Like or Dislike: Kick It

The lyrics? Suck. Hard. There's just no denying it (even though Amber and perhaps Curtis will try.) Waited for in Egypt? Jesus, Stevie, I mean come ON! And the pauses where lyrics should go but then there's just music? Or a line is too short for the rhythm & just stops? Ugh.

One minute she's saying she doesn't want it to end, the next she's saying she's outta there. Kick it - like, leave him, right? Did Stevie invent the term " kick him to the curb" & we didn't know it? ;) She sounds angry in parts, then indifferent in others.

BUT! I don't hate this song. I've been liking it more & more lately. The music is pretty damned rockin' and it has its moments. Like:

"I'll stay with you one more night
I'll bid you no goodbyes
Not until tomorrow's light...
Then I'll say goodnight
I would really rather die...
Than make you stop"

AND

"Well I loved you more than life itself
(Nothing like forever more)"

I am not a big fan of the chorus musically (or lyrically, for that matter) but I do like the music for the rest of the song. Mike Campbell strikes again. I do sing along to it, but not that loudly. :D Live? Eh, I'm not too upset I've never heard this live.

i like this song. i admit the lyrics are pretty bad. i guess i just like that it's a rocker and she sings it pretty damn good.

A lot of people seem to dislike this song but I like it. I agree that some of the lyrics are corny but I like listening to the music. Whenever I listen to SA I always listen to Kick It and I prefer it over some of the other tunes on the album.

Some of the lyrics are great....some not so great. (For the longest time I thought it was "I'm waiting for a kneejerk" ) I really like the part where she sings:

So what is this...when you can
What is this...what about me
What is this...(What is this)
I understand...(I understand)
What is this...I'm lonely...I'm lonely...(I'm lonely)

It's more the way she sings it than the actual lyrics, but how can your heart not break when you hear her sing "I'm lonely" like that?

I think this is one of the best on Street Angel but I think I'm a bit worn out on it after listening to it for so long. It was probably the song that hooked me onto SA.

It's pretty bad.. I mean, c'mon....

"I think that is the meaning of love...
And I prefer to kick it...
"

Jeea, Stevie- enough, already.

One of my faves on 'Street Angel.'
The best thing she's ever written? Nah. But a cool little song nonetheless. :)

And I love the way she snidely calls the guy on how he's been acting...
"So what is this, 'when you can'? What is this, 'what about me'?
What is this, 'I understand'? What is this, 'I'm lonely, I'm lonely'?"

No need to defend this song. It rawks hard.

Love it. 10+

I give it about a 4. Not bad, not great for me.

markolas 09-19-2005 11:44 AM

Eh, it's an okay song.

Street Angel is such a cheesy album that it's actually a lot of fun. :D I listen to it once in a while, but not the way I listen to Bella Donna (which is her *true* masterpiece)...with SA, it's more like...OMG, I can't believe she recorded this at the same time I was listening to Dave Matthews & Counting Crows.

It is pretty bad - but I like when the guitar seems to answer her "I'm lonely" phrase Le Stew referenced above with a blaring piss off. This is one that IMO could have been world's better without the Klonopin goggles and the with a slick producer. But, it is what it is and it is not good.

:xoxo:
But I will defend it. I just don't see why the lyrics are so bad, they make perfect sense to me. So she says "Waited for in Egypt", so what??? It's better than saying for the millionth time...you know, whatever she usually says all the time. Stuff about Dreams, and Rivers, and the ocean, and blah.
It's unusual, I like it. And I think the rest are good, too. She describes what the meaning of love is to her, and then she says that she prefers to kick the habit (of love). Simple.
Ooo, and I LOOOOOOVE this part, It's absolutely gorgeous to me:

It's a strange kind of love affair
A symphony of sorts
Strange kind of love affair
A declaration of war
No I won't be here tomorrow night
You won't see me smiling
Tomorrow when it's very dark No crying

I LOVE the way she sings "Smiling". It's awesomely perfect.

The music is great, the song rocks. Good voice, good music, good lyrics, that's Kick It!!

I just like the last part, Kick this B*tch. Very funny.

What's wrong with that? She was channeling Kate Bush:

My Pussy Queen knows all my secrets
I'll never fall in love again
I drift with dunes
I whisper of the tombs
They offer me Egyptian delights
She's got me with that feline 'guise
Got me in those desert eyes
Oh I'm in love with Egypt

"Kick It" is great -- not as great as "Egypt," but still great.

Regarding the first line, Like Ted Nigent once said, WANG DANG SWEET P***TANG. :p

I really like this song A LOT. It's not a top Stevie song over all but as far as the SA album goes it's by far one of the best songs on there. It's so rockin and fun to listen to and catchy. Some of the lyrics are little cheesy but they make sense to me none the less. Great guitar work too. The chorus is much weaker than the verses but that's typical of Stevie. It's the best song on SA after the song SA.

GateandGarden 09-23-2005 09:55 AM

Amber already quoted this part but I just have to emphasize how great it is-

"It's a strange kind of love affair
A symphony of sorts
Strange kind of love affair
A declaration of war
No I won't be here tomorrow night
You won't see me smiling
Tomorrow when it's very dark No crying"

That rocks. I love all the venom in this song. I love a good "screw you" song. This is my favorite on SA.

David 09-23-2005 10:21 AM

I like

Well, I like "Kick It" although I haven't heard it in about five years.

But, when it comes to Stevie Nicks, I think that is the meaning of love.
