Like or Dislike: Rose Garden

I love this song. I have always loved this song. I know, it's kind of countryish, but I don't think that's a bad thing. It's a clean, simple, pretty song about love & loss & regret. The music fits the lyrics very well.

The harmonies on this verse are amazing:

"You never promised me a ring made out of diamonds
A band of gold you said was all you could buy
You never said I'd be a rich man's lady
And oh my darling...no, you never lied"

Love this verse:

"And now you're gone...and I'm alone, and I'm so lonely
Nothing seems to be the same
One day I turned around and you no longer loved me
In my life there's been a big change"

It's definitely interesting to me that she wrote this in 1965. I don't think Stevie can see the future or anything :D but still interesting. OH! I loved it live on boots from the Enchanted Tour. Just beautiful.

100 points to whoever gets choice #5 in the poll.

mikeschmike 10-08-2005 12:47 PM

This is one of my favorites, too. I love the last verse especially.

Well I've got all these things,
all these things but a small gold band
on my finger
on my left hand

I love how she did all of the harmonies, too. Great pick!

Three Reasons I Love This Song:

1) It's my mom's favorite Stevie song.

2) It's on Street Angel

3) I love the vocals, the lyrics, the music....everything about it.

That is the best thing ever.

I <3 Rose Garden!!!! I fell in love with Rose Garden when I got Street Angel the day it came out. Great lyrics. Great Vocals. Love the acoustic sound of it. Love it live.

AliceLover 10-08-2005 01:03 PM

The first time i discovered Rose Garden was when I saw it on the Enchanted Tour and I did really like it. I don't even remember listening to it on Enchanted box set when that came out, but I do really like it. It made a great interlude to Sleeping Angel as well.

4 Stars.

catinthedark 10-08-2005 01:18 PM

I chose the single white rose - only because I hate red roses!

But I love this song - and I'd echo what Paula wrote in her first post. Simple, sweet, and bittersweet. Especially poignant when you know that she wrote it before she ever hit it big. How did she know.... ?

strandinthewind 10-08-2005 01:25 PM

I think her vocal on SA is extremely weak. However, I like the lyrics and think the song was great live.

This song is gorgeous...and I agree that the last verse is just heartbreaking. What was she, like 20 when she wrote this?

The world tragic comes to mind. Sounds like something I'd hear at a horrible country show and feel the need to leave the room immediately. God forbid any non-fans heard this song! I’d never hear the end of it.

Just blast your Desert Angel for them with pride then. They will become instant fans, I'm sure.

LOL

I think I have great Stevie song sense.

At least she wrote DA and RG and not the pitiful CRY WOLF. Any three year old can tell you what Cry Wolf means. I just don't like it. Can't. Won't. Yuck.

But at least we both love Kick It :xoxo:

Nixxxed 10-08-2005 03:09 PM

One of my all-time favorites. Especially:

"YES, and I've got money
Men to love me
And acres of land..."

Also, a very fun song to 2-step to.

Macfanforever 10-08-2005 09:25 PM

As coming from the biggest country music fan on here, probably the only one too. I loooovvvveeee It. I love that song. that will be part of my Stevie Nicks goes Country cd mix.

I love Rose Garden. I can relate to the words . . . being 32 and unmarried

golden braid 10-08-2005 10:23 PM

I gave Rose Garden a dozen beautiful red roses. I love this song. I love the country vibe, I love the lyrics, I love the simplicity. I know the lyrics might seem trite but Stevie wrote them so long ago and they actually came true. The song makes me feel a little sad every time I hear it.

It will rarely be Stevie post 19eighty.....hrmm....6.5?

And the lyrics aren't that good either.

The whole song reminds me of something really, really, FLAT.

And the lyrics and/or the tune aren't good enough for me to tell if SOMEONE ELSE could have made it better.

I assume someone could have made it sound better,
but then I imagine that that version would have SUCKED too!

I mean, give it to Emmylou, Bonnie (Tylers and Raitts) , Dolly, Linda, Billie, Lindsey, Your Mom, The Guy Down the Road, Bette Midler, Doris Day, Shirley Muldowney, Norma Rae, Gloria, Baby Jane, and Pavoratti, - Maybe even one of the Juddsbarf, or a Dixie Chickhurl -
and it could still be crappy.
Although it could sound waaaaay better. :sorry:

I think that is why her Enchanted live versions kick a$$.

Amen.

She wrote it as baby girl still going through puberty and it sounds like it.

Word.

GarboSpeaks! 10-08-2005 11:44 PM

I chose a single white rose. Not a STELLAR song, but so simple and sweet. So summing up her choices, IMO. One of the last songs that choked me up upon hearing it for the first time, and getting the lyrics. It's not dippy, just sentimental and true. Live it was phenomenal.

Stephanie 10-09-2005 09:42 AM

Love it. Symbolic of what stevie gave up and gained in becoming a super star, IMO.

on edit--just read what garbospeaks said right before me, and I just said the same thing. So just say I agree but like the song a little more.

TheBlueLamp 10-09-2005 10:00 AM

Worst song Stevie's released EVER! I used to hate this song, now I just strongly dislike it. I love just about every single song of Stevie's but not this stinker.

Neal 10-09-2005 03:10 PM

I like it.

on my list of gross and not pretty things, well... this song isn't on it. :p

on my first listen of Street Angel, Rose Garden was tied for Mariel's Favorite Song with Greta. when Enchanted came out, i was so psyched that it was on there. pretty, simple, yes.

no, I think I called on them for the opposite point. As in "I even like these songs, but I still can't stand rose garden"

I know alot of non-fans who only loved country music and who hated, hated, hated Stevie nicks, because they all "thought that she was a which! Blah blah, blah, anyway, I made up a cd of stevies almost and country "tinged" songs, and gave it to acouple of them they all loved rose garden, and wanted to hear more!
Again, just like with my "stevie inspirational" Mixed cd I gave to some crazy people at church, Worked like a charm!
