Magic Wings Photos

One of the other highlights of my trip was to the butterfly conservatory and gardens in S. Deerfield, MA called Magic Wings.

Here are some photos. I am sorry but I don't know the names of them.

Stunning. I love butterflies. That solid orange is gorgeous. Where did the name butterfly come from and is it true that butterflies only live for a day or two?

I believe that they said they live for about 2 weeks.

Stupid question

What is that in those glasses? Butterfly food or is that for show? Those are gorgeous pics, Pattie...and the ones you think of are monarchs, I believe.

WelshWitchPMD 11-05-2005 11:16 PM

This one was very hard to get. They told us that because of it's color it attracts predators so it rarely opens it's wings. It found this guy's shirt attractive so it stayed on his arm and away I snapped.

No, they are feeders but I don't know what is actually in them. Yes, I do think that those are monarchs.

Yup - that's a Monarch (the black and orange one - I forgot to click the "Quote" box in my reply). A male one in fact - you can distinguish males by the black "eye" dots on the lower set of wings near the posterior. They developed them through evolution - oops, I mean Alien Design - to ward off predators. But the dots are really a red herring anyway - the plants they eat and lay their eggs on make them poisonous.

I volunteer at a tiny nature center here in town, which has been designated a way-station for Monarchs on their migration to/from Mexico. It's very fascinating watching their life cycle. Not to mention all the other butterflies and hummingbirds that are attracted to the same area.

Awesome pics Pattie! Thanx for posting.

Thanks for the info. Yes, they did tell us that the monarchs can get a bit agressive this time of year because they know that they should be flying to Mexico.
