US Festival performance appreciation

I'm sure most of you have seen Stevie's US Festival concert a million times, but until yesterday I had only seen a few songs. I now have a DVD of the entire show.

I have to say this is a remarkable performance by Stevie, maybe one of the best I've ever seen! She is so confident, playful, and even a bit spontaneous (and of course high as a kite). She did Stand Back before anyone knew it--she would never preview a song these days.

She is slighty messy--strange banter with the crowd, I think she screws up Gypsy in the middle by singing the final la-la's, seems to go off and talk to Jimmy Iovine (I think that's him) for a few minutes in the middle of Gold and Braid, and starts that song by babbling about her tambourine.

But I think that all adds to the greatness of the show. It's a real rock and roll performance, nothing like the carefully scripted stuff she does now. I love her graceful performances these days, but boy is there a difference!

This show is a gem. My favorite moments are when she throws the tambourine down for two seconds and then picks it up, when she pretends like she's going to jump in the crowd, and her kick-ass Angel.

Anyone else love this show?

ontheEdgeof17 10-14-2005 12:07 PM

Other than Gypsy (when Sharon ruins the hell out of the high note) I think the show is top notch. I can watch it over and over....it never gets old.

Rickypt 10-14-2005 12:13 PM

Yeah, I noticed that about Gypsy...ouch.

I also love that Lori dances around like a spaz and Sharon even shakes it a bit during some of the songs.

I've never seen this show. Any of it. Nor heard any audio. Ever. :distress: :distress: :distress:

Nice review though. :wavey:

How can I get a copy of this DVD? Thanks...

That's the Stevie I fell in love with and is still my favourite Stevie!

I love this concert. To me, it's nice to see a great outside venue concert from Stevie - you get the cool wind in her hair and capes, the great performances and lots of gab from La Nicks.

Richard B 10-14-2005 03:05 PM

Yeah...great show. She loved performing in front of several hundred thousand people.

The part in Edge of Seventeen where she jumps down off the stage in the front and runs is so cool.

I have two performances only. I sure would love to see that Angel. Anyway, the two I have are pretty much as described. Strange banter, a very free wheeling playful stevie. Very good, although one of the songs isn't my fave (Nightbird).

Nixxxed 10-14-2005 04:15 PM

My fave part is when she's talking and says she is having such a good song she wants to play all night:

"We could do everyone's favorite songs. Throw in a little Rolling Stones... A little Turtles... They're freaking out backstage, cuz they know I'm serious!"

Also, the first (ever) performance of Stand Back:

"What does that mean, you may ask??? Quicksand. And you're the only 200,000 people in the world who'll know that."

I love the US Fest DVD. I have had it for awhile and watch it every 2 weeks :o

Just so you know Amber Nightbird isn't from US FEST.

crap! what am I thinking of? Hmmm, now I'll have to check again. And try to trade with you.
Thanks for telling me. It all becomes a blur when you have 53 stevie videos on one tape. :p

LilyRose 10-14-2005 04:25 PM

I love this show! I honestly put it on sometimes just to have a laugh. The first time I watched it, it solidified how cool she really is.

I bought it on ebay. Got US Festival and the HBO concert for about $20 total. Don't know if that's a good deal or a ripoff or if I could have gotten them free somewhere, but it was worth it to have both on DVD.

I never knew the entire US Festival concert was available. I had a tape a long time ago, but it only had Outside The Rain, Stand Back, and SDMHA.

I was LMAO all night. Also when she messes up the beginning of Gold and Braid by babbling about how she had to take the tambourine from Lori...or somehting like that.

ryan8472 10-14-2005 04:36 PM

This is my most precious DVD. I guard it with my life. I LOOOOVE IT.

Favorite quote? - (intoducing the band) "..my roommate and my friend, Miss Sharon Celani; dark hair. She's yours for $25,000. Aaaaaand Miss Loretta Perry. From Texas.....And Mr. Film Camera from we don't know where. That is my band."

Amber, you may be talking about the Saturday Night Live performances. Nightbird and Stand Back.

If anyone wants the US Festival show I can open it back up on dimeadozen for download. It does take a bit of time to download as it's a large file.

No need to bother, the same exact copy (in very good quality) that was available for download once at Dime has now been posted to David's Fleetwood Mac Bit Torrent tracker at http://www.throwndown-videos.net/bittorrents/.
Me and David are currently seeding it. :wavey: Too bad I can't help for a long time, for my holiday starts tomorrow.

No, not SNL. It's US festival, I just got the songs wrong I guess.
anyway, is dimeadozen torrent, or regular download? That torrent thing worked once for me, but never again.

Yeah, Showtime broadcast the second US Festival with abbreviated sets, including those three Stevie songs. Plus, Westwood One simulcast the broadcast. But the whole Stevie set was never available commercially & still isn't to this day.

There's a lot more interest in the US Festivals these days, I'm noticing. Sites are going up with people's anecdotes & memories, & even tapes of the shows themselves are cropping up in trade circles. Somewhere out there is video of Fleetwood Mac's entire set in 1982. That's why Tom Petty wrote: "The waiting is the hardest part."

Ah, I love that sunburn/drugs/beer/concert experience. Were you close up? I'm practically dying thinking about being there.
Streisand pisses me off, though.

pssssst stevie.nleone.com They're down a lot - for example, now -
but WHAT a gold mine. Including Outside the Rain and one or two
others from the US Festival. And as the weird space worm creature

YOU never HEARD this!" :distress:

I asked my Dad if I could go. He said, "Yeah, as long as one of your brothers takes you" (I was fourteen at the time). My brothers were all busy, but my brother's best friend (they were both in the Navy) wanted to go. He was a Czech named Boris. He drove up to my house from San Diego and picked me up in his teeny tiny MG convertible. On the way down, I asked him to buy cigarettes for me- he did (faggy ones, too- I won't name the brand because I'm not interested in giving people more ammo on me than they already possess around here...).

Anycrap..... We got down to San Diego and packed everything up and went in his friends Winnebago up to Glen Helen Park for the three days of the US Festival. Boris's friend girlfriend was paralyzed from the waist down. So, I chauffered her around the festival in her wheelchair. The whole place was grass- at the end of the three days that grass was thrashed- and, as a natural amphitheater, it's got a steep slope. So, she really needed someone to help get her around. For my services, she hooked me up with pot, shrooms, beer, amyl nitrate, quaaludes, hash, and I smoked opium (my one and only time- great high). Needless to say, this fourteen-year old had a greeeaaat time. The metal day was kind of a yawn, musically (Scorpions and Quiet Riot- barf). At the time, I thought it was odd that they put Stevie on the same day with Bowie, Missing Persons, and Berlin. Although, the 83 Festival didn't really have that many "rock" bands. She would have definitely been a sore thumb on Friday's show with Flock of Seagulls, Wall of Voodoo, and Oingo Boingo. Eh, what do I know.

I didn't have a clue about being up in the front. I thought where I was sitting was fine. The music was SO LOUD!!! People were seriously packed in the front half of the lawn. We had scoped out a little area with an ice chest, banana chairs, and blankets.

I had a pair of lemon chiffon yellow Op cord shorts that were REALLY short. I wore them on Stevie day and, with the grass super trashed, there was dust and dirt everywhere. By the time Stevie performed after dusk, my lemon yellow shorts were now almost black from the dirt. I had one of those cheesy blanket/tarp thingys with the silver reflecting junk on one side to beat the sun glare. During Stevie's show it was getting a little chilly and I wrapped that sucker around me to warm me up. I think I used it as shawl wings during "Edge of Seventeen". Yes, I was quite the queen.

That weekend was my official transition from adolescent to teenager. Good times.

strandinthewind 10-14-2005 09:40 PM

Did you let Boris touch you in your bikini area :wavey:

amber 10-14-2005 09:40 PM

Oh.my.god.
great story. great experience.
wait, did you...."shawl" during edge, really?
did you go there mainly to see Stevie, or did you just want to go to the festival?
I totally remember those shorts.
That is a weird line up. Now that I hear everyone else that was there, Stevie strikes me as an odd duck. A fabulous odd duck.
That is one kick ass paralyzed lady!

I'm embarassed to admit it, but yes, I believe I did.

It was advertised like hell on Mtv back then and it was the beginning of summer and I really wanted to "get out", so I went. My parents never paid any attention to me, so they didn't give a rats ass about the conditions I would be in. Besides, that era was so much cooler and permissive than these days. I was more of an all-around music fan back then, so I wasn't as Steviefied as I would later become.

She really was the odd man out. Although Joe Walsh played right before her, so she had a good lead in.

That's very cool Joe Walsh was before her. I didn't see his name in your list.
