Band Face Off - Round 2

Well, Springsteen and Petty met each other in the ring, and while Bruce looked like he could sustain quite a few punches, skinny-boy Tom left The Boss bruised and bloody with 29 glorious votes to Springsteen's not too shabby show of 17.

So Round 1 to Petty, and his Heartbreakers of course, although the vote is still open!

Onto Round 2.

Both of these ear-deafening British rock legends have amps that go up to 11, but which will you choose?

Oh and don't forget to defend your choice.

DavidMn 09-22-2005 05:22 PM

Wow, that's a tough one for me. they're both very good. I gave a slight edge to The Who though.

Neal 09-22-2005 05:22 PM

Round 2: Led Zeppelin

Because Roger Daltry and Pete Townshend are both super creepy. :wavey:

DavidMn 09-22-2005 05:25 PM

Hey this brings up something I heard awhile back. I had heard that The Who and Led Zepplin didnt like each other that much, especially Pete Townsend and Jimmy Page. Is there any trugh to this?

dissention 09-22-2005 05:26 PM

The Who. Never got into Led Zeppelin very much, though I do like quite a few songs. I personally love Roger Daltrey's voice; their early albums are almost flawless and obviously had a great deal of influence on punk, musically and thematically.

ontheEdgeof17 09-22-2005 05:27 PM

I flipped a coin cuz I don't listen to either of them.

The Who, it is.

estranged4life 09-22-2005 05:34 PM

Like both...

but have to go with Led Zep.

Serendipity 09-22-2005 05:35 PM

Oh my, make it difficult for a displaced rock chick why dontcha? Ok....Led Zep it is. Only cos my local biker bar always plays "Rock and Roll" real loud, real late and I tend to start the dancing. :) I'm tempted to go back and vote again to cancel my vote out tho. I swear I was born to late.........

Vote again huh? U sure you're not from Chicago?

gldstwmn 09-22-2005 05:41 PM

Led Zep, hands down. The songwriting, vocals and musicianship appeal to me more than The Who and that's saying something. I like The Who but there will never, ever be anopther Led Zep.

DO you think they'll ever reunite with Jason Bonham on drums. Boy, I wonder what kind of a pirce that ticket would fetch?

Let me name drop here and say, I was talking to The Who's manager last week and he told me he also used to manage Jimmy Page. In fact he was interrupted half way through by a phone call from the man himself! The Who's manager and Jimmy are still good friends at the very least :)

Didn't Page play guitar on "I Can't Explain"?

CreepingDeath 09-22-2005 06:11 PM

Led Zeppelin

This one isn't even close. I've never really liked The Who.

markolas 09-22-2005 06:13 PM

I picked LZ, but only because I like Tina Turner's version of Whole Lotta Love, and Stevie's rendition of Rock & Roll. I really don't like either of these bands. Although, Tina did a fine version of Acid Queen. Hmm...

shackin'up 09-22-2005 06:17 PM

led zep

although i love The Who.

Almost nothing beats Physical Graffiti, I, II and III and IV. That's just too much strength.

Serrart 09-22-2005 06:19 PM

Led Zeppelin, no contest. The had the best living rock guitar player and Robert Plant's voice is way better than Roger Daltrey's for me.

Romy

Page is on loads of other pop songs from the 60s though, I think the most famous is Joe Cocker's A Little Help From My Friends.

And, Donovan's "Sunshine Superman" & "Season Of The Witch".

The big "yes, he did/no, he didn't" song about Jimmy Page was The Kinks "You Really Got Me" (not "I Can't Explain")..Jimmy says he came up with the riff & played guitar on it, Dave Davies says "no, f***ing way". That's where the big "bad vibes" is...not between Jimmy & the Who.

I voted for the Who...they've been around longer...plus, I'm only just now coming out the other side of my "I'm so sick of Led Zeppelin I could puke" phase.

Dreammms 09-22-2005 07:47 PM

Led Zeppelin

Well, this one was easy!! The Who doesn't come close to Led Zeppelin. Not in their dreams IMO

Beachwood Mac 09-22-2005 07:55 PM

Led Zeppelin. Never could get in to The Who. Slept for 2 hours in the San Diego Sports Arena (sometime in the 70's) waiting for Zeppelin to show up very late for their concert. It was worth the wait!

markolas 09-22-2005 07:58 PM

Meh...when are we gonna do the Billie vs. Ella face off? :D

The Who. I love both bands, and I admit I have more Zep than Who, but I think The Who were more original throughout their career, relatively speaking. And, they invented the rock opera, which may actually hurt them.

That reminds me of one of the funniest comments I've ever heard. Once, Keith Richards said he couldn't imagine working with singer as flamboyant as Robert Plant. Ummm, Keith...

danax6 09-22-2005 08:13 PM

The Who. I've never really listened to LZ, though I am familiar with their work. But it was my dad that introduced me to The Who, since he's a fan. So, while growing up, I was always forced to listen to them. Not that it was a hardship. ;)

 you'll grow out of it - actually swing your guitar and break your hand Mr. Baba O'Reilly

Seriously, The Who are amongst the best of the best. I love all there stuff - Quadrophenia, Tommy, etc. - Hell, I even loved "Athena" and "Eminence Front" from Its Hard.

But, LZ is just a little better IMO - though in this class second is really first as well.

WildInTheWind 09-22-2005 09:13 PM

Tough one. Well, Led Zeppelin is one of my all time favorites...so I guess it isn't that hard. THey are, in my opinion, one of the best rock and roll bands ever.

Ditto. Never got into any of their music.

Miss Vicky 09-22-2005 09:35 PM

I'm not a fan of either one, but I dislike The Who whereas I'm mostly indifferent to Led Zep. Songs like "Squeezebox" and "Teenage Wasteland" just annoy the sh*t out of me. In fact the only Who song I've heard and actually enjoyed is "Behind Blue Eyes." There's at least a handfull of Zep songs that I like, "Kashmir" above all.

I think Fleetwood Mac's "Thunder Only Happens When It's Raining," the Grateful Dead's "I Will Get By" and John Lennon's "Well We All Shine On" are annoying, too.

Don't really care for the who.

eclipse 09-23-2005 02:15 AM

Who!

WHO else??
LZ was an excellent band but I don't believe really comparable to the Who.
Apples and Oranges IMO

A truer test would be Stones/Who
It was the same time period and if you were alive and into music (Which I totally was...you either liked one or the other)

Nothing could compare to hearing "Baba O'Reilly" live and in person, with Keith Moon on drums...unless it was "Midnight Rambler" live and in person, with Mick on harmonica.
Sometimes....it's GREAT to be older

LZ came out later and I loved them too

but for this vote I will take Pete Townsend (such an incredible talent) and the WHO

face of glass 09-23-2005 05:10 AM

Pretty easy. I grew up with the Who when I was 17-20. The band had four distinct personalities who all sounded like they were soloing all the time and yet it all came together in a magical way. Their catalogue has moments of utter chaos and power (classic endings to "My Generation", "Sparks"), vulnerability and beauty ("Tattoo", "Love Reign O'er Me", etc.) and just plain weird ("Cobwebs And Strange", "Boris The Spider"). Pete Townshend was one of the great showmen and songwriters of all the time. Oh, and I find a few of his solo albums (Rough Mix [with Ronnie Lane] Empty Glass, All The Best Cowboys Have Chinese Eyes) far more fascinating than any Zeppelin solo product.

Led Zeppelin were a great band too, but I've always preferred Daltrey to Plant as a singer anyway, I find some of Plant's vocalizing pretty annoying sometimes. Favourite Zeppelin song? "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You". And we all know Lux wants her "Tangerine".

face of glass 09-23-2005 05:14 AM

Oh, and to the doubters of The 'Oo, watch The Kids Are Alright. That movie can even convert a stone.

eclipse 09-23-2005 05:54 AM

Oh well

I wasn't questioning your band selections :sorry: if it sounded that way. I am enjoying this thread (I picked the loser last time)
I'm just thinking that Stones and Who belong together---
But hey, that's just me...
and I was trying to think who
I would compare LZ to...
Bad Co?, Van H?, Yes?, The Firm?, (sorry couln't resist)

So please, no offense intended...just me babbling
