okay, I'm going to try the lyrics from memory, I think the last time I heard this I was five or six....I also think I used to sing it on the schoolbus in kindergarten...Wait, no that was a song that went "She played, tambourine, with a, silver jingle and she must have known the words to at least a million tunes. But the one most requested, by a man she knew as cowboy was a light night benediction at the Y'all Come Back saloon." okay, Jose Cuervo. "Jose Cuervo, you are a friend of mine I like to drink you with a little salt and lime did I, kiss all the cowboys did I shoot out the lights, did I dance on the bar, did I start any fights. (doondoondoon). Yeah? That one? That was a bizarre random flashback moment for me. |
Oh geez, so hard to pick.... I love WAY too much 80s music, 1/3 of the space on my mp3 player is 80s music alone.
I Ran (So Far Away) - Flock of Seagulls Everybody Wants To Rule The World - Tears For Fears Human - The Human League Voices Carry - 'Til Tuesday Shattered Dreams - Johnny Hates Jazz .... as well as ANYTHING by Duran Duran, Yaz, Depeche Mode, Debbie Gibson or Pat Benatar. |
Plz. Do you want me to list until next Tuesday? :p
I think the easiest way to do this is in alphabetical order by artist, since I may need iTunes' help to get through this. The ones in bold are the super fantastic ones  Love Shack, by The B-52's Sex (I'm A...), by Berlin The Metro, by Berlin Pleasure Victim, by Berlin Angels On The Balcony, by Blondie Go Through It, by Blondie Rapture, by Blondie Call Me, by Blondie Video Killed The Radio Star, by The Buggles Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, by Cyndi Lauper She Bop, by Cyndi Lauper Time After Time, by Cyndi Lauper You Spin Me Right Round, by DOA Boys Of Summer, by Don Henley Rio, by Duran Duran Paradise City, by Guns N' Roses Kids In America, by Kim Wilde Like A Prayer, by Madonna Material Girl, by Madonna Beat It, by Michael Jackson Love Is A Battlefield, by Pat Benatar Back On The Chain Gang, by The Pretenders I'll Stand By You, by The Pretenders Middle Of The Road, by The Pretenders Little Red Corvette, by Prince Once In A Lifetime, by Talking Heads Burning Down The House, by Talking Heads Gloria, by U2 Pride, by U2 New Year's Day, by U2 And that's a VERY rough list. I mean, I may have to post another list completely.  |

"The Perfect Kiss"
The song is like a mini-movie of sorts with its various sections. Starting out with a complex rhythmic pattern programmed by Steve Morris, Peter Hook soon lays out a short bass vamp that sounds like the Order's attempt at funk. When that's done two sequencer lines start interacting, the other is silently faded in by Gillian Gilbert. Then she attacks the keyboards and out emerges the main theme, both hopeful and yearning. At the same time Hooky begins to play one of his most famous bass lines, as usual, on the higher frets of his instrument. Soon Sumner steps in with his mid-'80s passionate vocals and with his usual enigmatic lyrics that combine naivete, questionable rhyming and something sinister. As usual there's no real knowledge of what the exact lyrics are, people have just been using their own ears to determine them. Some people have suggested that this is the first song about AIDS: Quote:

Second verse with its obvious sexual hints: Quote:

Another new section, this one features harsh keyboard tones on the Emulator as played by Morris, Hook beating the syndrums like a man possessed and Sumner playing a short snippet of a solo. Then it all halts down to the main rhythmic figure. Another new section, Gilbert lays out an ethereal keyboard figure, Hook plays some atmospheric parts on his bass and Morris plays some samples of frog sounds on the Emulator. It has been suggested that the frog sounds are related to the classic fairytale about the frog prince, hence the title of the song too. Morris brings out a wheezing sample from his keyboard to end this section. The basic sequencer line takes us to a cowbell solo by Sumner, one of the best uses of cowbell in the history of man. http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y19...leuvenbell.jpg After which Hook breaks out with his bass again and Gilbert begins playing dramatic keyboard chords. The main theme is brought out from time to time but new ideas are added too. This section is for many the best moment for Peter Hook's bass in the history of New Order; he just keeps on playing for two-and-a-half minutes straight, using the main theme but also new ideas. Then at some point Sumner joins in with his guitar, strumming like mad. The result is one of the biggest wank-offs in the history of music for a group that started out as a punk band. The tune builds to a towering climax, with Hook eventually using the thickest strings on his bass. At the end Morris unleashes two samples from the Emulator, the last one is a crashing, orgasmic sound. An epic has come to its close. Here's an audio file of the Order playing the song live at Leuven, Belgium in 1985. http://rapidshare.de/files/6861268/T..._Kiss.mp3.html The song was debuted at Royal Festival Hall in May 1984 with the alternate title "I've Got A Cock Like The M1" and it was released on Factory Records in May 1985. The Order stopped playing it after the 1993 tour which is a disgrace; it is like the Buckingham Nicks line-ups of Fleetwood Mac not playing "Rhiannon". |

I am both shocked and appalled that no one has yet mentioned one of the best and most important musical-cultural moments of the 1980s: Dire Straits' "Money For Nothing." Not only is it just a kick-ass rock epic with a killer guitar riff, not only is it far and away the best thing Sting ever had a part of, but the video was absolutely brilliant. There's no possible way anyone can think about the first years of MTV without thinking of this song and this video. It's a monument, and one of those wonderful paradoxes of a "protest" song that actually became a huge hit.
