"How I wish, how I wish you were here." I like Creep a lot but nothing beats sitting in your chair and hearing "Welcome to the machine!"

danax6 10-21-2005 02:42 PM

Definitely Pink Floyd.

Oh my. Well, Radiohead does have a number of songs that I think are pretty great ("Fake Plastic Trees," "High And Dry" and "Paranoid Android" among them), but I never did jump on their bandwagon. I always thought "Creep" was one of their lesser songs, and they lost me completely with the Kid A stuff.

At the same time, Pink Floyd has a number of songs that I truly despise ("Welcome to the Machine" and about half of The Wall among them - yeah, I get it, Roger, you think you're a scary robot, that's great, it sucks). Still, most of their early 70s stuff is really great, and very few albums by anybody match the sheer brilliance and cultural importance of Dark Side of the Moon. So Floyd it is.

estranged4life 10-21-2005 03:41 PM

Duh...

I think we know how this one will turn out...

Feeding the Radiohead to the Lion, err Pink Floyd are we?

DavidMn 10-21-2005 04:54 PM

Us And Them is one of my favorite songs of theirs!!!

CreepingDeath 10-21-2005 05:12 PM

Ah, I was wondering when we would get to Pink Floyd. They're one of my all-time favs.

Of course they are both too depressive and slow for me. :)

You're listening to the wrong songs from each of them.

Pink Floyd, no contest, and I'm even more convinced after their performance at Live 8.

Yes, lord knows we wouldn't want to expose each other to new music we might like around here.

sparky 10-21-2005 08:10 PM

A lot of minor chord dreariness in these bands. But, I am PF fan from way back. I'll go with them. All the Radiohead songs I have heard have led me to the conclusion that the singer must be tone deaf.

SteveMacD 10-21-2005 08:13 PM

I find both bands a bit too out there for me. That having been said, I'll say Radiohead, if only because of a funny moment at a Guided By Voices concert. Before the band starts playing, Bob Pollard, drunk (and probably stoned) off his ass starts talking into the mic about how they're the fourth best band. He said:

"We are the fourth best band. The best band is Pearl Jam. The second best band is Radiohead. The third best band is REM. We're the fourth best band. **** you Foo Fighters, we're number four!"

new? wait, are you assuming I haven't heard what you are talking about? Oh, Jickwim, nonononononono!!!! I've been exposed. I swear.
hehehe.
Actually, I just read your "making a seasonal CD" list, or whatever, and we have not the same taste at all. Oh, except "I Know I'm Not Wrong". I like that one. :xoxo:
I'd also like to take this opportunity to agree with Sparky. :)

Actually, we like a lot of the same music, as you already know from the "guilty pleasures" thread. Most of the music you like just isn't what I chose to put on a fall CD. You'd probably love most of my spring mix, though.

....which still is unbelievable in my book......

well i'm voting for Radiohead. Not because they are better or more influential, but my favorite PF-album is The Wall, and My fave Radiohead is The Bends.

The Bends wins.....

Although I'm curious how the votes would turn out if Radiohead was against Smashing Pumpkins....

Or against Oasis, for the ultimate pretentious Brit face-off!

I wonder if there are many Pumpkins fans on The Ledge. James Iha was always a big Lindsey fan, I think.

Ahh... but LB's a Radiohead fan, so that might hold some sway.

Do the Pumpkins even exist anymore? I can't recall anything since Mellon Collie.

Two or three years after Mellon Collie came Adore, then in 2000 there was Machina, and they played some farewell shows in Chicago and Billy broke up the band, and has since gone about verbally abusing James and D'arcy as much as possible.

Not too long after breaking up the Pumpkins, Billy formed Zwan with Jimmy Chamberlain and a few other indie superstar musicians, and they put out one pretty decent album in 2003 (fun, well-played guitar pop, if a little MOR) but broke up before the end of that year for no real reason.

Then, this year, Billy released a solo album, which I haven't heard, but I can only assume it's awful. The guy's become a weird caricature of himself. He's got a blog where talks about how much he loves his kittens and hates D'arcy and crap like that. He put out an ad in the Chicago Sun-Times over the summer talking about getting the pUmpkins back together, but I think it was just a publicity stunt for his new album. Weird dude.

Noooo!!! *cries in background*

How did I miss this one? Radiohead. My band lost! I don't think I will recover from this one...26 to 8???!! Yikes. Oh well, it doesn't matter. Just a little poll (of which my boyfriend, who thinks PF are the greatest musical force ever to grace this planet, will probably be proud- though he loves Radiohead as well). I can live through this. It'll take time to recover, but I'll make it I suppose.

I'm off to listen to the Bends for consolation. How anyone can deny their genius is beyond me. Pink Floyd= zzzzzzz
