Working on Thanksgiving

I just started my job at the hospital about two weeks ago. There really arent any people my age. I work with older people. Well since I was the newbie no one (even my boss) said that there was a sheet to sign up for holidays. They just told me yesterday.....I have to work 12-6 on Thanksgiving :(

But hey it was either Thanksgiving or Christmas....

Still I am a sad panda.......

Hey Panda,

Hopefully you'll be paid double time. I always did when working Thanksgiving. Plus you're off @ 6...not too late to still enjoy.

Do you want me to save you some turkey or my famous homemade cranberry sauce...yum! sorry, but think of all the ones that need your help...I would do the same. just think, when you reach the gates of heaven, st. peter's gonna let you in. make sure you bring your cd player and listen to alice. HAPPY THANKSGIVING!:xoxo:

GypsySorcerer 11-21-2005 06:41 PM

Aw, I'm sorry, Jimmy. :xoxo: But just think, Christmas is right around the corner!

jannieC 11-21-2005 06:55 PM

You'll be glad once Christmas rolls around. Hope it's not too bad for you and as I said in another thread to Curtis, there *are* people who appreciate you working the holidays. :xoxo:

WelshWitchPMD 11-21-2005 07:19 PM

Aww, I am sorry Jimmy. Just make sure that your family saves some dinner for you. Do you get paid time and a half? If you do then that is a bright side and if not at least you have a job that you seem to like.

Beachwood Mac 11-21-2005 07:30 PM

Sorry Jimmy. Maybe you will have the same luck I did the one year I had to work Thanksgiving. When I was in college I worked the front desk at a high rise resort condominium in Coronado, California. There were 18 floors and about 10 condos on each floor. Everyone, and I mean everyone, felt sorry for me and I had more food brought down to me than I could have possibly eaten in a month. I never wanted to see another piece of pumpkin pie in my life! Have a great Thanksgiving anyway!

Terry

Sorry about your luck Jimmy. I'd rather have Christmas Day off myself...oh well...at least you're not working any longer of a shift.

I have worked EVERY holiday - 12 hour days - for the last 15 years. After awhile, none of them have any meaning anymore. You find you are more interested in napping then turkey at the end of the day.

sara1998 11-21-2005 09:15 PM

I used to have to work Thanksgiving and Christmas, and every other damn holiday you could think of when I worked as an operator in the control room. The process at work just cannot be shut down for one day, so if it was our day in, we had to work. I'm real sorry you have to work, Jimmy... I know your pain, buddy.

ontheEdgeof17 11-21-2005 09:21 PM

I feel your pain. :distress:

Wed night I work 11p-7a....Thursday night, I work 7p-7a. No turkey day for me.

Sorry, Jimmy! That sucks! At least you're getting well-paid, though. Hopefully, you can still enjoy the evening after you get off work.

Yes I expect a nice big plate when I come home! :D

DavidMn 11-22-2005 03:36 PM

I have the day off this year, thankfully.

skcin 11-22-2005 03:38 PM

I used to request to work Thanksgiving. If I worked 7a-3p, I ate later, if I worked 3p-11p I ate early. And I loved the OT. I don't have the option anymore, though, we're shut down Thurs - Sun.

estranged4life 11-22-2005 03:58 PM

Rather work on Thanksgiving...

than be coming down with bronchitis and/or the flu...Which it appears that I am.

I'll make sure to cough on annoying family members if I have the flu...Love spreading the holiday cheer around

Yeah, i did not have that "choice". Since I am new they didn't tell me about this paper to sign to see what hours I wanted on a holiday. So after all the other people who had to work with me on thanksgiving wrote in the morning shift, they stuck me with the afternoon one.....assholes.

Aw, cheer up, buttercup! They'll get there's at Christmas.

Miss Vicky 11-23-2005 09:18 AM

My office is closed for the holiday and my schedule is such that (for now) I don't work on Fridays or Saturdays. We're always closed Sundays.

I worked Monday and Tuesday and I have to work today, but then I don't go back until next Monday. :woohoo:

Can I work there? Pleeeeasssse? :p

sasja 11-23-2005 02:35 PM

Yes indeed, for all those working thanksgiving... or any holiday really, you ARE appreciated. I used to go see my patients in the mental institutions I worked in on those days even if I wasn't required, just 'cause :D And we'd do fun stuff and I felt much better than if I were wasting my energy on unappreciative, bickering relatives!
