Band Face Off - Round 14

Round 13 certainly was unlucky for some, as Miss Emmylou Harris and Miss Linda Ronstadt lost out to the ample talents of Miss Dolly Parton.

I thought it was time for a little soul music in this Face Off, so I selected four true legends. Just who is your favourite?

The results so far *UPDATED*
Johnny Cash has once again moved ahead of Elvis, but will he stay there?

Round 1: Petty defeats Springsteen - 36 to 19
Round 2: Led Zeppelin defeat The Who - 22 to 19
Round 3: Madonna defeats Sheryl Crow/Kate Bush - 24 to 13/10
Round 4: The Beatles defeat Rolling Stones/U2 - 23 to 16/14
Round 5: Guns N Roses defeat Bon Jovi/Metallica - 17 to 13/12
Round 6: Heart defeat Blondie/The Pretenders - 23 to 16/6
Round 7: The Beach Boys defeat The Kinks/The Byrds - 24 to 10/10
Round 8: Johnny Cash defeats Elvis Presley/Roy Orbison - 20 to 19/7
Round 9: Abba defeats The Carpenters - 25 to 15
Round 10: Prince defeats Jimi Hendrix/Lenny Kravitz - 24 to 15/3
Round 11: No Doubt defeat Garbage/Hole - 26 to 11/9
Round 12: Bob Dylan defeats Neil Young - 26 to 24
Round 13: Dolly Parton defeats Emmylou Harris/Linda Ronstadt - 19 to 17/9

The polls are still open, vote now!

I can't pick between Marvin and Aretha!!!! argh

Serrart 10-04-2005 04:02 PM

Stevie Wonder, who can't feel the urge to dance or to take out the Kleenex box with his songs? I guess plenty, but that's their problem. :D

Romy

WildInTheWind 10-04-2005 04:04 PM

Aretha Franklin. I love her voice and songs.

Richard B 10-04-2005 04:05 PM

This is a tough one. It was between Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder. Decided on the Wonder. If only for Sir Duke!! Yeah...that's right...you can feel it all over.

:sigh: FINE evil one.

I'm going with Marvin, cause he was a brilliant composer.

shackin'up 10-04-2005 04:33 PM

Tough!

Marvin. But mainly for his early work. Still get a cringy feeling when I hear sexual healing. That's a nice opening line for a Tenacious D.-song.

I have to agree. I like to pretend that song doesn't exist.

dissention 10-04-2005 04:59 PM

Marvin, baby. Stevie Wonder's music repulses me.

If Al Green was on here, though, I would have gone with him. :D

markolas 10-04-2005 05:26 PM

Aretha.

If you'd put Otis Redding on the list, it would've been tough. And don't get me started on Diana Ross. What a bitch she is.

Oh my. Bit unfair lumping all four of them together, isn't it?

In the end, I had to go with Marvin, for having the longest string of artistic successes and for what he could do with that voice.

DavidMn 10-04-2005 05:33 PM

Aretha all the way here.

face of glass 10-04-2005 06:05 PM

Wonder to me had a greater run of albums in his peak period than Gaye did, and Stevie's grande humanism, spirituality and generally happy attitude does it for me. However, Music Of My Mind would never have been created without What's Going On coming out first so I do have to give Marvin a lot of credit there.

Diana Ross...

...This bitch is fierce and such a diva.

Oh, good lord. Did you read her autobiography? She is sooo whiny. And phony, phony, phony. Absolutely can't stand her. I like the Supremes, but...just barely.

...I dont like her enough to listen to her music....just my pick out of these people. I'm not a fan of this type of music. But you're right, she's a phony biotch.

In a lot of places in Europe, that actually is how it's labeled. Instead of an R&B or soul or rap or hip-hop section of the music store, there's a section labeled "black music."

I love Al, but I'd still go with Mr. Gaye.

This is the type of music that I grew up with so I'm getting all nostalgic now :o

gldstwmn 10-04-2005 09:12 PM

Marvin. I might have to listen to Heard It Through The Grapevine right now.

That's a little scary. Almost as bad as when it was called "race music."

I have it called that more times than not. I think it is okay to use that term though. Sadly, in Elvis' day, his music, which emulated black music, was called ni**er music and it got him banned lest white kids be exposed to it. Interestignly, the horrid use of that term in a fairly significant way helped bring around greater public acceptance of inter racial mingling, etc. So, from travesty came a good thing - though that cannot make up for the travesty.

The ironic thing is, the "white" versions of those songs were heavily sanitized. I have a couple of CDs by "jump blues" artists from the '40s...and some of that stuff would have the good white Christians in a tizzy even today.

Elvis' hip swiveling certainly wasn't  - and thank goodness for that

But, I agree with your point
