Go Your Own Way Appreciation Thread

Okay, so they just played this song on the radio. I always blast this song from the speakers. I cannot listen to this song without dancing. I mean jumping up and down playing air guitar, imagining I'm at a concert. Picturing Lindsey singing this song to Stevie with such anger (for lack of a better word) back in the 70's. I think this song is one of, if not, the best Fleetwood Mac song ever. Just because everything it represents and it's just such a rocken song. It's the song that the radio stations always play, because "it" is Fleetwood Mac.

I know this has probably been discussed to death, but too bad

Great song and I even love it live. I even liked Lindsey's Soundstage version. Lindsey could do a few more rocking songs IMHO.

I never tire of the album version of GYOW. It will always be one of my favorites.

However, I am becoming bored with the live versions of late. Lindsey's soundstage version was pretty blah to me. :(

Lindsey Jr. 11-19-2005 02:31 PM

The song that started it all for me...

BTFLCHLD 11-19-2005 02:37 PM

i just listened to that on my rumours vinyl
i do love it when lindsey does it live too

Agree. I think the album version of that song and Dreams are the best versions.

I never turn down a hug :)

I love the one on the Soundstage. I have an MP3 of it ...?

I wish he wouldn't screech like that, though.

Can you send it to me? I have not seen Lindsey's Soundstage yet, but after reading the Lindsey thread on it, I am going to find out who sells it here and immediately purchase one.

Always good to know :) You'll love LB's soundstage, some of the songs he did were very good (not to say beautiful).

mylittledemon 11-19-2005 04:28 PM

I would totally agree. Everything about the song is super. The vocals, the lyrics, the arrangement, the guitar solo...even Mick's ripped off drum parts. I think the Rumours version and the version on The Dance are the two best ones.

johndoe 11-19-2005 06:30 PM

This is like the greatest Fleetwood Mac song ever. And I don't think theres anyway it could sound bad, unless lindsey "Big Loves" it.

I love the soundstage version only because of the drums at the very end of the song.

Mirage Tour Video version of GYOW...just plain excellence...Lindsey really nails it...

"Tell me why, EVERYTHING TURNED AROUND...packing up, shacking up's all you wanna do...if I could, BABY I'D *GIVE* *YOU* *MY* *WORRRRLDDD*, open up, everything's waiting for YOU!"

I also enjoy Stevie's part in the last verse. It's my absolute favorite live performance of this song...just wish the last guitar solo was longer.

dontlookdown 11-20-2005 12:34 AM

for some reason, Go Your Own Way has managed to hold it's own over the years - despite ridiculous over playness on the radio. I can't say the same for Don't Stop. But yes, it's a great song. Even people who don't like the band seem to like Go Your Own Way. For me I guess I stopped really listening a long time ago because I know it so well. It's not as interesting as Dreams but it certainly is right up there with the best rock songs ever.

I agree, though the Mirage version is so raw and La Nicks looks so stunning and vulnerable it I just want to cry. They were so on each other that night(s).

She looks gorgeous during that song.

When you do - let me know where? I have looked at Future Shop, Sam the Record Man, and WalMart - no luck.

As for GYOW - I never get tired of it. I always blast it when I hear it on the radio, and it always makes me feel good. I have grown tired of many an overplayed FM and/or SN song, but for some reason, this song endures. A true classic.

Lindsey Jr. 11-20-2005 05:29 AM

And I love the lyrics, because they are so true.

I honestly like the Dance version the best.

danax6 11-20-2005 08:57 AM

I wish they played it more on the radio over here, instead we always get Everywhere. I love GYOW. I do think though that it is one of the few songs that I prefer on the album rather than live. Some live versions come very close though. ;)

What about Best Buy? Has it even been released here? If I find it, I will let you know.

You hit the nail on the head. This song always makes me feel good too

Sounds cool. Dear Mamma is getting me the DVD for Christmas [thanks Mum!], I can't wait to see it ...

If only, IF ONLY he'd left the bloody hat at home ...

ontheEdgeof17 12-01-2005 07:15 PM

Live In Boston is the best version....the ending is to die for.

This song never gets old to me, either. :)

Brwn_eyes0511 12-01-2005 07:17 PM

The Dance version is my absolute fav...

many drunk memories to that one... :woohoo:

It is just a wonderful song...never get tired of it!

chiliD 12-01-2005 07:28 PM

I prefer the original studio version to ANY officially released live version...they seem to file down the edges in post-production. There are a few boots that kick butt...all edgy & ****. Even some bootleg live versions post-Lindsey, with Billy on vocals and Rick just soaring on the end solo are great.

But, even still, nothing does it for me like the original studio version. I still remember the first time I heard it, in October 1976...being behind the wheel of my parents' 1973 Toyota Corolla station wagon driving home from school, cruisin' north on the 405 fwy between Westminster Ave & the 22 fwy merge (going the 55 mph speed limit), when it came on the radio...after a big build-up by the DJ that they were about to debut the new Fleetwood Mac single...by Lindsey's ending solo, I had that little 4-cyl engine whining, and had that station wagon going 85 mph before I knew it.

Just as a side note: My parents finally got rid of that station wagon last summer (when they bought a Toyota Prius)...the odometer never got to 100,000 miles. I think it only had 96,000+ miles on it when they sold it.

Agreed. I'm actually surprised at all the love for the Dance version; I've always been kind of bored by that recording. The studio version is just perfection, though, with Mick's drums all off-kilter, and all those different guitar tracks rising up out of the ether to create that perfect solo.

Yea...but I just have such a hard time hearing that Hammond in the studio version! :o :p

Lala 12-01-2005 08:57 PM

Nothing beats the original. A lot of the live versions of GYOW don't blow me away. Especially the more recent ones. When Lindsey gets to the chorus and has to sing the harmony part, it's a bit of a bummer. Ya know...shows the bands age I guess. The Rosebud version is probably my favorite live version. It's nice to hear what I guess was a bit of a work in progress with the different guitar solo. I'm a sucker for the harmonic guitar solo so it gets me every time.

And may I join the other Canadian Ledgies on a quest to find the Soundstage DVD. Actually my plan was to call HMV and have them special order it for me. They're pretty good for that. I probably won't until after Christmas though. I'm hoping for a great big HMV gift certificate for Christmas. :D

Rosebud is great for many reasons...but it is great to hear all of the "works in progress"!

I love it when they do it live and Stevie sings harmony on "packin' up, shackin' up's all you wanna do!" LOVE IT.

 The Dance version is a bit adult contemporary sounding to me :sorry:.

"GYOW" is one of the song that started my love affair with Fleetwood Mac, along with "Dreams" and "The Chain." One of my favorite versions is the Nashville, TN 1977 boot of "GYOW." It rocks!

That bottleg is amazing on the whole. I'm gonna listen to the GYOW version now!
