is this a repeat? cause I have seen something like it already...

it depressed me...so I changed the station. :sorry:  :D

Where is thios thing supposed to hit?

SuzeQuze 12-19-2005 05:47 PM

How do we survive? Will throwing on a life vest and making sure my kayak is blown up help? If a tsunami hit I really doubt I would survive it. If there is some way to prepare for it then maybe I might!

When the shaking starts, head for the hills.

when the drawdown occurs, head for the hills.

Use your noggin & do not live by the law of the belly, & you WILL survive.

SteveMacD 12-19-2005 07:19 PM

Well, YOU could be next, but I live in Ohio, and I don't think that the Ohio River is big enough to produce a Tsunami.

Can't think of a single hill nearby, guess I should do some research!

Where do you live, SuzeQuze? I will help you. I want you to survive ... not just survive but flourish ... not just flourish but prosper like the Green Bay Tree.

You're only in any danger if you live within about a mile of the shoreline in most circumstances.

Gravity is gravity under your Ohio River or under the Pacific Ocean. Fluid mechanics is fluid mechanics everywhere on the surface of the earth. If the water column is upset, gravity will compel it to reseek equilibrium.

The shallow depth of your river will reduce the velocity of tsunami & the wavelength, in this case, greatly. To qualify as a tsunami in your river, the depth of the river must be less than one-half the wavelength of the tsunami. A tsunami is first & foremost a shallow-water wave.

If you give me the average depth of your river, we can compute the speed of a tsunami traveling through it, which will be equal to the square root of the acceleration of gravity times the water depth.

Which shoreline do you live on or near, JimmyAlice? You may be a lot safer than some of my friends in Puget Sound.

I'm a few blocks from Puget Sound and i know my first instinct after an earthquake will be to run down to the waterfront, I just know it!!

You smartaleck. The thing about an M9 megathrust quake from a subduction zone 50 miles off your coastline is that you won't be running anywhere at that point. You'll be lying flat on your back or your stomach on the pavement wondering why you can't stand up, as compressional waves undulate through the streets all around you for six solid minutes or longer, bringing earthquake-coded structures tumbling down & distorting your lines of sight.

all the ****ers will be dead or dying...

so, who really cares?

If it happens, it happens...If we die...we die! End of story...

on edit: I was just reading over this again...and wow...how negative was that!...

But the point is...if something SO large hits...how could anyone really be READY?

oh dear.... i thought i would come poke around on the ledge for a bit as a study break from physics (final exam 8:30am tomorrow!) only to find myself reading about physics! baaaaahhh!

You'll be fine. Don't worry.

I'm actually not one to worry about natural disasters but I think some planning for them doesn't hurt! If its my time then its my time, not much I can do about it. But there are some precautions one can take! After New Orleans I know no one is coming if something does happen.

If Noah took two of every animal on the ark with him, then what did they eat?

That got me thinking, Dissy.

Also, what do you think about the hydroplate theory of Dr. Walt Brown?
