofo in there about the book. Always made me laugh.

GD ...... maaaybe. But nothing else.

Sahara 12-29-2005 07:26 PM

By the way ... is it just me or does anyone else notice something fishy in this lyric?

"I need to know
And if you say you're gonna leave then you'd better say so"

Or am I just missing something?

It's supposed to be, "If you think you're gonna leave, then you better say so," but Stevie's sung it incorrectly for years.

I try to pretend it doesn't annoy me.
