Thanksgiving Plans?

I know I start this thread every year. What's your Thanksgiving plans???

I'm hosting it this year. My grandpa died earlier this year, and my grandma and mom are not in the mood for the holidays, period. So, since they took care of me when my Jason died, it's only right for me to take care of them. I have about 15 people to cook for. I'll make sure to have football on the big screen for all the men. I will find a few board games for the kids. Of course, I will be running my ass off between cooking and cleaning... but I look forward to it. After gorging myself all day long, I will stay up too late that night, and wake up too early the next morning for Black Friday festivities!

My parent's for dinner #1 around noon. Then off to the In-law's for dinner #2 around 4 or 5. I'm making dessert this year - thinking about pumpkin cheesecake - YUM!

I'm going to try my hand at this, also! I've only made one cheesecake before, and it turned out pretty good. Wish me luck!

My Mom died right after the holidays(and we could tell it was coming). For Thanksgiving, she was still able to go to my Aunt's house. For Christmas, we(just 5 of us) got takeout from Crackerbarrel. We did no presents that year, too. It was really weird, trying to celebrate, when there really wasn't much to celebrate. Death sucks, no?

This year, I'm invited to my Aunt's house in Columbus. As long as my dog's up for it, I'm going.

We usually have dinner with my father's side, so I'll be driving to IL. I don't even know who's hosting it this year, though.....either my grandma or aunt, I guess.

Sorry about your mom. It does make it hard. The last 2 years have been bad for me, but it doesn't seem so bad so far this year. It is hard trying to celebrate while greiving. Although I grieve for my grandfather, I'm not as bad as my grandmother or my mother.

hayley 11-15-2005 03:24 PM

I have no plans for Thanksgiving. I'm going home for a week (oh, god.) for Christmas and so I decided to forgo Thanksgiving.

I think I'm going to go get the tattoo I've been wanting on my wrist that Wednesday night so I have a few days off to recover without worrying about working with it.

Brwn_eyes0511 11-15-2005 03:26 PM

Spending time with both sides of my family...lunch and dinner! And then that night...DRINKING!!!!!

Thanksgiving (in my family) is the official start of drinking season. And it lasts until New Years Day! :woohoo:

Moony 11-15-2005 03:56 PM

We're going to my dad's aunt's house for Thanksgiving. *snore* The only plus is that my grandmother makes killer pumpkin pie!

I'll be spending the holiday with friends - and no doubt, making my famous, fabulous sweet potato casserole. I'll post the recipe later tonight...Reckless Kelly is playing at the Continental Club the Friday after turkey day. I'm looking forward to that, it's been awhile since I've seen the boys. For some of us, it's always drinking season. *hic*

I'm also gonna try making this - sounds easy, and delicious!

Parmesan Herbed Bread

Ingredients
1 (7-oz.) pkg. Martha White® Quick and Easy Extra Rich Buttermilk Biscuit
Mix
1 (6-oz.) pkg. Martha White® Buttermilk Cornbread Mix
1/3 cup 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese
2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
1 tablespoon chopped fresh dill or rosemary
1 cup (8-oz.) sour cream
1/2 cup milk
2 eggs, lightly beaten

1. Preheat oven to 375°F. (350°F. for dark pans). Grease bottom of 8x4-inch
loaf pan. In medium mixing bowl, combine biscuit mix, cornbread mix, 1/3 cup
Parmesan cheese and herbs. Add sour cream, milk and eggs; blend well. Spoon
into prepared pan; sprinkle with remaining 2 tablespoons Parmesan cheese.

2. Bake at 375°F. (350°F. for dark pans) for 45 to 50 minutes or until
toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool

For 12 hours of work (yes, I work 12 hrs every shift), I will get paid for 18.....so it's time and a 1/2.

....and I love being a Registered Nurse. It's really really stressful though...especially on a Medicine floor. I have up to 6 patients a night with all different reasons why they are there....chest pain, pneumonia, diabetic foot ulcers.....It gets crazy.

One of my cousins is a scribe (was a medical assistant for 4 years) and is currently going to nursing school...The ER, she says, is INSANE!

I'm working in the soup kitchen from 11:30-1:00pm, TRYING not to eat anything, because we all go to my mother-in-law's for Thanksgiving dinner sometime in the afternoon.

Curtis, last Christmas we had to take my mom to the ER on Christmas day (evening, actually) and I will never forget how kind those nurses were. They all had on Santa hats and I just couldn't stop thinking about how they gave up a part of their holiday to be there. I'll bet you're an awesome nurse.

I've spent a Christmas in the ER also... not the place you want to be on Christmas.

I started my volunteer work (Hospice and the soup kitchen) about a year and a half ago because I wanted to be able to get into graduate school. Now, I can't imagine my life without it. I have met so many great people and learned a lot. I can totally see myself doing this for many years. And you are a very nice person David- it shows in the way you post messages.
