Everybody Finds Out

I'm so upset that more wasn't done with this song. I've been thinking about this a lot lately. The strings and other instrumentation on this song is top notch, in my opinion. I love the little break towards the end (the "don't you know" part). It could have been an awesome video or single and a remix would have been amazing. I hate that it was just left on the CD. I really like it and wish it had gotten more attention.

Hell, yeah.

It should have been the leadoff single. Lindsey should have been shot for the "metallic voice" production on it. Stevie's vocal is blistering. They should have done it live- they could have done a change-up on the arrangement to allow the lead vocal to be done right.

I think SYW would have sold a LOT more copies if they had done a great video for this and promoted the **** out of the single. I mean, "Peacekeeper" is alright... but I think selecting that song as lead off single (combined with the running order) sunk the album.

I totally agree. I fecking loathe that tinny, AM-radio effect that he uses constantly. That vocal she laid down is one of the best she's done in YEARS. I'm not totally crazy about the song itself, but lately I've been playing it and loving it just because it's so darned fun. It's Stevie's "Believe." I do wish that they had opened the song like the alternative version opens, though; loudly and abruptly.

Highwayman 11-09-2005 11:41 AM

:distress: This was THE most un-FM sounding song on the CD. It should have been kept for TISL or another solo outing. I don't think John Mick or Lindsey really played on it. Christine certainly would not have done those keyboards. Solo stuff... I love the song, but it just didn't "sound like them."

I didn't hear a single until I got to RTTG. Steal Her Heart Away should have been the single, Bleed To Love Her should have been a single, RTTG should have been a single with a super cool video. Peaskeeper and SYW? No. Killed the album.

I heard Say You Will in Big Lots. 'Nuff said.

You have a point in regards to it sounding very un-Fleetwood Mac. But that's my beef with the whole album; with the exception of a few songs, it sounds like two solo albums thrown in a blender and offered up to consumers. Great songs, but as an album, it's woefully inept.

ELIUD 11-09-2005 11:52 AM

I agree 1000% about Everybody Finds Out as a lead single. This song represents the album so much better as another side of Fleetwood Mac. An adult contemporary rock band that can create new and relevant music. Not the classic rock nostalgia band that everybody thinks of it as.

What the hell could you have possibly been doing at Big Lots?? (sorry- couldn't resist)

You and I both know this would have been a bitter disappointment live. Never would have been done in the proper key, and let's face it - Stevie never sings a song at this tempo live. I don't know why but she doesn't.

I love Big Lots too for trash bags and household tools and things like that. I wouldn't buy any of the furniture, clothes, decor or food if it were free.

She did a good job on RTTG the two times they did it  Also, I think in the DR doc. - she was singing it in the same key or close to it. So, I think she would have done it justice.

I couldn't agree more about EFO. It's always been one of my favorites off SYW and I think it should have been a single over any of the ones that were released. I'm not sure how it would have translated live without the great string parts though which really make the song. My favorite part is definitely the orchestral breakdown "don't you know". Such an upbeat, energetic, rock out song with great vocals and superb production.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but isn't it true someone outside of FM wrote the music to EFO and Stevie the lyrics? I've always wondered why in the world a band with 3 (in this case 2) competent songwriters would use outside people to compose their music  (even though they've had some great songs as a result).

OMG, I looked at the nasty ass food there once and it was all out of date. And it was all the funky stuff that the big name brands tried to push but failed miserably at selling. Reminded me of a discount grocery store my grandmother used to go to called The Boston Barn. 'Twas not a barn but an old, dilapidated supermarket where they sold twenty snack size bags of chips for one dollar because they were past the expiration dates on the bags.

RTTG was lowered a step, but I liked it live. If she did that last section of EFO in the same key live I would eat my shorts. And yours.

I thought only one recording surfaced; just the Columbus show and not the full rehearsal?

I'm convinced that the reason it was dropped was because it would have been too taxing on her voice to sing it every night.

EFO has always been one of my favorite songs on the album, because it just comes right out and kicks your ass, as opposed to "Say You Will," which is a nice enough song, but one that very quickly and easily fades into the background as you stroll the aisles of your favorite pharmacy.

Who knows why they didn't at least do it live. Probably too exciting for Stevie. Wouldn't want her to actually break a sweat up there or rock out at all.

She could make it all better if she did it with the orchestra, though...

SapphireSister 11-09-2005 12:23 PM

Also some of her best lyrics in years IMO:

"When love starts out in the darkness
It doesn't do well in the light
Affairs of the heart
That start out in the dark
Usually stay with the night"

 :woohoo:

Rick Nowels wrote the music. Two guys by the names of Gary Nicholson and Ray Kennedy wrote the music for Running Through the Garden, too.

I think it was more a function of her perception of poor audience reception. I think she can within reason sing anything anyway she wants and she will be okay. I think she just plays if way safe because she has had huge vocal trouble in the past, she is in her late 50's, etc.

Yep Rick Nowles, that's what I thought. Too bad when the music for one of the best songs on the album wasn't written by the band. I don't know why that bothers me. I guess when I really love a Stevie song I always hope it's her original composition.

I see what you're saying, but I also totally love how the work of two minds comes together to form such an awesome song. I couldn't imagine either without the other.

It's incredibly cheap. I almost bought a whole cart of dish detergent the last time I was there because it was two for a dollar and they were the big 25 ounce bottles with bleach. Cool ****.

ELIUD 11-09-2005 12:44 PM

The "strings" on the song sound more like a synthesizer to me. But I love that part and think it would be great with an orchestra in Australia.

Does anybody know if Stevie wrote Cat House Blues. I love that song and want it to be her's.

He also wrote one of my favorite Madonna songs, "The Power of Goodbye". This guy is good!

Lack of vocal pliability. Her voice box doesn't have pliability any more. She can't sing 'bustling,' so that affects a lot of songs, like 'Rhiannon,' 'Edge of Seventeen,' 'Rock 'n' Roll,' 'I Need to Know,' etc.

Her voice is more geared to the languid.

SapphireSister 11-09-2005 12:56 PM

OMG I'm having a mild coronary!!! I was looking through Rick Nowels discography and it said he wrote the music to Rooms on Fire!! I never knew that? I thought Rooms was an original Stevie composition. I'm crushed that the music to my favorite Stevie song was not written by her when all these years I had assumed it was. I'm devastated! I need to go back so sleep and hope this is a nightmare lol. :distress:
