FM Favorite Lineups

I Know I'm in the minority here, but my favorite FM lineups are the
Then Play On and Kiln House versions of the band.

I think the full length version of the Madge session on "The Vaudeville
Years" is one of the best jams I've ever heard. You can see why Mick
thought Peter was in the Clapton-Page-Beck mold and their equal. I have
to agree he's at his very best on this track. I also love the retro-rock that
Jeremy does on Kiln House and his solo LP. With Chrissie replacing Peter the
3 part harmonies they did were great.

My holy grail of lost FM tracks is the b side of the Jeremy Spencer
single "Linda" called "Teenage Angel". This is the studio version of the
live track from the Boston Tea Party performances. Why it was left off
Jeremy's Solo LP I don't know. I have a copy of the 45 but talk about
surface noise, it's really hard to listen to.

In addition the b sides "World In Harmony" and "The Purple Dancer" are not availabe on CD in their original version that I know of. Alternate versions have appeared on some compilation CDs but as far as I know, both have only appeard on the German release LP "The Best of Fleetwood Mac", which I have a copy of, plus the original 45s, but nowhere else.

Any suggestions on where to find CD quality versions of these tracks?

Do you mean "Teenage Darling"? This is one of my favorite performances on the Tea Party set - absolutely hilarious. Does the studio version reach the same heights?

I haven't listened to Kiln House in a good long while, but it might be time to pick it up again.

As far as I know, these have never been released on CD - a shame since they're both so good. While I think some of the live versions of "World In Harmony" are better than the studio one, I don't think that's true of "The Purple Dancer" - one of my favorite early '70s tracks from the band. I keep hoping that if we ever see remastered versions of Then Play On and Kiln House, that these tracks will be added on there.

Here's an MP3 of "Purple Dancer". This was taken from the vinyl single. Just click on FREE at the bottom of the page, then wait about 15 seconds & you'll see the download link for Purple Dancer at the bottom of the page.

re

you're right

it is Teenage Darling

oops,
a typo

bretonbanquet 10-18-2005 12:57 PM

Copies of Linda / Teenage Darling pop up on eBay from time to time and aren't expensive if you want a better copy than the one you currently have :wavey:

I think that the German Greatest Hits album with Dragonfly / Purple Dancer / World In Harmony etc was briefly released on CD, but having said that, I've never seen it, even in Germany... that would be the only official CD release of the studio versions of PD or WIH.

I also prefer the Then Play On / Kiln House line-ups to any other line-ups, no contest as far as I'm concerned... anyone interested in that period should definitely check out the Madison Blues box set with the Jeremy Spencer interview disc. It's a fantastic live document of the Kiln House era, and you get 'live in the studio' versions of Purple Dancer, Station Man etc, plus Down At The Crown and Crazy About You, which are totally essential!!

Actually, my LEAST (by a long margin) favorite incarnation is the Rumours lineup.

But, that said, when it comes down to it, my favorite incarnation of Fleetwood Mac is whichever one I'm listening to at the moment.

SteveMacD 10-18-2005 08:11 PM

My favorite incarnation is the one with Mick and John...

jbrownsjr 10-19-2005 02:01 AM

My favorite incarnation is

Bob Welch
Christine McVie
Mick Fleetwood
John McVie

I love that band live a whole lot. But this is if I had to pick...

OH! Can't we add Bob Weston into the band???:o

macfan 57 10-19-2005 05:18 AM

My favorite line-ups are the 1971-1974 Welch/McVie incarnations & the Rumours line-up from 1975-1980 only. I like Fleetwood Mac best during the 1970's.

GateandGarden 10-19-2005 08:11 AM

My favorite line-up is

John and Mick (obviously)
Stevie Nicks
Christine McVie
Lindsey Buckingham
Bob Welch
Bob Weston
Danny Kirwan
Peter Green

Nothing said I couldn't make one up, right?

And what did Jeremy ever do to you?

Nothing at all. I'm starting to like him more, actually. But to me he's not one of the vital ones. :sorry:

Ok, I just thought of this as it pertains to lineups. WHo exactly was in the "Fake" Fleetwood Mac and how long were they on the road as such. I'm pretty sure it was '74, just not when.

wetcamelfood 10-19-2005 07:59 PM

Fake Mac

Elmer Gantry - gtr/voc
Kirby - lead gtr
Dave Wilkinson - keyboards
Paul Martinez - bass
Craig Collinge - drums

I think it lasted about 2 weeks (in Jan. '74). Hope this helps. :)

John

John

Paul Martinez went on to play bass on Robert Plant's first solo album. He co-wrote a few of the songs, too.

Yeah, they all did pretty good to some extent, EG of course with his "Elmer Gantry's Velvet Opera" 1968 cult classic album (which Plant liked too), Gantry was in Alan Parsons for a few albums, Wilkinson was in Chicken Shack for a while, Martinez like you said w/Plant, Cat Stevens, etc. Collinge had played with Manfred Mann, we could go on and on. :)

John

And, let's not forget they went on to become "Stretch". Which counts one Nigel Watson as a former member...THAT's an ironic twist...especially considering the current litigation.

If Lindsey's not your hero, you shouldn't be playing a Turner!
You should give it to me!:wavey:

chiliD 10-21-2005 10:23 AM

Buddy Holly was one of the first guys to play a Fender Stratocaster, but I don't think Dick Dale or Jimi Hendrix or Stevie Ray Vaughan started using Strats because of Buddy Holly.

I seriously doubt Slash or Mick Ronson or Freddie King or Mike Bloomfield or Eric Clapton or Peter Green started playing Gibson Les Pauls because Les Paul himself played one.

Lindsey basically introduced the Turner Model 1 to the world. And, that's where his influence with me ends.

Intersting. My only issue with the comparison is that Fenders and Gibsons are mass produced, widely available, and are associated with many noteable players of different styles. (Okay, I know Les Pauls were buggers to find there for a few years, but still.) The Turner is NOT mass produced, not widely available, and I know of only one guitarist associated with the guitar. Just say it: You wanna be like Lindsey on some level.

Hmmm...more than you actually realize, Steve. John Stewart plays one...Colin Hay of Men At Work plays one...country star Hal Ketchum plays one. Just to name THREE others...and well, ****, Steve, ME, I play one. And also two other Ledgies...madformac (well, ex-Ledgie) and Seteca, too! And, just check out Rick Turner's message board...a whole ****LOAD of non-Lindsey wannabes play Turner M1s.

Oh...and the guitar player (whose name I don't know) of the funk band the Ohio Players plays an M1, as well.

You could beat me with a soap bar in a sock, grill me in a dark room with only a desk lamp in my face, and I'll NEVER agree to that.

Of course, I LOVE the guitar he USES, but I could give a rats ass about wanting to be like him...I've got my OWN sound & style which has NOTHING to do with LB. Maybe if I'd have gotten an M1 back in 1979 or 1980 when I was in my 20's, there's a slight chance I would tend to agree...but not in the last 25 years. My idol-worship days are LONNNNNNG over. Plus, on a local level, (with all modesty) I'M known for being "the guy with a Turner" (there aren't a whole lot of blues players with Turners)....Lindsey DEFINITELY doesn't even figure into that.

thanks for replies to:

got the download - I have another download from a web page no
longer available - this one does seem slightly better quality

also to:

brentonbanquet

I have the Madison Blues double CD & DVD which is great, but kind of leaves you with wanting more, if only they'd made just one more album with that lineup.

anyway, as a sidenote - I saw the Then Play On lineup when they toured (I'm assuming it was the tour that ended up at the Boston Tea Party) in San Antonio's Municipal Auditorium. They opened for Jethro Tull (Stand Up version of the band) and it was a hell of a concert. Owing to a dose of Purple Haze (who remembers those days?) it's all kind of a blur. I remember it being really good but not really which songs they played, except for Oh Well (part 1) which I do remember them playing. Peter introduced most of the songs by saying "the next one is a fast one" or "the next is a slow one". Jeremy sat at the piano for a lot of the songs, which were probably Peter or Danny songs. So anybody who was there and can tell me the song lineup I'd really appreciate it. Or if you also saw them on this tour which songs did they play when you saw them?
