Nights In Estoril

Help me out here. I think this song is about the times Christine and her (Then) husband Eddy Quintella spent there. AM I right?

Richard B 10-04-2005 06:17 PM

Estoril, Portugal is downright wonderful. Just went there in August! So gorgeous...and of course I would sing the song (in my head) while I was there. Estoril is a popular destination point for vacation seekers in Europe. Charming and sweet.

I think It's one of the better songs on Time too.

YES. This one and Hollywood (Some Other Kind Of Town) are my very, very favorite ones on Time.

Yup. I was going to Mention Hollywood.

I don't like the keyboards on this album. The textures she chose are kind of corny for me on Time. However, I think it's a beautiful song with some great vocals.

Who does the backing vocals? Anyone know specifically?

SteveMacD 10-04-2005 06:57 PM

To my ears, Christine just layered on the backing vocals. I don't really hear any traces of any other voice.

It's not just one of the better songs on 'Time,' it's THE best song on 'Time,' IMO.
And it's my #2 all-time favorite Chris song (#1 is "As Long As You Follow").

Absolutely sublime.

Dreammms 10-04-2005 11:55 PM

Top ten Christine song. Soooo good...

Never heard this song

OK I am a looser and do not have the TIME album, so I have never heard this song.
Heard a lot about it-but never heard the song
Can anyone post the tune so I can download it??
Don't know if that is possible but it would be cool...
Thanks in advance if you can
Love to hear some "new" Chris

You could buy the album. It's not out of print. ;) :) Or, if you just want the Chris songs, you could get them from iTunes. I just checked & they have all of the Time songs available to purchase and download. There are 5 "new Chris" songs on the album, all worthy to have, in my opinion.

I really like "Nights In Estoril". I think it's a beautiful song with great vocals. It's my second favorite Chris song on the album & is obviously about her & Eddy in Portugal. I think most of her songs on the album were more personal than many of her past songs-"Hollywood", "Nights In Estoril" & "All Over Again".

I wonder how much input Mr Quintela had in this song? Lots of her songs since Tango in the Night had joint songwriting credits with him but I've always wondered how much he did contribute.

Great song. Along with Hollywood and Do it all over again it's my favourite from Time. She might not have wanted to record the album, she might have hated Dave Mason but she just can't help herself when it comes to songwriting - they're nearly always terrific.

Gail

This is just a guess, but probably not much. ;)

Can anybody specifically point out any differences in the songwriting between songs that Chris wrote alone and the ones that Eddy gets co-writing credit?

I think that's an important point. The songs she wrote with Eddy don't seem to be particularly generic in any way, nor do they really differ specifically from her other work. Was Eddy a musician? Forgive my lack of familiarity with his life but I don't know much about him. Maybe he offered help with lyric ideas, or 'inspiration'.

I can't really tell any difference between her pre-Eddy songs & her songs with him credited as a co-writer. I've never actually heard her say what it was that he actually contributed to her songs. She only mentioned that he was very talented.

Eddy Quintela was a songwriter/keyboard player/engineer, at least that was how he was described in various articles when he first met Chris. Until he hooked up with her, I'd never heard of him. Since they divorced, he's pretty much disappeared.

When were they seperated? Like 3 years ago?

Not too long after The Dance, as I recall.

ragandbone 10-05-2005 01:57 PM

I love her voice on this song, and the melody, but nothing else about it stands out for me, with that dense and polished production. I would like to have heard some different instruments, perhaps a Portuguese Guitarra. Of course, then it owuldn't have fit with the rest of the album.

Anyway, her singing is really strong on this one.

My husband's family is from Estoril, but I don't suppose I will run into Christine there on the Praia.
The town of Cascais, just a little North of Estoril, is even more lovely!

The difference is that in one case she keeps (and deserves) all the $, while in the other, she has to share it although she still probably deserves it all. ;)

No, really-- I've heard from one of our Q&A guests (that i'm not sure I should name) that Eddy was good at taking others' ideas and working /w them, adding to them, etc--but wasn't as successful w/ actually coming up w/ ideas of his own.

I know you mentioned this before, but I didn't know that information came from one of the Q & A guests. Hmmm...... ;) :)

It sure is and also really is not normal Portuguese living either. It is for the very wealthy. On my recent trip, they named a street after Princess Diana there...she was in love with Cascais, which borders Estoril.

I have family in Portugal too. I love my country.

Very true. In fact I think that is the case with quaint (used-to-be funky and fishy) coastal cities in the US as well. We didn't stay with the wealthy relatives - we camped near the Guincho.

I don't have many American friends who have gone to Portugal, but I know it has always been very popular for the British (they sure do love Port wine) and Germans. I'll bet C. McVie's song has brought even a few more British tourists down.

She's never actually said that she hated Dave Mason. But, someone who ran a Dave Mason website posted here in this forum that she couldn't stand him. He got this information directly from John Courage(Christine's long time manager). Also, there is an online chat from 1995 in the Blue Letter Archives. She mentioned in that chat that she didn't think Dave fit in with Fleetwood Mac. And, she didn't let Dave anywhere near her Time songs & she apparently had nothing to do with his songs on the album.

She has never said a word about her divorce from Eddy & I don't believe she ever will. She hardly ever talked about him when they were married either.
