New "Direction"

I think it would be cool if Stevie kinda shifted direction. In other words if she went into a different genre. I'm thinking country music (not the homoginized stuff from Nashville). Or folk music (contemporary- not " Michael Row Your Boat Ashore").

And I think it would be cool if she teamed up with someone new like: Chrissie Hynde, Mark Knopfler, or Annie Lennox.

Don't get me wrong- she's the best. She could sing Yankee Doodle and I'd be mesmorized. But if she kinda re-invented herself, how should she do it?

Hmm...I'm under the impression that she's kind of winding down, so maybe it's past the time for a "reinvention"?

I'd love to hear her do something totally dark and stripped down, like Johnny Cash's last few albums. But I seriously doubt she'd go for something like that. I think TISL was about as much of a "reinvention" as we're going to get from her. I just hope she does another album before her voice gets too much worse. :D

eclipse 09-25-2005 09:20 AM

Won't happen

Why would she re-invent herself?
She has remained true to herself for 40 years, she won't change now...

And when you listen to her music, she already has----

the county edge
in some tunes: That's Alright-Leather and Lace-
Outside the Rain-How still my Love-After the Glitter fades

the folk/ballard edge in some of her tunes: Storms-Dreams-Sara-Think about It

the rock edge: Sisters of the Moon- Gold Dust Woman-Edge of 17-Stand Back-Fall from Grace

She truely has her own style that covers lots of genres of music, at least that is my thought.

Good question though Snow- I am sure others will have different ideas

WildInTheWind 09-25-2005 09:37 AM

Stevie going country would be just awful for me. I would be one very unhappy fan.

That I wouldn't mind! A Stevie Xmas album when you have a 3 year old would be a very good thing. She gets her Rudolph and I get my Stevie :D

I see your point. But I don't like seeing her getting "type cast" with her hits over the years and her song "sets". She is truly very talented and definitely has her own style. In this stage of her career, it would just be interesting if she broke the mold, so to speak...

About the genres, I have no idea. I'm not a big country fan, but if she wrote really great material country-oriented, why not, and the same goes fot other types of music. If I could express a wish I'd like to see her believe more in taking risks with her songwriting, as she does sometimes, not being afraid to disappoint her longtime fans.

Stevie has never reinvented herself musically. Never. I doubt she ever will. "Illume" is the only thing she's ever recorded that was completely out of left field and surprising from a "Wow, this is a Stevie Nicks song?" standpoint. I'm still a bit shocked over that one. If people crave artists that continue to grow musically, listen to David Byrne, Emmylou Harris, Blondie, Elvis Costello, etc. As much as we might want her to, Stevie isn't going to. I've always thought that if Stevie ever wanted to branch off and record something truly different from everything she's done in the past, now is the perfect time to do. She's in the final stages of her career where she isn't a huge seller anymore, so that gives her a lot of leeway to try different things without worrying about alienating her audience. Her audience is her die-hard fans and a few casual fans who will pretty much buy whatever she puts out.

Yes Stevie come home to country music.

Yes I agree,Country music,She was singing it at 4 years old with her grandfather, it's time to come back to her roots. She is not getting airplay on the top 40 radio stations. only some airplay on easylistening and classic rock stations.I think she do will on the country charts. She will kick Shania's, Gretchen's and Faith Hill's @$$'s .posible duets with Vince Gill, Toby Kieth,Garth Brooks,Allen Jackson and Tim Mcgraw ,sorry Faith ,hahaha.Do a CMT Crossroads with any country artists, Sing "After the Glitter Fades" or "Leather and Lace" with Don Henley on the Grand Ole Opry.win a CMA and a ACM awards for Entertainer of the year and song and album of the year. Stevie probably have better luck winning these awards then getting into the Rock and Roll hall a fame. Yes I know I'm getting carried away with it since i'm a big country music fan.Yes I know she can make it in country music. for her, A tribute to her father and grand father. And I hope she won't get in to the Rap Crap craze.and Heavy metal noise crap.

Wouln't that be something... Stevie is NOT going to change.
She has already proven that over & over. She recently was asked about her set list over the last Tour ..and her response was "If it aint broke..don't fix it"
Her best tour IMO was Enchanted..she really pulled out the older songs..dusted them off and went for it..to amazing results. It was the show we had all been waiting for..unfortunately with age..comes fear..she thinks the hits are what everyone wants. I prefer her taking risks..changing it up a bit.....I think most of us are a bit bored....to be honest.

golddustorm 09-25-2005 12:45 PM

This is totally not about the thread, but, Eclipse - who's the artist that created the painting in your signature?

Richard B 09-25-2005 01:26 PM

Might be kind of fun to hear her do some blues standards. She nailed 'At Last' and made it her own.

wolfontherun 09-25-2005 01:35 PM

Torch singer would be a great way to go for her at her age. Classic standards and or blues would be awesome.

In the Destiny Rules doc when they were practicing for the tour on that sound stage she improvises some song that sounds very bluesy and its just her singing and it is fabulous.

Please not country! Oh boy did I hate that duet with Natalie Maines.

Country tinged is cool ala Thats Alright.

Is Illume really that off the wall for her? Its edgy, chant like, commanding, a declaration of sorts, all very Stevie-ish, in a way its similar the the original GDW dont you think?

Miss Vicky 09-25-2005 01:56 PM

Umm... Stevie doing country or folk would not be a reinvention, but rather her music coming full circle, since country and folk are where her roots lay.

Stevie would never change directions like that. But it would be really cool if she teamed up with Chrissie Hynde!

I agree with this. I was going to bring up her live cover of At Last (and don't forget Sunday Kind of Love), which I think totally suits her current voice, even though she sang them a couple of years ago already. So, blues, okay if she decided to do something else, but I don't really need or want her to.

WildInTheWind 09-25-2005 02:12 PM

Bluesy stuff would fit her current voice. I would love to hear that. Not a whole album, of course, but a song or two in this genre would probably make for a good listen.

As far as the country thing....old style country I don't mind. I like her older songs that have that little bit of country hint to them. Too Far From Texas is countryish and I think it blows. :sorry: If she were to record country now....I think it would suck. Alot of modern country is more like radio friendly pop with a little twang. I have a feeling that is what it would be like.

ShangriLaTroubl 09-25-2005 02:47 PM

I would love for her to do a country/bluegrass album....it's a great direction to try especially in older age, plus it is respectable..
but just for ONE album lol

Chris

ragandbone 09-25-2005 03:19 PM

I love her folky/country songs, and I have always wanted her to do an album that focused on that style, but I have a feeling she wouldn't want to do it. Most of her friends and collaborators seem to be rock musicians. I especially hoped she would go in that direction, back in the late 80's, early 90's, instead of dolling up and synthing out.

I remember reading in Waddy Q&A that he encouraged Stevie to pay attention to Dolly Parton.

I would just like her to do an album that is more pared down, production-wise, more acoustic. She sounded great with Lindsey on his Soundstage show. They could do a kind of Gillian Welch/David Rawlings thing.

Hey, if Dolly Parton can cover "Stairway To Heaven"... (and in my opinion, she really pulls it off!)

snowman 09-25-2005 03:51 PM

Chrissie's unplugged version of "Back on the Chain Gang" is beautiful...

Sadly I have no idea...I am a large moon follower and go to many different sites (including Webshots.com...it's free, check it out  )
and download pictures, most of these don't have an artist's signature at the bottom, so I really don't know.
If I did I would be crediting them cuz Lordy knows...I can't draw  stick people are a challenge

the rest of the post is about already doing county and folk.
Not that she has already re-invented herself...

OK, I don't want to get into a debate about Dolly, or STH, but let me just qualify my comment about her "pullig it off". In no way does she ROCK that song, or match Led Zeppelin, the way Ann Wilson could do. When I first heard it, I thoght, "weird" and then "no" and "Uh, Oh, cheezeball" but then (IMO) she managed to apprehend some of that mystical religious quality the original had for me, in 7th grade. She does it by going overboard, because the original was bloated and overboard too.

I haven't listened to it (Dolly STH) since it came out, so maybe I would wince to hear it now. Don't know. Doesn't matter.

I have to check out "Peace Train"

It is weird for Dolly to cover so many songs, when she has been such a prolific songwriter. And, I wouldn't want to see Stevie do an album of Old Timey covers, just something more acoustic (Ok, maybe pedal steel in there too)

I think a new musical direction for Stevie would be a great thing. I also think a new contract with a small label would be a good thing for Stevie, so that she had the freedom to take whatever musical direction she chose. I also would love to hear a country album from her. Some of my very favorite Stevie songs are basically rooted in country - After The Glitter Fades, Think About It, That's Alright, Bella Donna, Enchanted, Candlebright, Angel.....I love her renditions of It's Late, and Are You Mine, and Wear My Ring. A country or blues-esque Stevie album would be a great thing to my ears. All in all, I'd just like a new album. I'm still excited about the Rhiannon movie project soundtrack, and the recordings with the Melbourne symphony, but no one other than Stevie knows if those will really materialize. At this point, any direction would be nice....but only after she's rested and feeling inspired. Albums of any type aren't good when they're produced out of pressure rather than creativity.

Well, I don't like country or folk music really, but I loved the jazzy/bluesy stuff she did during the Don Henley benefit shows, "At Last" and "When Sunny Gets Blue", so I would love to see her do a CD of classic jazz and blues. Maybe some Billie Holliday, Sarah Vaughn, of course Etta James, I would love to hear her sing "Georgia" in the style of Ray Charles...ooh!

What's next for Stevie

Even if she never does a full fledge 'new' album...I want a 2 disc LIVE CD from her best performances over the last 20 years. Also...an acoustic album would so ROCK!!! She could release a CD tomorrow simply called: "The Bootlegs"...we would all rush out and buy two copies....Another thought would be an all 'cover' CD, she could pick her favorite songs like..."Hello, It's Me"...I doubt she would go for that being known as a SONGWRITER though...lastly I could see an all 'duets' CD maybe with re-release of Stop Dragging and Leather & Lace...with a bunch of new songs with Stevie and all of her "friends" like, Sheryl, Lindsey, Joe Walsh, Chrissie H, Bonnie R., Chris I, etc etc...bottom line...I love her....we all do...and selfishly, we all CRAVE anything we can get...I cherish every CD I have, everything she has shared with us...I guess I just want more....her music just makes things....better.

This is maybe one of the funniest posts I've ever read.

My two cents: Country album. Definitely.

Actually, I'll probably be happy if she just steers clear of the John Shanks crowd. One album was fine, but I fear pushing our luck.

And stop hanging around with Sheryl Crow so much. She ain't that great, and it shows on the TISL songs she produced.

Stevie doesn't "get typecast." She typecasts herself.

I remember on the Enchanted tour, when she would get ready to do the acoustic set, she'd say, "I could never do this kind of thing on a normal tour." And I just thought, well why the hell not?

Actually, she seems to do better stretching herself when she doesn't have a new album to push. Her setlist was really interesting on the Enchanted tour, and it's been intriguing on her mini-tour this year. When she's pushing a new album, though, whatever slots aren't taken up by new songs seem to go to the warhorses.
