Earthquake Swarm in Central California!!
Eight earthquakes so far today in Central California!!!
http://earthquake.usgs.gov/recenteqs...uakes_all.html The largest an M4.7!!! (Most of them microquake level) YOU GUYS ARE GOIN' DOWN!!!!!!!! |
After reading this, and Amber's post yesterday.....facing a dead-on hit from hurricane Rita right now.....this **** is just horrifying! We've been placed under a mandatory evacuation now....but we've decided to stay.....we have the means TO leave, but have too many animals, job committments, etc. But the roads out are disasterous....it takes 2 hours to get thru my little town that normally takes 6 minutes to pass thru beginning to end. The mall is seven miles from my house and my neice has been trying to get home since 1130 this morning---5 hours ago!!!!! :distress:

For godssake, stay safe and take care. Thoughts and prayers to all in any danger right now....the natural world is scaring the heck out of me, even all the way over here in lil ole England.

Whoopie s**t. Maybe a few grapes will fall off a vine and a poorly secured liquor store will lose a couple bottles of Ripple. David, you're inciting panic around the globe with your "Chicken Little" outburst, now go sit facing a corner and play "The Second Time", "When I See You Again" & "Docklands" back-to-back 100 x's in a row until you learn not to react in such a flagrant manner. Shame on you... a 4.7... ...a Ralph's Market 18-wheeler going down Rio Vista Avenue causes the house to shake more than a quake of that magnatude. And, remember, you live in the same block where the multi-million dollar homes just slide down a hill for the heck of it. And to those in Rita's path....Get to high ground!! Be safe! |
A 4.7??
Please. Quakes happen every single day and most native Californians don't give a **** if there under 5.0. There are also plenty of cool little freeware software programs that track all the little quakes every moment of the day, globally! Useless, but interesting. QuakeBar is my fav. Mac OS only. |
Several more!!!!
It's like that movie "The Swarm" with Olivia de Havilland & all those killer bees! Remember, all you need is 33,000 M4.0 quakes to equal the energy released in an M7.0 quake!!! So far, we're at about TEN & counting!!! |

David, I'm currently hunkered down under my dining room table with my laptop, canned pork and beans and bottled water. |

That gargantuan convergence plate boundary 50 miles offshore from you is gonna unzip from south to north before you can say "Bob's me uncle"!!! |

HELP! WE'RE GONNA DIE!!!! |
Actually don't all these quakes help take pressure off the San Andreas maybe saving us from a big one up here or in El Lay for at least a few more years?I'm no expert but that is what I seem to remember hearing.

I didn't feel a damn thing.

personally, I'd rather see a bunch of little quakes like that than one giant one, because its my understanding that they release pent up energy along the fault line and lessens the potential for damage in so doing. here's a link to the Oroville Dam seismogram and here's the pic: http://www.ncedc.org/ftp/outgoing/us...HZ.current.gif |

As a sidenote, there's a phenomenon now being studied known as "stress triggering." The upshot seems to be that all earthquakes -- large or small -- relieve stress at some point along a fault. But through a complex series of processes, future quakes (aftershocks or mainshocks) can theoretically be triggered along the fault -- nearby or distantly -- or even on adjacent faults. And as Brian says in his FAQ, it would take thousands of small quakes to spend the accumulated stress of a major quake (in a correlation that depends on the magnitude of quake). Look at the two humongous quakes in the Sunda Trench within the past year -- they occurred within three months of each other & within only 110 miles of each other. I recommend this book: it's cheap, currently in print, etc. It's called "Earthquake Science: What We Know & Don't Know About Earthquakes" by Susan Elizabeth Hough (a seismologist with the USGS in Pasadena). |
Pathway of Rita
O.K. guys.....this may be the last time I'm able to get online because the worst of it should be coming late tonight. They've 'predicted' the eye to pass straight over Port Arthur, Tx which is about 50 min south of my house. We're away from the storm surge, but are going to be on the dirty side of the storm. We've prepared as much as we can...it would've been impossible to get on the road yesterday. Every northbound road was packed, with all the busses with evacuees from NO on top of the two million people trying to get out of Galveston and Houston, many people are stuck on the side of the road, without gas. They're trying to get gas trucks from DOT to them to get them on their way.....but those poor people who took the 'back roads'....I wonder how they'll get help. So, Please pray for us.
