Beatles top Variety 100 year entertainment poll

LOS ANGELES - The Beatles were singled out Friday as the most influential entertainers of the past 100 years, beating out the likes of Elvis Presley, Charlie Chaplin and Mickey Mouse, according to a survey conducted by show business newspaper Variety.

Behind the Fab Four's first-place finish, were in alphabetical order: jazz pioneer Louis Armstrong, television comedienne Lucille Ball, movie legends Humphrey Bogart, Marlon Brando, Charlie Chaplin, James Dean and Marilyn Monroe, cartoon hero Mickey Mouse and singers Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra.

Variety said the Beatles were named "Icons of the Century" because they were the entertainment personalities who made the biggest impact on the industry and the world in the past 100 years.

The newspaper published a list of 100 entertainers from all branches of show business, including actors, directors, screenwriters, musicians, television presenters, animals, comedians and cartoon characters. Among other names on the list were Johnny Carson, Johnny Cash and Lassie.

The winners were chosen by Variety editors based on polling of entertainment industry professionals and Variety staff and by online voting by the public on variety.com.

Among the criteria for selection were a performer's commercial, creative, political and social impact and even whether their image was presented - like James Dean's - on a t-shirt.

The list was to be published in Variety's Sunday issue to celebrate the paper's 100th anniversary. "It seemed only natural to celebrate 100 of the people who gave us something to talk about," said Steven Gaydos, the paper's executive editor.

Am I the only one who can't excited by these kinds of lists at all anymore? It's not even an issue of, "Well, how dare this person and that person not be on there?" or, "Well, you know, they don't make these lists to be definitive, they make them so we can argue about them!" anymore. I can't even get excited to argue about these kinds of things anymore. How many more times can some magazine or television station list the 100 greatest movie/music/TV/whatever of however long a time? Aren't people just bored out of their minds by these things at this point? Don't we all already know that the Beatles and Lucy and Bogie and Satchmo are legendary?

Glad she made it. If not...it would have been a sham!

I saw that he listed himself as "Not a registered member" as his location on the Ledge. I've done some trades with him before so I checked his website. Hope he is well but his blog gives you a clue of the direction he's taking.

Thanks for posting that Terry.

Brian J.'s posts were, to me, a real treat around here, but I respect his choice and will miss him. I wish him luck and nothing but good health and fortune to him and Deb.

With all Brian has been through this year he probably needed a break. I too enjoyed his posts and especially his signature pics. As you said it's his choice and we all should respect that. I hope he comes back down the road because he added so much to this board.

If you read this - all the best to you Brian!

I certainly wish him and Deb the very best; they've been through a whole lot. It's weird without him, though. He is one of the first posters I remember when I joined here.

It is weird without him. He's my metal partner in crime on this board.
