Gone to the movies lately?

I haven’t gone to see a movie in years I think. I went yesterday afternoon, which was nice because it was not very crowded. We went to go see The 40-Year-Old Virgin. It was funny in some parts. I liked it.

Do you go a lot and what have you seen lately that was good? In the previews that they show before the movie I did not see anything that appealed to me. I was hoping for an Elizabethtown preview but no. That will mostly likely be the next movie that I go see for obvious reasons.
I can get passes at work for $6.00, too. :)

michelle2677 09-25-2005 11:14 AM

I dont' ever go to the movies b/c my husband doesn't like to go. :( But I love going. I can't even remember the last one we went to see hahah...

Saw Corpse Bride last night and was rather disappointed. It wasn't bad per se, but just wasn't what I had expected or hoped for. It just lacked the magic of Nightmare Before Christmas.
And the previews? Looked pretty damned dismal. Granted, for that kind of movie it's to be expected that they'd show previews for kids movies... but I generally enjoy kids movies. The only one that looked even tolerable was Chicken Little, and that ain't saying much.

stargazer99 09-25-2005 11:28 AM

I don't get to the movies as much as I'd like, since I have a little one at home. But I did get out last week to see Wedding Crashers. I thought it was hilarious! Don't know when I'll get to see another movie.

Preach it, sister. I know how you feel.

We did get to the drive-in last weekend to see 40 Year Old Virgin and Wedding Crashers. Had a great time, both movies are very funny. My new thing is to say to friends & family "you wanna know how I know you're gay?" :p

I'd like to see Corpse Bride, and the sequel to Saw when it comes out (october?) That's about it, right now.

Corpse Bride wasn't that great.

I didn't know they were making a sequel to Saw, but then, I didn't understand the buzz (no pun intended) around the first one.

The one movie that I'm really looking forward to is Walk the Line, but I have no idea when it's supposed to be released. I keep reading all these rave reviews about Joaquin Phoenix and how he should be a strong contender for best actor at the Academy Awards (apparently he even did his own singing for the movie) but no mention on its release date. I adore JP and from the pics I've seen of him in this one, he's looking pretty darn good these days.

Ah, the drive in. There is still one here in RI and that movie was playing there, too. It was the last weekend for the drive in too but we had passes for the Showcase already.
Wow what a dying form of entertainment. They have all been knocked down to build strip malls and fancy condos.

November 18th.

Reese Witherspoon did all of her own singing in it, too.

I read that, too, but little miss bubbly with a pointy chin doesn't appeal to me so I just kind of ignored that little fact.

All the reviews I've read say that she knocks it out of the park and will probably get an Oscar nod. I've always liked her (especially in Election), so we'll see.

estranged4life 09-25-2005 12:11 PM

Nope...

not a movie theatre person...Last movie we saw in a theatre was the latest Harry Potter movie.

Will be seeing the next Harry Potter movie on November 18th (Probably at the 3 screen theatre here since admission is only $3.50)

Me neither. All that popcorn chomping, getting up and down, yacking through the whole thing. And that's just me during the previews! Seriously, I usually wait for the DVD. But the last movie I saw was "Must Like Dogs" and it was just me and one other lady in there. After seeing this movie, now I know why! :o

I saw Flightplan last night which was good. Jodie Foster did a great job with this role. I am going to see Cry Wolf next week which I am more excited for.

WildInTheWind 09-25-2005 02:16 PM

I don't particularly like going to the movies. If I sit for that long without be interrupted or having to get up I'll fall asleep! Might be a nice chance for a nap though....

Anways the last movie I saw at the theatre was the Winnie the Pooh Heffalump Movie with my daughter. What a fine film! ;)

I'm with you both too. I do not enjoy going to the movies anymore. I used to go 3-4x per week. Not anymore.

With huge TV's, kick ass 5.1 sound systems, Netflix...I get the groove right at home.

Finally saw Polanksi's 'The Pianist,' 'Greenfingers,' and last night I watched 'Seed of Chucky.' That movie is hilarious. Jennifer Tilly cracks me up.

trackaghost 09-25-2005 02:20 PM

The last two movies I saw were both excellent.
Broken Flowers, which still has me thinking, and History Of Violence, which was pretty powerful.

I didn't enjoy Broken Flowers at all. Very disappointed with that one. There were parts that I really liked but as a whole, I was underwhelmed. History of Violence was great and Viggo surprised me quite a bit, but I'm a huge Cronenberg fan, anyway.

I thought the end of Broken Flowers was underwhelming but then I haven't stopped talking about it since. Did he have a son? Was it a trick? There are loads of different theories apparently. So while I came out not knowing what to think (apart from the fact that Bill was, as ever, excellent) there are not too many films that have you thinking about them long after, which is why, ultimately I liked it :)
I thought History Of Violence was a very different film for Cronenberg, especially after Spider, but that too was very effective. Viggo was great, as was Ed Harris. Cronenberg is such an interesting director, everything he does is worth seeing I think.

DavidMn 09-25-2005 03:52 PM

The last movie I saw in the theater was Million Dollar Baby. Shows how I need to get out.

Serrart 09-25-2005 03:56 PM

I love movies :D : going into small theatres where I find the obscure directors I like most or joining friends watching a blockbuster that's not made by Bruckheimer or hasn't Tom Cruise in the cast: everytime is a big emotion for me the magic of the big screen, nothing comparable to dvds.

Some nice films I've watched recently: Goodnight, and Good Luck - I've already said it but it's truly beautiful, perfectly acted, very well directed and with some fantastic cinema moments, like the scenes shared by Patricia Clarkson and Robert Downey Jr. I'm looking forward to watch it again.
Sympathy For Lady Vengeance - Whoever has seen and loved Old Boy shouldn't miss this one. The leading actress is mesmerizing and her character is extremely nuanced, a desperate femme fatale near to a dark sanctity. It's very violent and quite disturbing though, but Park Chan Wook is one of the most visually powerful directors around, IMO.
Le Petit Lieutenant - A classic polar (noir with cops as leading characters), but its rhythm and measure in the performances give to the movie a strong, intriguing flavour.
13 - Tzameti: beautiful sharp film shot in black and white, claustrophobic and direct, melting thriller and characters study.
Proof - There's Tony Hopkins in it, so my judgement isn't crystal clear :p but I found it a good drama, extremely well acted and directed, where for the first time I found Gwyneth Paltrow tolerable.

I also love Cronenberg (although he really messed with my head with Crash). But I was very disappointed with 'Spider.' Don't get me wrong, I love the book. Discovered that Patrick McGrath (Asylum, The Grotesque) 'Spider' novel when it first published so long ago. I was mesmorized by it. Truly disturbing. I remember saying someday I am going to make a film of this. 10 or so years later, Cronenberg got to it first. Just not too happy with the film, mostly I think Ralph Fiennes was miscast.

I think Ralph Fiennes is vastly overrated to begin with, but I thought "Spider" was all about Miranda Richardson; she was outstanding.

I still don't think he's yet surpassed "Videodrome" and "Dead Ringers," though.

Miranda Richardson rocked that movie. Nailed that performance, as she tends to do.

I am one lucky owner of the OOP 'Criterion Dead Ringers.' So love that movie. Brilliant. Jeremy Irons really taught me what it is to be an amazing actor.

Me, toooooo! I saw the Warners reissue of it last weekend at Best Buy and they stripped almost all of the extras from the Criterion release. I should dust it off and watch it tonight.

eXistenZ is another one of my favorites; it's such a perverse black comedy. There's something about it that just tickles me pink.

Have you seen the adaptation of Asylum with Natasha Richardson?
It's quite compelling. Ian McKellen is particularly good in it.

I suspect that something is Jude Law ;)

What has happened to him? He used to be such an interesting actor. Alfie, Sky Captain... all terrible.

diamondsnake 09-25-2005 04:41 PM

I hardly ever go. Once every 6 months usually! But I've been seeing more movies lately because I literally force my friends to go see them now. I saw 40 Year Old Virgin and it was okay. Pretty funny. Loved Flight Plan. But I think those are the only movies I've seen all year!

I still want to see Exorcisim of Emily Rose, Elizabeth Town, and War of the Worlds. That is probably already out on video by now though.

Oh my, I saw that last month and had forgotten all about it. I saw a review for it on BBC America and thought it looked great; it most definitely was. McKellen was truly chilling. I did think that it was far too short and Hugh Bonneville didn't hit all the right notes, but other than that, it was tops.

CreepingDeath 09-25-2005 04:43 PM

I don't really love to go to the movies, but my boss always has free passes that he gives out. My cheapness gets the best of me and I usually end up going.

I recently saw Corpse Bride and The History of Violence. The latter was probably one of the best movies I've seen in a long time. The whole cast was incredible. Viggo <3
I honestly only went to see Corpse Bride because I heard there was going to be a trailer for Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. ::geek::

Yes...dust it off. I also just read recently that some of the "instruments" were also used in 'Little Shop of Horrors' during Steve Martin's dental scenes.

Yeah, I saw the release, pails in comparison to the Criterion, down to the quality of the picture.

eXistenZ rules. Jennifer Jason Leigh tickles me pink.

Tell me about. He's such a slut and I love him, but christ, pick some good roles. He's great in the off-beat stuff like Huckabees.

I saw the trailer for "All the King's Men" and nearly gagged. Law and Winslet are probably the only saving graces in that mess because Sean Penn is embarrassing from what I saw. Revoke the Oscar NOW.

No probs. I'm sure you'll like it, it's flawed like Dissention said, but it has plenty of redeeming factors, not least Richardson, who is excellent in the lead, although McKellen completely steals the show.

Ah, I had forgotten about Huckabees (how could I?), there's hope for him yet.

Sean Penn, god I hate him. But then he does something like The Assassination Of Richard Nixon and I have to admit he can be fantastic. I'll never believe he deserved that Oscar over Bill Murray though.

Yep. Viggy doesn't like W. During promotions for Lord of the Rings he would wear a "no blood for oil" shirt all the time.

He was truly fantastic in A History of Violence. I predict an Oscar nod. He's definitely come a long way from Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III.
