Fleetwood Mac Live

How come nobody (except me?) has praised the saints that today is the 25th anniversary of the release of "Fleetwood Mac Live"?

I remember the night before its release I was so excited to finally hear what they sounded like in concert. I couldn't image how a band with only four instruments could replicate the layered, carefully crafted music that I obsessed over. That night I stayed up late (midnight was late for me when I was barely out of middle school.) A local radio station played the entire album. I was transfixed. The live songs didn't just like the studio versions, but they just as good, only different.

I still love that album -even now having the awarenes that they did polish it up a bit in the studio. It still has a rock and roll grit that The Dance lacks. All the new/rare stuff was great! Fireflies, One More Night, Oh Well, Farmer's Daughter and Don't Let Me Down Again.

Oh Well got a lot of radio air play in Massachusetts. Fleetwood Mac was my secret love for a long time, because they were seen by many as being very MOR wimpy compared to the obvious hard rockers of that time. I relished in the fact that Oh Well opened the eyes of many friends who payed no attention to them. "What? That's Fleetwood Mac?" was a typical reaction.

i still remember when it came out
i was an obsessed fan...

can't believe it was that long ago.

David - my memories of me and my high school girlfriend and her parents smoking Mary Jane to this are vivid if not lambent - thank you for reminding me!!!!! Her voice on Landslide is haunting to say the least.

Richard B 12-09-2005 03:15 AM

I do have the big love for this album. Nothing much to say about it other than it's one of my favorite albums by them. The cover rocks and it's a gorgeous gatefold LP. I listen to this frequently.

goldie 12-09-2005 04:47 AM

I DO love this album. Especially Rhiannon & Sara. Monday Morning, Over & Over ......

Probably my fav. version of Landslide!

This is for you London...

although it took me a while to realize what she was saying, there...

Happy (Belated) Birthday Live album! :p :woohoo:

I listen to at least some of this album every day. It's super. :D

Lala 12-09-2005 05:05 PM

I tracked a vinyl copy of this down a few months ago at record store called 'Hot Wax' :D

I sat and listened to it the next day and was blown away. Unfortunately, my record player is dead so I haven't been able to listen to it since. Oh well...I think I'm getting a new one for Christmas.

I love the versions of Sara and Over & Over especially although the whole thing rocks.

jbrownsjr 12-09-2005 05:09 PM

I always wondered (as a kid) why Tusk wasn't on this. Then I heard Tusk live and understood.

I love Monday Morning (the album used to punch my speakers so well)
Say You Love Me
Dreams (nice raw stripped down vocals) the way it should be
Rhiannon (wow what a great take, she blows me away on this one)
Not That Funny (awesome)
I'm So Afraid (blockbuster performance of organ, bass drums, and incredible guitar solo)

the only way to listen to this album is LOUD

I don't like Sara (zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz) lacks backing vocals and sort of drags along.

The actual St. Louis (?) bootleg is better than what ends up on the LIVE album b/c it's not edited. The guitar is gorgeous. But you still might not like it since you think it drags on. That's okay. I think I've made it clear how obsessed I am with this song.

golddustwoman77 12-09-2005 06:31 PM

I got nothin' but love for it, David! :p

That is such a great show. Even though they are quite obviously high. :p  And you're right about Sara.

As for the Live album, I just have five words that summarize it for me: Don't Let Me Down Again. :D

I have to agree. Listen to it with headphones on...there is just something about Stevie whispering into your ears. ;)

I love this album. Happy (belated) anniversary. :xoxo:

I love this set myself. I wish they would remaster the 1979 St. Louis show and release that. Lord knows the source material on that must have been pretty good what with the documentary and all. I love "The Chain" and "Sisters of the Moon" from that show!

So true. I wish they'd do something like that too. Kinda like how The Grateful Dead release 'Dick's Picks'. I'm sure there's some great Mac shows we haven't even heard yet.

Yes, what a day that was. I remember as an 9 year old getting that album for Christmas that year:nod:

Happy birthday to the '80 live album! There are definitely some good cuts on there. Without "One More Night," it would be nearly perfect. :p

It's one of the best versions out there, IMO. And recorded in Paris (supposedly) if I remember correctly.

I think it's in one of Mick's books, not sure which one though

SteveMacD 12-11-2005 05:15 PM

Hell, the band didn't celebrate the album's intial release. Why start now? It's always been the one child nobody wants to acknowledge. It's the child that is fed an exclusive diet of fish heads and water, while being locked in the attic for all of it's miserable life.

Although, I happen to really like it.

So was this more of a record company push than a band idea to do this then?

If I recall correctly, I think Mick was the only one in the band that really wanted the live album to happen.
He needed more money to blow through(pun intended).

SteveMacD 12-11-2005 05:35 PM

I think Mick wanted to follow the trend of releasing a live album of greatest hits. Everybody else seemed pretty luke warm to the idea.

Yeah I think that's what he said in his book. Whatever, we're lucky somebody cared even if his motive was a little gold dust.

I LOVE Live. I've never understood why it wasn't more popular.

no, u might be right, there's versions of this i really like
i love the studio version :)

shackin'up 12-12-2005 07:53 AM

december 5, 1980, it became available in my hometown. I remember that day like yesterday. months of anticipation. I was eager to hear it, because my parents did not let me go to the concert in rotterdam that summer. (I was 14 and lived in a small town on the other side of the Netherlands.) It was the biggest "trauma" of my youth: it was the last time I was able to see SN and LB together until my flight to dallas in 2003.

Al those years "live" was my companion, along with Tusk. Those two became the soundtrack of my life.

I don't love that album, I breathe it. Every friggin second of it.

Thanks! :wavey: Well, back in those days, I used to take pictures of FM members jamming, now I'm showing them to the world ;)

Edit: this is a joke. But it's indeed a cool pic!

You got that right. It's one of the saddest songs ever recorded imo. I love it.

Mick actually wanted to release a live album between Rumours & Tusk to buy time because Tusk was taking so long (in the eyes of the record company). In retrospect, that might've not been a bad idea*. It would've been more "timely" in regards to the trend of releasing two-LP live albums...by 1980, the trend was starting to wane. Also, after Tusk raised the going rate for double albums, the Live album wasn't all that much of a bargain as it would've been had it been released a year & half earlier.

*But, on the other hand, the live album would've been mostly the "white album" and Rumours tunes on the heels of those two albums' success would've just been a live redundancy. (which is probably what Lindsey's argument against a live album, at that point, would have been)

Although if they'd included some of those 75 performances of the older stuff...

What's sort of weird is that they did include one track that was more than likely from 1975 -- & sort of a weird choice, too.

At any rate, I'm a fan of the "Live" album -- especially of its artwork & design motif. There was something "Tusk" about the use of the old newspaper font typeface on plain white backgrounds, & the front cover photo is a perfect symbolic representation of the band as seen (weirdly, from both the rear & the front) through the eyes of a stoned fan. The front photo is a deconstruction of both time (motion is irrespective of real time) & space (you see audience but you also see some bandmembers facing you & other bandmembers facing the other direction -- you really don't know where you are).

The track list is also daring, especially after a big expensive studio album that relatively disappointed in the sales department: no "Chain" for example but fifteen minutes of new material. All the photos used come from the Tusk Tour, as far as I can tell. But don't believe the liner notes written for the CD release: they take wild stabs at a few aspects & hit wide of the mark at least twice.
